Wkd BO 07•21-23•17 - Slam Dunk' for Nolan, Apes escape, not rough Girl's Trip, Luc

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Late July/August is looking kinda light this year. Maybe some of the studios should've tried to make that spot work. Just The Emoji Movie and Atomic Blonde this Friday? Then just Dark Tower after that?

There's absolutely no reason for a studio with shareholders to want to hide having bankrolled the most expensive movie ever, no sir.

Busty summed it up better than I could.

There was a reason for various trades to report the budget was way over $300 million before the release, but Fox adamantly insist on that $237 million figure. Maybe it's what they paid, not including the other investors.

That's some good information. I had no idea about any of that. Fox played themselves.

Although Busty speculates a decent bit, he brings up a decent point. Avatar's CGI is still top-tier CGI, eight years later. Look at the scene of Hulk talking at the end of the recent Thor trailer. It does not hold up at all compared to Avatar, at no point is that shit believable.

Yes, but you go by their number for their production budget. His whole post is speculation.
What he said about the funding bodies falling out of their deal with Fox and the CEO who should have been lauded for making Avatar being pusbed out is true though.
I go back to common sense...if Avatar cost that little, studios would just make every big blockbuster in photorealistic CGI. Couple that with all the rumours about the budget being way higher than Fox reported and...duh.

I anticipate The Hitman's Bodyguard to be a sleeper hit.

There were rumors that Titatnic was well over 300 million and over budgeted during it's tumultuous production. That doesn't mean anything.

Not every studio or film has James Cameron at the helm. You're simplifying things was too much.

So the weekend estimate for 47 Meters down ended up being 62% higher than the weekend actual. I'm not sure how studios manage to mess up by that margin.

I lowered my expectations because of BronsonL but, uh, wow.

Never bet on BronsonLee

The movie that out of nowhere had a stealth really good run. Wasn't the plan originally for that to be straight to Home Video? If that's true I bet the studio is dancing for joy they released it in theatres first instead

It's a convoluted, uninteresting mess outside of 10 minutes.

Ehrlich with his twelfth heel turn.
Maybe YOU'RE the one who needs to turn their heel!
Ehrlich even liked Spider-Man for the most part.

It's definitely a weird Summer.

I was gonna name you too but I couldn't remember your impressions at the time (much like how I can't remember Thor: The Dark World).

Yeah, I enjoyed Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It's exactly what I expected from an MCU movie. It was fun. And that's it.

I don't recall ever hearing that figure for Titanic, but that movie was massively overbudget. It was initially budgeted at $100 million and ended up at double that.

Does James Cameron being the director alter how much it costs to pay three years of wages to a massive team of CG artists?

And why is Cameron, who prior to Avatar directed the most expensive movie ever twice, being considered as a reason the budget would be more controlled than with another director at the helm?

Common sense.

James Cameron being the director means that shoot doesn't get shut down immediately when it goes way over budget

It's the same carte blanche that people like Nolan (if he ever went over budget) and George Miller get

If a shoot is going south, they'll kill that shit dead

Also who the fuck is this Ehrlich person, do I need to beat him up to establish dominance

One bonus for Atomic Blonde is that the trailers aren't misrepresenting what you get out of it, you get good action and such

It's just wrapped in a whole bunch of slooooooooowwwww

I'd pay actual money to see this.
I am what Will Smith is looking for, Toa TAK.

I tell the truth.
I think you mean to say "Troof".
So there's a decent chance we'll see Atomic Bomba in the thread title next week?
I will punch something if that happens.

Probably my pillow.

Nothing slow about Sofia Boutella.

This gif is just reminding me that Andy Serkis deserves more love.

If that man doesn't at least get some sort of "Lifetime Achievement" award or something it'll be a shame, since the odds of him getting an individual award seem low considering the majority of his career is just on a green screen.

Agreed. There's no doubt he'll receive an honorary Oscar award for his achievement.

Speaking of moments that startled audiences.

Amazing how people went from chuckling to dead silence in an instant.

Yeah, that was executed perfectly. People were waiting for that stupid line to get dropped, Draco spits it out right on cue, and then Caesar draws himself up to full height...

Shit was fucking chilling.

Yeah I hope so, I even really enjoy what he brings when he (somewhat rarely) does live action roles.

Like I can't wait to see what he brings as Klaw in Black Panther. He was only in Age of Ultron briefly but I thought he did great for the tiny bit he had to work with

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was one of those films that seemed to come out of nowhere and be really fucking good. It was another, "Oh, look. Another Hollywood reboot."
Then it hit, and left people in shock.

Speaking of Atomic Blonde, last chance to throw out predictions for that and GAF animated film of the year, The Emoji Movie.

I don't think I've ever been more thankful to be utterly wrong about a movie pre-release.

I'll throw down I guess:
$20 mil domestic
$30 mil WW

I predict that Toa and BGE will be wrong

I predict you are layme.

Totally. I remember when it released I had zero expectations and never went to the theater for it. Once it came out on home video I decided to give it a shot and by the time it was over I was legit shook.

For some reason though I still haven't gone to see War yet even though I loved Rise and Dawn. Idk why I just don't feel compelled to have to see it in theater's

I'm getting the sense critics are sharpening their knives for the Emoji Movie. I expect GREAT things out of the review thread.

I've always found Rise to merely be "pretty good." Love everything about Caesar, but it also features peak could-not-care-less James Franco.

I predict that Toa and BGE will be wrong
There is a first time for everything. Except this.

He directed and stars in Warner Brothers upcoming Jungle Book movie.

Eh, Rise was alright. Dawn, though, was awesome. Did not expect that. Strangely I don't feel super compelled to see War.

Oh god not this again.

I know Busty likes to claim Avatar cost $500m, but it never happened. There was an erroneous (The New Yorker?) article that claimed Avatar cost $500m, before listing off a bunch of expenses from R&D to the film's marketing budget (which is never taken into account for any films production budget). The tally of costs they were claiming in said article only amounted to around $420m and there was no explanation for where the rest came from.

Then of course the 'Avatar cost Fox $500m' headline was so fucking juicy that other trades started reposting and commenting on it.

Did Avatar really cost $237m? Almost certainly not. There were a lot of other inside reports that said the film actually cost $300m when all was said and done. Which is fucking expensive for 2009, but it was never the most expensive movie ever made. Spider-man 3 and Pirates 3 alone cost more. You start accounting for marketing budgets and you'll see lots of budgets look mindboggling.

Busty' reasoning of 'Do you really think Cameron has some secret talent for milking more out of a vfx budget than 90% of other directors' to claim otherwise is silly, because yes, Cameron's background has always been in VFX and he's done it time and time again throughout his career. You may as well start questioning Blomkamp's budgets.

Cameron has made the most expensive movie of all time 3 times, but Avatar wasn't one of them.
