Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age |OT| You Had One Job!

Holy shit, I just cleared trial mode. Stage 100 migth be the hardest / most stressful thing I've had to do in a videogame. Yiazmat was almost a joke compared to that last battle. I'm still shaking, lol. Now, on to New Game Minus!
Only Trophy missing is the bestiary one. I still have half of the rare monsters to track down.

What's the best way to survive Zodiark's Darkja? My characters are in their early seventies and most of the time it ends up killing them. Not all the time but enough to make me really cautious and scared lol. I really do not want to go through these mines again.

You send a bait, weakest character to take the Darkja and die. Just one. If someone dies he doesn't use it in a long time. You can just cast berserk on your DPS and kill him fast.

When the fight begins send one member because he uses Darkja within the first 5 seconds. Then switch to your normal party and go to town on him.

The story in this game is soo gooood. I do think it lacks a little soul, the character backstories and the world are a little lacking, but the pacing and everything happening is great. I have such a new found appreciation for it in glorious HD. I just feel so happy to have beautiful versions of this and X on my console.

Now for XIII HD!

Just spent about a half hour casting Cure on myself with Reks and never came across the necessary number sequence. It's not like the game is difficult, but I have completed it back on PS2 and I was just looking forward to having a super powerful weapon in my arsenal... guess the RNG just isn't on my side.

Where is the crystal in the Special Charter Shaft? I thought I went through all the paths. The normal Henne Mines crystal is not near Zodiark at all.
Well I used 4x speed from the crystal (where you fought the story boss) to Zodiark. Took less than a minute.

Finally managed to make the best katana in the game. As a bonus, it's 1-handed, so I can use it with the Gendarme.

How rough was getting Gendarme? I tried Ultima's room quite a few times and never even got the chest to spawn, not even sure if I would use it but I did want it

I hate the combat system in this game. I seriously regret ever purchasing it. I thought the gameplay in XV was bad enough, this is even worse.

I wish the games went back to turn based combat, I cant stomach this active time or real time battle nonsense.

The battle system here is faster because of the gambits. Turn based system like FFX wouldn't make sense. You could make the action slower in config to give you more time to make a decision.

Forgot just how much I loved this world. I really hope this remaster gets a lot of attention, so SE can revisit Ivalice again.

... The MMO doesn't count. :p

Here is my setup I think.

Vaan: shikaki / monk
Penelo: white mage / time mage
Basch: knight / ulhan
Balthier: machinist / foebreaker
Ashe / bushi blackmage

So i'm playing this for the first time, and have pretty much stuck to the same 3 characters for the whole game so far. My main team are level 33ish, but the other 3 are level 12 lol.

Am i setting myself up for failure here by not levelling the others? I feel like things are getting more difficult now and my main party are struggling. I've just got to Old Archades, so am wondering if i should head off and do some sidequests maybe and level up a bit.

Not even sure where to start with sidequests except the hunts...

I love it for the first 5 or so hours, until after you encounter Ghis and set out. It sets up something epic. And then the palace raid and the shit that comes after it. The characters get some development at first but then it just stalls somewhat.

That sounds slightly underleveled for Old Archades, but not sure. I think its handy to have 6 decent characters, you can switch them at will and also revive dead guys you've taken out of the party. Sometimes my second group finishes the job because they aren't that much weaker.

I'm in
draklor laboratories
roughly what % through am I? Just curious.

75%ish

____________

Looking at a guide for certain techniks pertaining to IZJS, To get some you have a 10% chance for a chest to appear in a certain area with the technik. Does the 10% rate mean I can run back and forth between areas in the same zone or do I need to completely leave the area/restart game?

Edit: Okay I just realized I've been trying to get a chest to spawn for an ability I already have.

I really dislike how little Technicks there are in this game, and the ones that are there are weird and gimmicky. The most useful 4 that people would want are hidden in nearly end game locations, with some tied to a low % to spawn. I was hoping this version of the game added some abilities, like how Tactics has several abilities per class. Instead here I am with auto-attack on like I'm playing a mobile game on max speed.

I think FFXII's magic system is spectacularly well laid-out but yes, some sort of weapon ability system would have been really nice (nearly every genuinely interesting ability in the game is a magic spell).

Wow, is 12 like drastically shorter than other FFs? Feel like I'm breezing through in comparison.

No, it's very long if you do everything. Easily 100+ hours. the main story doesn't take all that long though, if you don't really stop to do side content. Maybe 40 hours or so. Even faster with the speed boosters.

I definitely have no gripes with the magic system, it's great. It's just baffling to me how "boring" the physical classes are. Everything is tied to stats and licenses which is cool for making classes have their own niche, but they forgot to give people the tools to make it more engaging and fun. Does the Dragoon equivalent even have Jump? Come on, man.

So if you set a gambit for someone to use a break, they just use it repeatedly? It's not like a buff, debuff where they use it once until it deactivates?

Weird I enjoying the game more than I did originally although I still hate the autopilot battles and the summons are still poor in comparison to the previous FF's, but its the story I'm enjoying and the characters.
Which is weird because my PS2 save is clocked at 78 hours and I remember only little parts of it like some locations, its like a new game but familiar.
The music is serviceable, better than IX but nothing as rememberable as 7, 8 or 10, hell even 13, its just alright.
But I definitely like the characters.

They specifically didn't call the heavy armor spear class "Dragoon" because there is no Jump.

But yeah, the Techs in this game are like 80% garbage and they really needed to have expanded it, even if it was simple stuff like spin slashes.

Just a little past getting the 2nd jobs unlocked and I'm not sure what type/class of equipment I should be going for? I'm using a fairly common group of:

Foebreaker/Shikari
Uhlan/Machinist
Knight/Bushi
White Mage/Time Battlemage
Red Battlemage/Archer
Monk/Black Mage

The first 3 all seem pretty straightforward (I'm assuming generally spears are going to be much better than guns, and heavy/STR gear will be better for Knight/Bushi at least until I hit the STR cap?) but I'm not sure on the last 3. For WM/TM I'm only not sure because I've seen some people say you should go crossbow so I'm not sure if that's correct and if so that means I should also go Heavy Armor instead of Mystic Armor. And I have more or less the same question on the last two, do I gear for the physical class (Archer/Monk) or mage class (RM/BM)?

Alright GAF, what in the world am I missing here? I played this on PS2 and I'm having a really difficult time here. I've been following guides and in this thread for roles and so far I've got Vaan at level 11 (Shikuri), Basch level 13 (Knight), and Fran level 11 (Archer). Plan to make Asch my White Mage.

I'm having really difficulties with some enemies and it just seems like I need a dedicated White Mage at this point. Am I missing something? I'm searching for the Hunt 2 monster and those areas can be a bit challenging.

EDIT - Am I just exploring too far out?

I don't know if Chuchulainn is regarded as a difficult boss fight, but I just had the one of most intense 20 minutes in my gaming life lol

Took me a few retries, too. Probably it would have been much easier if I equipped everyone the right accessories and researched on some strategies.

I went with
Vaan -Foebreaker/Shikari
Balthier- Black mage/Machinist
Basch- Knight/Bushi
Ashe - Monk/Time Battlemage
Fran - Red Battlemage/Archer
Penelo - White Mage/Uhan
Send some time in the first mine and to some hunts
I noticed people mentioned they had trouble with the first wall and advised people to run away but I killed him with one chain of quickening
Mine ain't ideal but you can't really make a game breaking mistake, just choose what you want and build them up a bit, your character should atleast match guests strength levels.
If they are a lot higher you need to grind a bit.

Using a crossbow is nice for White Mage / Time Mage because it's ranged, meaning the AI will stand back. It helps keep them out of danger from area attacks that will mostly be centered on your melee characters. Even if you're using the crossbow, Mystic Armor all the way. You want your spells as powerful as possible and the crossbow attacks are just something to do in the (very little) downtime between buffs and healing.

Archer / Red Battlemage and Monk / Black Mage are really all about buffing the mage half of the combo with bonuses from the physical class. For example, people use Archer / Red Battlemage because Archer gives you to the Burning Bow (which buffs Fire-damage by 50%) and the Swiftness 3 augment. So I'd pretty much treat both combos like normal mages.

EDIT - Am I just exploring too far out?

If you use the Libra Technick, you can see monster's levels. That might help some.

Noticed I had an opal ring from the grenades I attacked today

Coincidentally, I went into barheim

Coincidentally, the big enemy there had reflect

Sometimes things just work out

The Nihopalaoa is still my favorite FF accessory ever. Put it on someone with all three Remedy Lores and have them toss one at an enemy to inflict potentially dozens of status ailments on them instantly. Works like a charm on a surprising number of bosses and marks.

Now for XIII HD!

XIII's already in HD, though...what it and XIII-2 need is a port that runs as well as Lightning Returns PC does. And LR itself needs to not have N64-level textures in big outdoor environments.

Crystal Tools is a pretty lousy engine all around. No wonder it was never used for anything else (other than Dragon Quest X and FFXIV 1.0)...
