Ideal type of Sonic games going forward?

Classic mainly, with a 3D game now and then. I get my 2D fill, those who like the 3D games get theirs. And I can happily ignore the 3D games.

For all we know, Sonic Mania might show us that 2D Sonic isn't as fun as we thought it would be in 2017, and Forces could kick ass. I know we're all expecting the opposite, but...

I actually replayed the 8-bit version of Sonic 1 last night. Still as fun as ever with 2D Sonic.

I'd want a Sonic Adventure like game that cuts out all the side characters.

Even if it's really short. Design it like Star Fox 64 or something and make it so you can speed through the story in less than an hour, but give different pathways and objectives to make replaying it over and over more interesting.

The 8-bit games aren't very "Sonic" though. They're much more linear games that basically really don't have much of anything that made the Genesis games popular in the first place...

I like them, especially due to Yuzo Koshiro's music, but I wouldn't say they're a very good representative of what 2D Sonic is or is supposed to be.

The Mega Drive games are better, but I don't have a MD, so I'd have to resort to the ports on PS3, or the two Sonic collections for PS2. Anyway, I see what you mean. But the 8-bit Sonic games do some interesting things that aren't found in the 16-bit games. Either way, my point was that classic 2D Sonic is as fun in 2017 as it was in 1991.

Sonic Mania but with all new levels. I couldn't care less about 3D Sonic.

The dream would be for HD 2D graphics that look like the Sonic Mania animated trailer. I'm not holding my breath for that though.

I'll always be happy with more classic style gameplay done well. I can still replay and enjoy 1-3&K to this day and so the more entries in that formula the better. Hopefully Mania lives up to the promise, I can already tell they have the physics right.

With the 3D stuff I really don't know. The Adventure style I find ok enough but I'd really want a way to be found to make momentum based gameplay a thing in 3D rather then it just being a race to a finish with boost pads everywhere.

People will soon get bored of mania type games when they realise it's more of the same game they had 4 or 5 times in the early 90s.
The nostalgia hype will certainly sell one game though.

I'd prefer Sega try new things even if it results in "failures" like Lost World, which I actually enjoyed more than the 2d sonics, as opposed to just offering 2d games with new levels based on old levels of 90s 2d sonics.

Freedom planet is a better game than 2d sonic.
Inspired by Sonic, but with more satisfying mechanics.

I am more interested in playing Forces for the cartoony, fast paced, high production value spectacle, even if the gameplay is relatively shallow like Generations etc.
Sonic 2d platformers weren't all that deserving of hype in the Mega Drive era, and certainly not in 2017.

My favourite style of Sonic game is the Sonic stages from Adventure 1 and 2.

We want classic sonic like mania

And a sonic adventure 3 based on the sonic/shadow levels of sonic adventure. Shame on you for putting all those other games with it. And shame on Sega for never perfecting what clearly worked for them in 3d.

Classic is the best and should continue, but next time do all new levels and maybe add new moves, characters or pick-ups.

Boost and other can be good, if only they could remove a lot of the filler content and don't do too many cutscenes (especially with voice). Also make new zones every time instead of rehashing old favorites. Alternating boost and other games would be a good way to keep things from getting too stale.

Adventure games are garbage. I don't play Sonic for the cutscenes, crappy gameplay shifts like mech shooting or Big the Cat or long adventure talking sections. Don't want that to return unless it's completely different from the old games.

But that's exactly what I want. The same thing as Sonic 1-3&K. Even back then it often went belly up when Sega tried to do something different with the series (Sonic Spinball, Tails Skypatrol, Sonic Labyrinth etc.), and really turned to shit once it went 3D.

There's really no reason why we can't have both. Classic Sonic speaks for itself, so as far as 3D Sonic goes, I'd like to see a serious attempt at cutting the fat and giving the Boost gameplay more elements from other 3D games, especially the Adventure games. There's very little that the Adventure games actually did that's impossible to do within the Boost style. Fully committing to larger, more open 3D levels (like better versions of Modern Seaside Hill), would also open things up for alternate ways of traveling through the level, and thus lead to opportunities for alternate characters to make appearances in forms that blend in rather than change the formula entirely.

One thing I'd love to see return in both 2D and 3D is the non-fixed level progression from Shadow the Hedgehog. Imagine if exploring the level and taking alternate paths led to completely different levels rather than a few relatively useless ring boxes and such. We already got a small taste of that in Whitehead's Sonic 2, so why not take it further?

Mania looks amazing and hopefully it'll be the first of many classic inspired Sonic games.

I loved Colors and Generations and I'm cautiously optimistic about Forces, but I'll reserve the future judgement about the future of those style of games until its release.

New adventure style for sure. Boost sonic has way too much 2d and waiting for timed platforms. SA2 action levels with generations homing attack would be fucking amazing.

Also bring back light dash from SA2 to quickly pick up lines of rings. That was a genius ability and should be a main stay in 3D sonic games.

I definitely wouldn't mind more games like Sonic Mania, please keep them coming.

I really wouldn't mind another attempt at an Adventure style game, if Sonic '06 was actually polished/finished and didn't have the godawful story it could've been good.... maybe. I definitely do like the boost games since Unleashed though, but Forces seems too samey, and the custom character is definitely the worst thing ever.

I'm pretty happy with what we have going on just now.

A dedicated team of fanatics making Classic games, and Sonic Team making 90s/early 2000s games dripping """attitude""", extra quotation marks to emphasize the amount of sarcastic air quotes.

Adventure 1 and 2 is still the best type, it has the best platforming controls and it delivers on the speed while not being a train track.

Boost Sonic might look better on trailers, but you don't really feel in control.

Why not something new entirely?

A sort of new sub-genre to platforming.

Make sonic's speed mean something. Make it a sort of open level platformer (like Mario 64 and not linear like current sonic games) but the levels are huge so sonic traversing the level at high speeds means something. (make it like that sonic CD intro with the chained mini planets but with mario galaxy physics, that way sonic can run around the planet without needing to stop since the levels won't have an edge).

Personally I don't have a problem with any of the gameplay styles, the biggest thing I want from the Sonic series is quality / polish. Although I do hope that Mania will become a series. Sonic Generations had a great formula but Forces looks like an awful take on that formula. Lost World had some good ideas and a few great levels but was seriously deficient in consistency. And then Boom could have been the most interesting Sonic game in years... if Sega hadn't direly underfunded it along with forcing the game onto Wii U. Any Sonic game that is well made and fun to play will get my money, but Sega needs to stop rushing out games. If it wouldn't be good enough for Mario, it shouldn't be good enough for Sonic. The series must be treated better than that for any game to work, regardless of genre.

I'm looking forward to Rivals. I expect the same relatively shallow gameplay as Generations but I enjoy the cartoony, fast paced, high production values of that type of modern Sonic game.
The speedrunning aspect provides an enjoyable challenge if you want one.
Also, they usually have good music.
Sonic games are a good example for me of the importance of being true to your own tastes and not relying on the opinions of reviewers etc.

Lost World on wii u was completely trashed in reviews but I certainly enjoyed it a lot more than almost all of the darlings of game reviewers from the past decade or so.
At its core there was an aim to be a lighthearted, colourful game and dare I say the dirty word...fun.

I can overlook the flaws and still enjoy it even if a reviewer has hyped up its flaws and painted it as the biggest crime against gaming ever.
It is one of those situations where I feel like reading the internet hype and forums can damage one's enjoyment of games by giving you certain preconceptions and expectations about a game before you can come to your own conclusions about whether or not you liked it.
According to the internet, everything is either a) amazing best game ever or B) utter irredeemable trash.

I have been enjoying 3d sonic games that it's cool to trash ever since I got a Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure.

I guess as we get older we get a good sense of what type of game and atmosphere we like.
Despite the gaming media's view of "gamers" as some homogenous blob who all want to shoot mans and play deep walking sims and indies, people have specific tastes and not everyone likes the type of game that are currently darlings.
I like arcadey, fast paced, colourful, cartoony 3d action games that don't take themselves seriously.
So I am pretty certain I will enjoy this game.

I also have the ability to overlook certain flaws if the overall experience is fun. I guess that helps.

I have no interest in Mania. It looks like level hacks of 1 and 2 levels with mechanics from 3. I was never really a fan of Sonic 3 in large part due to the added moves etc.
Sonic 2 was the right balance I think, but I dont want a rethread of that either.

I think I like all of them equally. They're all pretty fun. My issue is with the dumb "edgy" aesthetics they keep doing in the more modern games. I wish they'd go back to the more lighthearted cartoon-esque stories like the Genesis games, Colors, and Lost World.

Sonic Adventure plays super differently from Adventure 2, Heroes, 06, etc. I wouldn't really put them together personally. It's also much more tonally similar to its predecessors (Sonic 3&K in particular) than what came after it, with the main differentiation being the voiced cutscenes. The game's most interesting levels from a design perspective were the ones that took advantage of the verticality and depth of space that a 3D game can provide - in the best case, levels like Sky Deck, Red Mountain, and Speed Highway had Sonic zipping through these levels in a relatively linear fashion with opportunities for using momentum to access alternate paths, while also providing interesting unique routes and mechanics for Tails and Knuckles to explore, giving the player a novel experience each time while also saving on valuable development resources.

Also, although Sonic can get pretty unwieldy at top speed, his acceleration and turning radius is far smoother than every other game that came after. Never in my life will I understand why they made Sonic as twitchy as a gnat in SA2 and... whatever they were going for with Heroes.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is already close to perfect, and Mania looks to be ironing out whatever flaws it had left and presenting it in a beautiful package - the Saturn aesthetic works amazingly and the music sounds perfect. I LOVE absolutely everything about Mania and I want that to continue. Sonic Adventure however is hugely flawed and has aged quite poorly despite still getting the fundamentals for a 3D Sonic platformer down better than its successors. It's telling that the best-received 3D boost games are 2D roughly 60% of the time.

So, long story short they need to go back to Sonic Adventure and build off that in my opinion. Look at what made that game work and analyze what's changed since then, while also being very liberal with ironing out its undeniable blemishes. Boost is fun, there's no denying that, but after three (arguably four but I don't know if I'd count Colors) whole games using it, I think we've seen most of what it has to offer and I think the limitations of that kind of design are just too great to use forever without getting stale.

A very common defense regarding the use of the Werehog, Classic Sonic and now the Furry Doll Maker as alternate playstyles is that it just isn't reasonable, if even possible, to make a satisfying full budget game with only the boost gameplay. More than anything else - this is indicative of a fundamental flaw in the design.

I'm still waiting for Sonic to have that magic RE4 moment that changes everything.

But in my opinion, Sonic is broken from conception, so I don't see how that could be possible.

I really like that gif that Caelus posted on this page though.

Until Mania I was of the mindset that they should entirely ditch the classic concept (both full 2D games and keeping the 3D games filled halfway with 2D stages) and try to do another fully "modern" Sonic game, but now that Mania looks so good, I could see a path forward for both classic and modern. But still, the only thing I really want from the series is for them to take another shot at the Adventure/2006 format. (Just, like, making it good this time.)

i think there is potential in lost world, it just needs refinement, and theres a part of me that believes they could refine it

Give team Mania carte blanche to work on whatever classic-style games they want.

Run a public competition to see who can submit the best 3D prototype, with no restrictions on mechanics.

Fire Sonic Team.

The one that gives it a team of competent developers

Mario has had plenty of paradigm changes and for the most part people have loved them all.

The only reason the different "styles" of Sonic are so divisive is because at some point, Sonic Team just started making poor games

If they do continue making 3D Sonic games, I hope they're not cringey edgefests like how Forces seems to be.
