Personally, I had always dreamed of a House of M/Secret Wars scenario for the ending of the first film. Just have Thanos win and remake the universe in his image to setup the second movie where everything's crazy and doesn't make sense and forces the heroes to come together to defeat him.

I mean they would have to justify him going from Infinity War to his solo movie, and assuming Infinity War is likely to end on a big cliffhanger, or even a downer, that's an awkward transition. Maybe just makes more sense for him to come in for the final battle in Avengers 4, but in the meantime, he's back on Earth doing his own thing, trying to get back to his daughter.
