I saw Mr. Six yesterday and enjoyed it very much. I really liked the portrayed clash of generations and their values. Feng Xiaogang was excellent as Mr. Six.

I was wondering how accurately this describes life in Beijing. I am not very familiar with China and Chinese cinema. Can someone recommend me movies like this one?

I recently watched Korean movie Silence and it was brutal. Very graphic and tackles a dark subject matter. I was shocked to hear this was based on a true story.

Jesus, that was a hard watch, I had to turn away at some scenes.
The end left me feeling very frustrated too, i wanted all those old pervert scum to die.

I watched Destruction Babies too, that was such a pointless film. Couldn't recommend it.

Just watched korean film Hope last night before going bed as I found it from Netflix
MV5BMWI3ZDc0ZDUtMGU2NS00NDliLWI1ZTYtY2EwNDQwMGExNWVlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMzU4Nzk4MDI@._V1_.jpg

I can't remember last time I cried as much during watching a film. The film was so brutal and beautiful at the same time. Greatly recommended despite the very dark premise.

^ I'll try to check that one out during the summer I think.

Mifune the last Samurai is on US netlix and i'm pissed off. Can't get it ANYWHERE in the UK and I really want to watch it.

Goddamnit. I've been dying to watch this.
This feels like the "good old days" where the only way to get certain films was to import them from HKflix and the likes because we never got any of them here. :(

Yesterday I've watched "Our Little Sister" and I absolutely loved it. Does anyone here can recommend me some similar movies?

The first part of the 'Vengeance' trilogy from Chan-wook Park. Really amazing film, same intensity of Old Boy but the tone is much less surreal and more subtle for sure.

That elevator scene tho

If you haven't seen this, it's time you rectify that.

Came out in 2000, and is a mashup of Night of the Living Dead, Ninja Scroll, gunfights, martial arts, Evil Dead's camera movements and whathaveyou.

Check out the extended version called The Ultimate Versus that adds more action, violence and such. Crazy shit.

What's the RottenTomatoes/Metacritic for Asian films? We wanted to see a film today and there was a decent selection (almost half at the cinema were of Asian origin woo!):

Alien: Covenant
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Everything, Everything
Beauty and the Beast
The Circle
The Boss Baby
Half Girlfriend (Hindi w/e.s.t.)
Hindi Medium (Hindi w/e.s.t.)
Sarkar 3 (Hindi w/e.s.t.)

Get Out
Meri Pyaari Bindu (Hindi w/e.s.t.)
Chuck
This Is Not What I Expected (Mandarin w/Chinese & English s.t.) — iirc seen trailer in theater
Battle Of Memories (Mandarin w/Chinese & English s.t.)

Generation Iron 2
The Belko Experiment
The Wall
What a Wonderful Family (Mandarin w/Chinese & English s.t.)
Your Name (Japanese w/e.s.t.)
— seen trailer & GAF hype
This presents an unfamiliar (but good) problem: too much choice! I was only familiar with 2 of the Asian films... any new films worth seeing?

Ha, is this the Cineplex at Yonge & Dundas? There are only two screenings left of Your Name. iirc (I'm assuming they won't bring it back next week, they've already dropped the dub and reduced the sub version to once a day). It's a gorgeously animated film and you should absolutely catch in theatres if you have the opportunity.

This Is Not What I Expected was really surprisingly great. If you have a stomach for a food-porn styled You've Got Mail-esque slapstick romcom then go for it. Battle of Memories was also playing here recently but I never got a chance to go see it before it left. A coworker said it was really good and visually inventive.

The Raid and Raid 2
The first one is straight up hand to hand combat movie, the second is the same with perhaps a overly complicated Indonesian take of Gangland drama, with inclusion of Japanese actors as incidental yakuza presence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MuXrN8L9ro

JJ Abrahams like the second movie enough he had the main actors turn up as Kiju Club in his Starwars movie.

haha yes. Does it technically count as the Chinatown theater? There's always at least two or three asian films in the listings. Rarely Korean films w/e.s.t though, I wonder why? I have to go up north for those.

Honestly I've been GAF spoiled multiple times on the plot (also I was craving some live action) so was just going to see it at home eventually. It's really worth the theater experience huh? I'll try and catch it

I liked the trailer for This Is Not What I Expected but didn't realize there's lots of romance in there? I'll watch it first thanks

Now the only film I've seen from Seijun Suzuki was Branded to Kill and that one alone made me fall in love with his work.
So when I noticed a limited release pop up a couple of months ago for 3 of his other films, I jumped on the opportunity and preordered as fast as I could.

only just ripped Zigeunerweisen (40GB!) and Yumeji to put on my media player and only had a tiny preview of both of them and already I can see I'll love these as well.
There's just something to them I can't put my finger on.
Not just the cinematography, but the way the actors behave. So much personality...
Really glad this one came west.

Got Pistol Opera on DVD as well, so I really should give that a watch one of these weeks as well.

How did you like the Taisho Trilogy?

Only Yesterday, a Ghibli animated film. It's beautiful. Pretty much a romance and someone discovering what they want from life, told with a wonderful flashback mechanic that all comes to a head at the end. WATCH IT.

Alright, I feel the need to roughly rank the films I've seen over last few weeks/months. My wallet is crying but a new world opened up for me. Am I missing any essential new wave korean films?

<3

GOAT 10/10
The Wailing
The Chaser
Oldboy
Mother
The Host
Memories of Murder

Holy Shit that was awesome 9/10
I Saw The Devil (this one may slip into GOAT territory with more viewings)
The Good, The Bad and The Weird (hilarious and exciting fun!)
The Man From Nowhere (pure action but very emotional!)
A Bittersweet Life (So stylish and perfectly filmed!)
A Dirty Carnival (So epic!)
Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (Bad Luck – The Movie)
A Tale Of Two Sisters (I love the concept)

Really good 8/10
Lady Vengeance (Need to watch it again, it has been a while)
Joint Security Area (Touching tale about friendship. Good stuff)
Hwayi: A Monster Boy (Cool revenge flick, engaging plot)
A Hard Day (So funny! This one is underrated because people maybe don't know that it's a comedy?)
New World (Well framed and while it's not as epic and emotional as Dirty Carnival it still captured my attention from beginning to end)

Korean actors know their craft. The most obvious lead actors are also my favourites and are a big reason why I love the movies so much.

Song Kang-ho

The Handmaiden as Kim Min-hee primer.

Hong Sang-soo films for something completely different from the thrillers.

Oh, I forgot to list that, oops. Belongs in the 9/10 category for me for sure! Once I'm done with the thrillers/gangster movies I'l probably try some of the more mellow stuff. I remember watching a funny movie on TV a few years ago with a guy who kidnaps an old dude because he somehow thinks he's linked to an alien invasion or something. Any idea? :O Can't find it but maybe it wasn't even korean.

Memories of Murder

Memories of Murder and Oldboy are GOAT shit for sure. Haven't watched asian films in quite a while, think I'm gonna check out the rest of your GOAT picks.

And maybe finally watch that long ass Sion Sono movie, Love Exposure or something. Cold Fish was amazing.

Love Exposure is so good. I never expected a movie to blend so many genre and make it work.

Fuuuuck, thank you! That's actually it, haha!!! Funny because I'm sure the name was brought up in a number of lists but I thought it would be some quirky greenpeace type of film, haha.

I hear they make awesome romantic dramas over there. Somehow this would be too heavy for me for personal reasons right now. :D Blood & violence: no problem.

But yeah, you can't go wrong with anything on that list. If you liked Memories of Murder I highly recommend Mother (by the same director).

I've heard only good things! Just gotta try and make time for it some weekend. 4 hours is just... what.

And I guess I need to find it, too. It's not on Finnish Netflix, at least.

I found one for 7 euros! Then it became 21e after shipping lmao.

Not even 100% sure if my PS4 can play it, though. Seller was in UK so I imagine it should work. Will see in like 4 or 5 weeks lol.

In the mean time I'll see what asian movies Netflix has. There's Oldboy at least. Both versions, in fact lol.

Some were obviously mentioned already but here are some of my favorites:

Romance/Drama
The Scent of Green Papaya: One of most stunningly beautiful films I ever saw. It's almost like a visual poem.

Dreams: a collection of short movies from Akira Kurosawa

Ugetsu: a haunting fairytale of the love between a man and a ghost

Just rented The Wailing. Is this something you can watch with your parents?
If your parents have no problems with subtitles, a really misleading and complex plot, blood, weird humor and children screaming nonstop...Yeah! <3

I don't know but I wish they would finally release this damn movie in Germany.

Yeah, I think there's a release planned for august 2018 or something, haha!

Btw..The international Blu Ray is region free! Even though they often only list is as region A it works with region B players as well!

Yeah if you're in Europe it'll work.

It's not really graphic, just really tense. I think it should be ok.

Memories of Murder

Memories of Murder is in my Top 5 of All-Time but holy shit...The Waling felt like a blatant (bad) copy for the entire time.
So much so that I couldn't even finish it.

You should also watch Castaway on the Moon, Train to Busan and The Handmaiden if you didn't already. Great movies.

You should really finish The Wailing. I'm not saying you'll end up loving it but that ending is fucking crazy and it will at least differentiate Memories of Murder for you.
