“I know there are questions about yesterday's announcement on the transgender policy by the President,” Dunford wrote in the message, a copy of which was provided to POLITICO. “There will be no modifications to the current policy until the President's direction has been received by the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary has issued implementation guidance.”

“In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect. As importantly, given the current fight and the challenges we face, we will all remain focused on accomplishing our assigned missions,” he continued.

Edit: OP updated.

It could still be implemented, but it's dead for now.

Yeah, I'm sure the thousands of transgender soldiers are fine with waiting around worried about their position with this hanging over their head. That won't hurt morale at all.

Look, that would require people to read the OP. Why would anyone do that?

In other words, an announcement via Twitter does not constitute an official order from the POTUS to the SecDef.

I'm sure he'll give them some official thing that they have to follow. I guess it's good that twitter currently doesn't count as an official order.

Isn't this saying they're still going ahead with the policy?

Why are people being happy in this thread?

Isn't this literally "We haven't got any paperwork to change anything so we aren't doing anything until we get it, but when we do, we'll do it".

And who knows if they have a fucking target on their back now among the other soldiers even moreso now. This probably created a bunch of bullshit.

"Asked about an implementation plan, the Defense Department on Wednesday directed all questions to the White House."

They want nothing to do with this.

This is hardly a victory. He still could put it forward if he follows the proper channels for it, instead of just tweeting it. As for how they actually implement it, we'll see. We'll also have to see if Trump has the patience to go through the procedures, or if his tweet was solely to get attention off of things yesterday.

They're still on pins and needles, I'm sure, but having a statement from the Joint Chiefs at least mildly reaffirming support for them is better than nothing, which is (to be blunt) what you usually expect as a service member on the receiving end of a President's poor decisions.

Sort of. Basically, until Trump lays out what the hell he actually means and the Secretary of Defense can draft up a method of implementation, nothing changes.

So, it's on Mattis.

Sounds like there will very much be modifications to their transgender policy, and that it's just a matter of formality before changes are underway. But I guess that's not as eye-catching of a headline.

I assumed this was a nice way of saying "you have to have a real, functioning plan to do anything"

And that they'll realize it will take a long time, allowing for people to take this shit to court

Seeing as how Trump still hasn't even filled half of his staff vacancies I don't think paperwork is his strong suit.

So if I understand correctly, Trump's tweet was the equivalent of thinking just yelling bankruptcy counts as declaring bankruptcy?

Cause there is nothing good coming from it. It reads as just evil. NPR had a bunch of people interviewing about how devastating it would be and even the interviewer sounded depressed like 'what the fuck'. And they are trying to be middle of the road.

How exactly is it "dead"?

I laugh every time Trump tweets something and the real world contradicts his statements 12hrs later.

The policy will still change. It's just that Twitter isn't how policy gets changed and Trump didn't do it the right way. This isn't something to celebrate.

Good. Trump wants to rule by royal decree, throw some simple words on Twitter and everyone else has to work out the actual details. Fuck that.

Yea he basically chucked the ball back onto the WH lawn and said that's not how this works.

Trump hates bad press more than anything. He might just let the ban die now that he's seen the vehement reaction from the public.

It's not dead, but forcing him to go through official channels on his own (rather than eagerly handling it for him) means he has to navigate legal challenges that he's proven poor at managing.

“In the meantime, we will continue to treat all of our personnel with respect."

I love this line, as they're saying that doing this would be disrespecting some of their personnel without outright saying it.

But didn't Trump say in the Tweet that he had cleared this with his generals?

Are... are you telling me that Donald Trump lied?

They are, but they have no guidance on how to do what the president wants. If Trump tweets how this is to be done then it will have to be done.

No, they're not "orders" in the least.

Orders are established by the formal chain-of-command protocol where the President gives a directive to the Secretary of Defense who in turn develops the policy guidance to the Service Chiefs for implementation. There is a formal process for this and Twitter isn't it.

Its not dead cause it never existed. Laws require documentation and plans. Like most of what Trump has supposedly done, nothing has actually been done cause there is no plan or documents. Most of his executive orders are nothing more then 1 page statements saying something needs to be looked at.
