Apple AirPods | OT | Try not to lose them

I think I'm gonna pick a pair of these up today. I'm over the way they look, I think they look fine. I'm still going to use my Beats X for when I'm listening to music for longer periods of time, but for podcasts, audiobooks, and skype calls, these will be a wonder.

Does anyone else's AirPods work really shittily?

It never senses that it's in my ear.

This is the first batch of them (dec 2016)

I wouldn't reccomend this product to anyone.

These were really easy to get off of Bestbuy.com...my first pair I think I just can't find because I have the charger case and it's supposed to protect them from popping out on impact.

AirPods don't seem to fit fowlers ears which is why they look like that. They shouldn't be sticking out.

They fit his ears; that's just how normal people look with airpods.

samuel gibbs ears are uneven and odd though
The bragi meanwhile looks like an enlarged canal hearing aid, but black. it def sticks out more on either side of your head while AirPods are longer in length and stick out more down your face.
Is that supposed to be a bad thing? at worst you look old. Or you look like a star with ear plugs
on the other hand, it's hard to escape the earpods' association with douchebro bluetooth headsets
but black
Only Apple would have the chutzpah to make theirs just in white

None of those shots have them sticking out like they are on Geoffrey's.

No one will ever look like Dre with Bragis and it's hilarious you think that. No I'd rather not look like I'm wearing oversized hearing aids.

I'd rather not look like I'm wearing earplugs either but it's still more culturally acceptable/cool than looking like you're a douchebro wearing a Bluetooth headset

Airpods might be the most culturally accepted douchebro Bluetooth headset but as you yourself already wrote the bragis and others look like hearing aids or whatever.

But hey if you can't even admit that airpods are sticking out of people's ears if a particular way then ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Lol douchebro. Fuck if I care what you think I look like with AirPods?

I just picked up a pair of airpods. Wore them home from work, and over a 25 minute walk they skipped quite a few times, like they were having trouble keeping connection with each other. I would say this happened about 5 or 6 times. Not constant, but my BeatsX almost never had a problem holding connection.

Is this normal? Or might I have a bunk pair?

Mine work fantastically except for two specific intersections on my walk to work where I get a really brief cut out basically every time. I guess just ambient interference?

Normal for me. Pretty disappointing tbh.

Yeah there's one street I just can't walk down because of interference, it cuts out hard, but generally there should be no skipping.

So I exchanged my airpods for a new pair and they're doing the same thing, still skipping and stuttering quite frequently. Sometimes it's fine, but I go through random pockets of it being pretty annoying. At its worst, there can be like 15 seconds of hardcore skipping. I'm on a brand new SE, so in don't think it's a problem on my end. There's a pretty healthy thread on apple forums, and lots of people with different phones having the issue.

Pretty disappointing to be honest. Considering the cost and apple's general bar of quality, I was expecting these to be more dialed in. I own a pair of BeatsX and those are 99.9% flawless.

The difference here is that the AirPods are truly wireless, while the BeatsX are connected to each other with a wire and only the connection to the phone is wireless. The problem with the AirPods is that it's basically two separate devices that have to talk to each other through a bag of water which is what causes most of the problems I imagine.

Ordered a pair of AirPods from a local retailer, should get them in a couple of days. Paid under $20 after using gift cards.

I'll probably really only use it on my iPhone 6 (looking to upgrade soon) and iPod Touch.

So...hey everyone.

Thanks!

To be honest, I don't think I would've bought them at full price. That's $220 CAD + tax, which amounts to about $250 for me in total. Gift card covered most of it thankfully.

I was very curious about them and watched a ton of reviews. For $20? I'll take them. If the store I bought it from sold the Apple Watch, I'd have used the gift cards to cover half the cost for one instead.

But I'm actually kind of excited to try them. I don't do a lot of commuting, but I do find myself constantly leaving my EarPods at home. The charging case seems like less work in carrying than having to wrap up the EarPods to put in my pocket, then untangle to put back on. Super minor thing, I know lol.

Plus, I'm going on a trip soon and it would be nice to have these on me to try.

I think I have to get rid of these.

While stationary they're fine, but the audio interference while walking is just fucking nuts. I have tried it with two sets of Airpods, and even let my partner use them with his phone for a day, just to see if it was a problem with my SE, and he said it skipped for him too.

I would love to know what's different for the people who aren't experiencing any of that, because otherwise I think these things are great. But not having a reliable connection even just as I'm walking down the street at a slow pace is unacceptable to me at this price. Super disappointing.

If anyone has any ideas of things I might be doing wrong, hit me up (and yes, they're the current firmware).

I've been using mine for 6 months.. bike rides, running, etc.. never any problems. could it possibly be a problem with your phone? have you used other BT earbuds with it?

now connected to my hackintosh is another story... but I am also in the process of getting a longer antenna for my hackintosh as it is a VERY RF unfriendly area, and my antenna because of the cord length has to be on the floor almost.. but connected to my apple tv is fine. then again also, it's a hackintosh.. so who knows..?

I feel like I’ve replied to your post regarding this before but seems I didn’t? Anyway, I had the same issue while walking and turning my 5S upside down in my pocket fixed it. Maybe some problem with the antenna location on the 5S shell phones? There’s still possible interference from your surroundings but I’ve come across one or two spots during my 7 months with these things.

Yeah I have BeatsX as well, they're 99.9% perfect, almost zero connection issues.

Hmm, I'll try that haha. Worth a shot. If that actually managed to make a difference, I'll be blown away (in a good way).

fwiw, on my pre-6 form factor iphones, I did have weird weird orientation problems.. like if I put on a song in the car and put the phone between my legs on the seat (small car, nowhere to really put it), I would get the skipping like you're saying on my stereo. or if I had it face down on the seat, move it face up.

not sure what phone you have.. but the pre-6 bodies definitely had their RF quirks. I thought I remember having fewer issues on the 6-style body.. though I can't recall having any issues with my seven for the past 11 months.

I have an SE. It's worth a shot, though I'm doubtful mainly because my other Bluetooth headphones are flawless.

Question about AirPods. I'm considering getting them, but wondering if they have a feature I really hope they have:

I am constantly switching between using my iPhone, my MacBook Pro, and my iPad Pro. Can I have the AirPods synced to all 3 at once? Is there a way to quickly switch the sound from devices? Can it auto switch? Is there a quick way to switch to another?

Thanks!

AirPods are available on all your iCloud devices once opened (and setup). They don't automatically switch but you can just select them in the control center on iOS or the volume selector on mcOS. It's pretty painless.

So, here's my experience: I've never had a genuine problem with drop outs while walking, even when walking 30 feet away from the device I was playing from, until I walked around a very busy part of Manhattan and then a very busy part of Montreal. In Montreal, in a place with many skyscrapers during rush hour with lots of people around me, it was dropping "frames" of audio pretty regularly, at least a few times per minute in the worst area.

In other places in Montreal they worked perfectly fine for a half hour at a time on mile long walks.

It turns out some places have severe interference; everywhere else (even Brooklyn), I've had no problems, or at worst a single drop out in an hour.

Interesting. I'm in Vancouver, and to be fair, I can do distances where it's fine. But I can also hit weird pockets (even on quiet streets) that seen just brutal. Trying it even with different Airpods and my partner's phone tells me it isn't a problem on my end. As mentioned, other Bluetooth headphones have no issue.

I totally believe some other folks have a much better time of it, but I just find it so bizarre (and frustrating). I wonder if a firmware/iOS update will help, or if it's a hardware limitation right now.

Got mine. Pairing was easy and very fast. Didn't even need to open my Bluetooth settings (like you would with other devices), but I already knew that thanks to the W1 chip.

Only had a chance to mess with it for a couple of minutes. And it fits my ear perfectly. I was moving my head around to see if it would fall off, and it wouldn't budge.

I'm going out later, so that'll be its first real test.

nice! Not quite auto switching (though in theory that could work pretty poorly), but it sounds pretty good. Thanks!

Fwiw I don't have issues with my iPhone 6 Plus, unless I intentionally cover up a certain part of the phone tightly wth my hand. Like the upper part. My phone is beat up though now as I've dropped it a couple times the past few weeks, iPhone 8 can't come soon enough! Normal use I have no issues. In fact one time I was in the backyard and left my phone by the door, walked to front of the house and it only started to cut out when I stepped outside the front door to get the mail. Was a good 25-30ft maybe? As soon as I stepped back into the house it was solid again.

These are a way better connection than my previous Powerbeats 2. I had to return those cause they would skip regularly when I would go for a run and had my phone in my pocket. Every time my leg would stride back, it would start to cut out slightly. Maybe that was a bad set though.

Outside interference is def a thing though with Bluetooth, not gonna deny that.

Just tested it out on my iPads to see how iCloud sync works with it, and it was also quickly available on it.

It would have been nice to get a notification that it's available though. I saw it pop up on Control Centre and selected it from there.

So, quick update on this. I Walk with my iphone SE in my front shirt pocket, and for the hell of it, I tried turning it upside down (lightning/headphone pointing up), and I'll be fucking damned if my walk home wasn't 100% perfect. That includes multiple spots that were guaranteed to give me shit beforehand. It was completely fine now.

I'm going to have to test this further, especially at one spot in the city that is absolutely brutal, but hilariously, this seemed to provide a decent workaround for me.

Thanks for the tip!

Also while traveling with my AirPods, I encountered a strange bug where when switching between iPhone and iPad, the AirPods would not be as loud as on the next device. This meant that while I could listen to a podcast on an airplane, I could not hear a movie being played on an iPad. It was strange, and I could never get it to replicate reliably or find a fix. It just seemed to solve itself after a while.

All my bluetooth headphones drop out in Times Square. Just physics. Too many signals. But 99% of the time no drop outs.

I love mine. Especially listening to podcasts with one only in one ear While working around the house.

Yea. I really like the open design. Had an electrical short in the house while I was listening to hardcore history and I heard the pop of the wires and was able to shut the power before a full-scale fire broke out. It's great to be able to hear around me.

I have my powerbeats for the train and the rest of my commute. But for the office and home needing to hear if someone's calling me: Airpods all day.

I finally got a pair today after a six week wait. They connect as seamlessly as I hoped. Went for a run playing music off my Apple Watch and everything worked perfectly. Really happy with them.

I was using it a lot this evening, and I think I'll stick to controlling volume and track changing on my phone until iOS 11 comes out and allows us to set playback controls on the AirPods. Using Siri to do that out in public was weird.

Picked up a pair last week after buying a set for my wife as an anniversary present. My experience has been fantastic. They sound great and fit nicely. Only issues I have is talking to Siri, which on occasion doesn't do as I ask. When it does work however, it's really great.

That's the life changing part for me but I had to cut it out since my daughter thought I was ignoring her. It's awesome cooking dinner and having CNN running or exercising and watching a show without having to worry about cables. Also car trips are great since the kid has iPad games or cartoons blasting in the back seat.
