Sonic Mania |OT| Dreams Come True

Can someone explain the special stage coins to me? Does it only present you with a pool of unfinished stages, where finished = gold coin? Does silver remove it from the pool until you've cleared them all? When you clear them all with Gold does it just go back to randomization, and what do the rewards become?

It's definitely a cool system that encourages replays but it's really not explained well at all (same with secret unlocks, took me forever to figure out they only work in "no save" mode)

Pretty much

I got a 4k TV so PS pro version would be great on it...But I'm also about to take a 6 hour ride on the train in a week so switch version would be great....Why can't this stuff be cross buy?

I was having such fun until the
Studiopolis Act 1 boss.
What a pain in the dick. There's too much shit happening on the screen.

You only really need to pay attention to the missiles coming towards you, I find it easier to roll into the blue ones than to jump on them

The trickiest one to Perfect was the one with an extremely low number of spheres. I ended up jumping through a whole bunch of bumpers to complete it in a weird order.

I THINK the intended solution to that one is to get the first sphere and set of rings while moving backwards. Then you move forward and collecting the other three sets for a Perfect can be done without issue,

For those who finished the game with all 7 chaos emeralds:
Is it possible to only replay the Super Sonic part (like Doomsday in S3&K) after finishing the game, or do you have to play the entire Titanic Monarch Zone again?

There is a way. It involves using a cheat code.

Go into the main menu, then back out with B, and before it fades out, hold Y. Keep holding Y on the title screen, wait for Sonic's animation to finish, then while still holding Y press

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right Left Right B A
UUDDLRLRLRBA

It's the Konami Code, but with an extra set of Left Right.

This takes you to the level select screen. Pick your character (I just accidentally booted it up with Knuckles), then pick the zone after Titanic Monarch, a single act called Egg Reverie.

I mostly agree with this except for
Hydrocity, didn't feel there was much new or different in it
.

How would you guys rank the classic trilogy after completing Mania (if you have already)?

I haven't beaten it yet but where I'm at now I'm thinking something like:

3K > Mania > CD > 1 > 2

Ice Cap (3 version, Adventure is fine), Carnival Night, and Launch Base can never come back because those are the tracks MJ's team composed.

Generations 3D only had the boss part of Launch Base which was fine because Sega did that theme. Notice that every time they bring back stages or music from 3, those are the ones they never use.

Anyone know which stage offers the quickest way to get to a bonus stage ring after you've finished the game?

Chemical Plant act 1. Take the standard path and then go left while in the tube. It takes about 20 seconds to get from the start of the stage to the bonus stage.

The PC version of S3K had different tracks for these zones though, could they not be used instead?

Ice Cap zone wasn't written by MJ

You could literally use Ice Cap Zone Act 1 as a karokee version of that song lol.

The real song even sounds like it could properly loop if you wanted!

Nobody has nostalgia for those songs. Launch Base would be really weird for me without the GOGOGOGOGOGGOOGOGOGOGOGOGOGOGO

Those three stages are just lost to time.

There's also the S3 miniboss music and the credits music that may be problems, but nobody really cares all that much about those.

Here's a neat remix from the composer of Sonic Mania though, so at least a little piece of Ice Cap kind of exists.

Mania could've ended up being my favorite if it was all new zones, so I do hope the team behind it will get to work on their own Sonic game next.

So uh, anyone else experience motion sickness from this game? Had no issues until
Stardust Speedway
, but after playing it felt sick to my stomach. I've had this with a couple of FP games (The Witness, Soma) but first time experiencing it with something 2D.

Apparently if you enable
& Knuckles
mode, then use the code I posted above to play Knuckles in the final stage, you unlock
a goofy extra ending. Just a still, but funny.

Stardust Speedway
Act 2 wasn't totally comfortable for me. I ended up rushing through that level, and it was a little hard to keep track of the action there.

I unlocked Super Peel Out, but how do I use it? Same goes for the
knuckles and knuckles mode
. Don't see the option to turn them on...

Just so we're clear, this is the Ice Cap Zone music on the PC

And this is Ice Cap Zone everywhere else

I can't possibly imagine how disappointed the fan base would be if the first zone was used.

I do wonder if they could remix the songs so much that they're recognizable without infringing rights, though. Just having the beat from Ice Cap might be enough to invoke the same sort of feeling and it's just a genericish pop beat that they could get away with using.

I wonder if it's one of the Michael Jackson made tracks that mini boss song sure is in original Sonic 3. Dunno about the others.

Beaten to it, but Ice Cap's music is one of the most famous and beloved in the whole series. There would be riots in the streets if it showed up without it. The PC collection is so obscure compared to the originals and even at the time people were scratching their heads wondering why they changed the music.

The downside of Sonic zones being so associated with their music is that when legal nightmares like this happen, it throws a wrench into a whole bunch of things. Since then Sega have been much more careful about dealing with guest musicians and ensuring they own all tracks whenever possible.

Yeah, MJ himself didn't compose Ice Cap, but Brad Buxer (one of his producers) cribbed it from one of his band's unreleased songs.

The other songs believed to be composed by MJ and/or his producers (aside from the zones listed above) were the 3 credits theme, Knuckles' theme, and act 1 mini-boss. All of the latter three were replaced in Sonic and Knuckles.

I look forward to them delivering some new content, however I would be enjoying this game significantly less without throwback zones.

Knuckle's theme, the mini boss theme and the credits music have all always been suspect. Note that all three were changed in Sonic and Knuckles. They also changed in the PC version I believe?

Ice Cap is one we know was 100% not done by Sega since we have the original song.

Launch Base and Carnival Night were also changed on the PC, and both sound very MJ-like, so they've always been thrown in as suspect as well.

I'd love to hear the original songs for all of these, like Ice Cap Zone.

Sonic 1's and 2's music aren't exactly clean either, but I guess at this point Sega has worked the rights out for some songs from that game. Or they haven't and that's why Chemical Plant Zone appears in everything instead of some other stages.

I know the MJ songs are likely why there was no mobile port for Sonic 3/K but if the PC thing is legit than I guess they could be in for the DLC or Mania 2.

I cold say that. It would be a lie though.
Cold as ice
That stage is stuck in an endless music rights limbo
Hard times

No because MJ, though there is a pretty sweet snow-themed level in its place.
Well it's not actually MJ's but yeah
Shame it probably my favourite level and music in the series
Well Sonic 3+Knuckles is just God like even compared to Mania

It's a bit confusing with Sonic 3 it's never been released digitally on it own but the Mega Drive Collection was made available and is still available even digitally.
