Television Displays and Technology Thread: This is a fantasy based on OLED

So here's the thing....

I am listening to some of my physical music albums using my Xbox One, I don't have a cd player otherwise. So my TV needs to stay on as well. Using the Xbox One cd player app I can't go back to the dashboard because that doesn't work. But when I open the guide it eventually does dim the screen. My question is, is this enough to prevent IR on my 65B6? It only dims it a little.

Or is there perhaps a app on Xbox that has a screensaver built in?

My 2015 Samsung LED had a "screen off" feature where it would still be running but turn all black. Do the LG OLEDs have similar?

Not that i know of. But someone gave good advice. Very simple but actually quite effective too. He told me to just use a profile i never really use, so ISF Dark for example and just crank down brightness, oled light until it's so dark you can just see what song you are playing and no risk of burn-in. :D

My 2015 OLED has the screen-off function that BumRush mentions under Settings -> Picture -> Energy saving. I'd assume that the 2016 OLEDs have a similar feature.

Oh shit. I had no idea. I've always seen that screen off thing on my EC9300 when i still had it, but i always assumed it would simply turn my TV off. But nope, it just doesn't show anything, which is exactly what i want.

Superb.

Picked up No Man's Sky over the weekend on PC. After a few mods and some NVCP tweaking, I have to say, really enjoying it on the C7. Really contrast-y environments and looks pretty decent in 1440p for the sort of lower res art style they're going for. Disregarding the TV stuff, the game is brilliant as well.

Hm from the looks of it, I'd say that's more of a lean than the XE90. Not that it matters much either way :)

Hmm, alright.

Another question: Is it normal that the front glass of the TV isn't 100% flat/straight? If I view the screen from an angle (like in that photo) with a reflection of a window or something visible, and I move along it, I can see some warping of the reflection. This is only noticeable from the side, not when viewing the TV normally.

Yup! Pretty cool feature, right? Glad we could help.

Hearing a lot of good things post-patches. How taxing is it on PC?

Man I really wished we got those $2,000 Sony OLED TVs that were rumored at the end of last year. I know it was unrealistic to expect but the source of the information seemed to be very aware of Sony's plan to release OLED sets. Maybe it was the ideal plan for Sony until LG marked up costs for the panels to make sure their own sets would be the cheapest on the market?

It isn't the world's most optimized game, to be sure, but I'm doing probably 50-60 fps, all maxed, at 1440p with TAA on a 6700K/1080FE.

Haven't run it with fraps or anything, so the 50-60 is an estimate, but I doubt it's dipping below that.

That being said, V Synce is busted in game, so you need to disable in game and enable via NVCP. A couple mods help clean up some of the visuals as well.

I would buy the shit out of a plain Sony OLED if it was anywhere near LG OLED pricing

No HDR on PC though, right?

You get that a lot on many TV's, but the actual picture will never look like that.

I have some distorted reflections on mine.

Correct.

Honestly, I've temporarily thrown in the towel on HDR for PC.

MS and NV have a lot of work to to get stuff straightened out, on multiple fronts.

I'm guessing it won't be too long before they get it right. They can't really afford to lag any longer with all those HDR monitors dropping soon. You can bet their hardware partners are lobbying for them to hurry the f up.

I really hope you're right. As it stands, windows updates = HDR breaks, NV driver updates = HDR breaks, and at least with ME:A, game updates = HDR breaks. NV and MS need to get together and get on the same page

Officially on the OLED bandwagon (I got the C7P). I'm going to hook my PS4 Pro up tonight for some 4K/HDR gaming. So pumped. :D

Gratties and welcome. Check out a couple pages back for some discussion on making sure you have your pro set properly to cooperate with your C7; in particular rez to 2160RGB and black level to full (and set to "high" on your C7)

maybe another C7 owner can chime in and validate that that's the correct setup?

Awesome, thanks for the tip. If I had any concerns it's how my Switch will look because it clearly ain't doing any variety of 4K. Any Switch owners playing on a 4K set?

Not at all. It's just jarring, I watch a lot of hockey, so the ice isn't super bright white like on my old Samsung LCD, but I got over it in a couple of days or so, don't even notice it at all anymore.

And yep, based on what you're saying, E6 is the sweet spot.
Ah ok. Sounds good then. And yeah, that's what i figure.

Just pray for a fix when running HDR in PC mode. Right now input is identical on any non hdr setting when playing games in pc mode. I go to PC mode and have ISF bright on when I play games on my C7.

What is the point of pc mode ? Can't you just set the pc to game mode ? Or set the device to not pc, and then game mode ?

Edit: Also a big thanks to everyone who gave me advice.

As I posted that, I was thinking, it might be X6 series that had to be set to "high" on the TV. i think "auto" works alright on the C7, but I'm sure someone will be along to correct me if I'm misstating.

Hi all,

My 8 year old Panasonic plasma looks like it might be dying soon. It has a dead pixel all of a sudden and a thin line coming out of it (any thoughts on what that is)?

I've been dreading this day as I love the picture quality on it. That being said, if I have to upgrade then so be it.

I was taking a look at the TCL P607, which looks decent enough for the price.

However then I saw the KS8000 that everyone loves, and I can get the 55" for under $1000. Is that still highly recommended or is the Samsung Q7 better at this point? I see it doesn't have Dolby Vision, which might be my biggest issue, even though I don't have any 4k content.

My last thought was the Sony 900E, but that would be quite a bit more expensive unless I went down a size to 50". Actually, just found it for $1000 also..

Any advice welcome, thanks!

What I like about going to PC mode is you chose any picture setting on non hdr content and receive the same lowest input lag no matter what picture mode I select. So I can go to PC mode, keep my ISF Bright picture setting, and play games at the same low input lag as going into Game picture setting outside of PC mode. You don't have to do it, you can just go into game picture setting outside of pc mode but I really like the ISF picture settings on the 2017 LG OLEDs.

After seeing the LG B7a is only 200 more than the sony 930e,I decided Im going Oled. Tonight. Work is going by so slow.

Yeah the 930e was a close second choice for me but when I could get my oled for close to the same price I went that route.

Got my b7a set up. Tested 120hz PC mode, works flawless. Watching Stranger Things now, looks fantastic. Great TV.

PQ is much richer than the KS8000 ( though the Samsung actually comes closer than I thought it would honestly)

I just got the B6 55 model and have an issue with NVIDIA GPU Scaling (GPU is KFA 1060 3gb model). The tv seems to support 1440p resolution only in 24hz and 30hz directly.

With GPU scaling turned on in NVIDIA control panel I should be able use 1440p60 rez and the GPU would output to TV at native 4k60, but it still gives no signal like with the GPU scaling turned off. The custom resolution adding seems to only work for below 30hz resolutions. GPU scaling is turned on in Nvidia control panel of course.

I'm using windows 10 with the latest patches. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this?

Hello TV-Gaf,

Trying to decide between 2 TVs at the moment and both are looking pretty similar. The choice currently is between the Sony KD55X720E (Link) and the LG 55UJ6300 (Link).

Pricing currently favors the LG and I am leaning towards that one. The TV will mostly be used for movies/shows as well as sports and videos via chromecast or the built in OS.

If there is something else in this range, also available from BestBuy, I'd love some feedback.

Thanks!

Buy the TCL P605 (Link) since you prefer to buy from Best Buy. It is better than both those TVs and provides move value as well.

Have you enabled deep colour for the HDMI port you are connecting to?

How are the viewing angles for this TV though?

Most of the viewing is going to be at almost 45 degree angles on both sides of the TV. There will be rarely a time when the TV will be viewed from directly head-on due to the couch and chair setup.

Well if viewing angles are your most important aspect for buying a TV than overall picture quality then I guess you can get any of those TVs you mentioned. Aside from viewing angles, upscaling, and motion on the Sony, the TCL is superior in every way. The input lag on the LG is tremendously great though (11ms), even beating out the TCL by a few ms. I'm not sure if you will be gaming on it though, since you never mentioned anything about gaming in your TV usage. I would assume so since you're on a gaming forum.

Yeah not much gaming if any at all on the TV. I forgot to mention its going to be mainly used by friends that don't even own a gaming system at all.

They seem to be real set on better viewing angles and after looking at the RTINGS review for the LG, it seems that might be the one they end up getting.

I appreciate the help, TheBoss1! After looking further into the TCL, I might end up getting that for myself since I need an upgrade from a crappy 32inch Vizio E series from 5 years ago.

Ah. That's nice... Except for when you need hdr I guess.

On another note. Any have good ideas for wall mount that doesn't stick out from the bottom of the TV on the e6 55"? Needs to be able to both swivel and tilt

This may be a silly question, but is there any way for us consumers to test input lag at home?

Apart from that Leo Bodnar device you can use a PC connected to a CRT monitor and your TV at the same time with the displays mirrored.

use a high shutter speed camera and run an input lag timer like the one found here: http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.php?id=1229335064&subaction=showfull

With a high enough shutter speed, you can capture what each screen shows at the same time. CRTs have an input lag measured in nanoseconds and so they are effectively 0.

Then you take a number of photos, and check what the discrepancy between the displays is in milliseconds on the clock.

Thank you. You're giving me a reason to dig out the ol' CRT monitor. I love it.

So, I've got an interesting situation with my TV sound and receiver that I'm hoping maybe someone has a creative solution for.

I have a receiver (Sony STR-DH520) that is a few years old, so it doesn't support HDCP2.2. However, it still sounds perfectly fine for my needs. So, I'm using that and have to take the HDMI from my PS4 Pro and UHD Blu-ray player directly to the TV. For the PS4, I'm using optical to get the sound to the receiver (knowing this will limit me to regular DD or DTS). For my UHD Blu-ray player, it actually has a second, audio-only HDMI out for exactly this scenario, which is perfect for routing the sound to my receiver.

This, so far, works great. However, the issue comes with the sound from my TV apps. The TV is hooked up to the receiver via optical. While I get DD through Netflix, many other apps (particularly DSVideo or Kodi for playing my standard BD rips) will not output surround over optical. I tested ARC and I can get proper surround that way. The problem is that ARC is only supported on one HDMI port on the TV and it's one of the 4K ports. Those are both being used by the direct connections from my PS4 Pro and UHD Blu-ray player.

I thought I could use a 4K capable HDMI switch, but none that I found seem to support HDCP 2.2, which makes them useless for me. I know a new receiver would solve my problem, but since my current receiver sounds great to me as-is, it seems that I'd essentially be buying a very expensive HDMI switcher.

Any thoughts on whether I have any other options or if there are HDMI switches out there that support HDCP 2.2?

There are HDCP 2.2 HDMI switches such as this one: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=15262

Another option is is the HDFury AVR Key, which can extract the audio from a 4K source and output it to a lower bandwidth HDMI device like your receiver. A little pricey and not out until Oct, but it would work.

That HDMI switch may be perfect! Should've thought to check Monoprice.

Edit: Looking into it further, it's only a 10.2Gbps switch. It can't do 4K@60 HDR.

No problem.

Playing some Rocket League on my new X930E, on an original PS4, I can't say I notice the high-ish input lag at 1080p at all. Feels snappy to me. Guess it's perhaps more noticeable in 60fps shooters, frame-perfect fighting games, etc, but I don't really play those, so this won't be a problem at all I think. Motion also looks very sharp and clear to me. Also nice that the TV automatically switches to game mode on the PS4 input, thanks to CEC I'm guessing.

What I do notice, of course, is the low resolution, or rather the aliasing and shimmering caused by it. That's always been noticeable in RL, but it's more so now. Gonna be nice to get a Pro and get some higher resolutions going. And that will also improve the input lag.

And in general, stuff looks great on this TV. Such an upgrade over my old set. The only issue, as expected, is the blooming caused by bright objects on dark backgrounds. The blacks are pretty great otherwise, but with stuff like a white credits scroll on a black background it's bloom city.

Another thing that positively surprised me is the TV's audio. Was expecting junk based on the reviews, but it sounds really good to me. Nothing like a proper sound system, of course, but waaaaay better than my old set. Details are clear, bass is definitely there, and the simulated surround stuff actually adds quite a bit of immersion.

How is the screen reflection at home at night with a light on? I've got an old Sony LCD like yourself (W3000) with a matte screen.

I've read a few people mention the XE93 is a bit too reflective.
