End of an era: Microsoft is planning to kill off Paint after 32 years

Not really. It says why in the OP. They have a new program that does both 2D and 3D and has way more features. Don't let nostalgia blind you.

I'm not sure if you're right.
Paint 2d loads in < .3 seconds on my computer. Will the same be said for paint 3d?

Why not just leave it be.

Outlook Express going? I still use it and judging by podcasts/youtube vids, others do too.

I also use 4 browsers with IE11 being one. The recent update creators chose to remove "open a recently closed tab". Now the next "creators" update is removing paint and email. There's nothing creative about this.

That's shitty. I use Paint all the time for super quick cropping, screenshots, or adding text to stuff. Basic things but it loads instantly and is so simple it makes it faster.

Me too. It'll be missed.

I owe paint my life

Oh my god.

This gets me every time. Hahahahaha.

Same...this is going to be really irritating at work. I often copy images in with the snipping tool and then save them as .Png files.

Can't you just save the image as a PNG with the Snipping Tool? My coworkers do this too and I don't understand why.

What the hell is the point of removing it when they went through the trouble of shipping it with 10 in the first place? Just leave it be and get rid of it in the next OS.

The next OS is the Fall Creators Update. There's never going to be something called Windows 11 if that's what you're thinking.

Paint 3D can do everything Paint can, but at first glance it actually seems less capable because much of it's functionality is hidden away in tabs, whereas regular Paint shows everything at once.

It basically has a mobile app UI, which is never a good idea for an PC program.

I wouldn't go that far. Most people who just need to crop an image and maybe add a bit of text can probably figure this out:

I'd say so, yes.

Outlook Express hasn't been part of a Windows OS since XP.

Oh, if it's just a program upgrade it doesn't really count as killing Paint and saying it was 32 years old, does it.

Before Paint there was Paintbrush, and I was there too as I child.

Paint only shipped since Windows 95, and was a pretty big overhaul. It's "just" 22 years old.
Yep. Also, awesome to see paintbrush again. Really gives me the feels.

Why are people afraid to let old tech go. Like there's a huge reluctance to ditch 32bit applications in favour of 64bit.

What this person says. Blast from the past right here.
A lot of things that run on 32 bit won't work on 64. Sure you can emulate, but a dedicated machine is easier. Old tech may have it's workarounds, but it's not the same. I say just leave it on there, it's not like it's causing any problems. If someone wants to switch from default to that, let them. Just remove it on the next OS

same, it loads up much faster than photoshop when all i want to do is print screen and crop something

But if they don't have the resources internally to keep legacy software in line with upcoming windows updates then what happens if it breaks.

A solution is offered already.

To all the people complaining - what does Paint do that Paint 3D doesn't?

Because it sounds less to me like they're "killing Paint off" and more like they're "replacing it with a better, more featured and still free version".

Notepad++ is superior in every single way.
Wish that was installed on every comp as a standard package.

It even saves notes without you manually saving it (you're fucked if it crashes though).

So does sublime, but with the added benefit of a package manager and not looking like a win 98 application

20 years from now we'll still be computing on an OS called Windows 10? Doubt it.

Does Paint 3D have layers in 2D mode? That would be sweet. Ha ha at people so upset over this.

Paint was specifically designed to be easy to handle. Windows 7 Paint kinda abandoned that principle already, but Paint 3D really isn't that simplistic. After all, its focus is simplistic 3D picture manipulation and not simplistic 2D picture manipulation. The latter is just implemented for simplistic texture manipulation, which is not nearly the same thing.

For people who, like me, had no prior experience with Paint 3D, here is a rough demo of its capabilities in hands of artistic antitalent like me:

(I wonder if 3D graphic pros can make more models for Paint 3D for use by noobs like me. Could be useful for ugly infographics.)

If paint 3d isn't easy to use (e.g. has smoothed edged brushes by default), I fear this could have a genuine effect on the pixel art community. Paint gave spriting an incredibly low barrier to entry.

May a flight of JPEG angels fly thee to thy rest.

Paint 3D has a specific tool for pixel art. And a much greater zoom level (up to 6400%)

Probably not, it'll probably just be called Windows. The point is, Windows is a service now. It'll be getting constant feature updates every year from now on, and for the time being will be known as Windows 10. When will they drop the Windows 10 name? Who knows. But when they do, they won't be moving onto Windows 11,12 etc...

This was one of my most used applications way back in the day. ♥️ Paintbrush

Its sort-of being killed off. I see Paint 3D as more of a large update to it than actually removing it all together. As long as Paint 3D doesn't have something stupid like ads in it (my poor Solitaire), then I think we're still fine. All I use it for is quick cropping anyway.
