HELLO THERE: Obi-Wan Kenobi film (finally) in the works

You just wait until we get that Palpatine movie.

That's why every May 4th I construct a model of the Galactic Senate, take it outside and wait for the Star Wars Story Group to arrive and award a movie to the fan who's most sincere.

That's an odd and somewhat random choice for director, but could be worse. If Ewan signs on I'm there. Guy was great as Obi-Wan despite how shit the Prequels were.

I would love it if everyone was hyped for McGregor and then they announced they're going to use a horrific CGI resurrection of Alec Guinness instead

Great news about the project but the fuck at this directorial pick. I guess that young director thing is dead now.

He wasn't alone.
You want me to do what now?

Really? Daldry worse than Trevorrow?

That's kinda surprising to hear. I like Daldry. I mean, I'm not like a huge fan or anything but he's certainly not a director you'd expect to be assigned a Star Wars film, which makes me pretty interested in what he would do.

(Especially considering I think at one point LFL was considering Zack Snyder for something along these lines, so hey.)

Why the dislike for Daldry?

Snyder basically pitched Seven Samurai with Jedi to George and it never went forward.

Finally. Hot damn!

And I'm pretty sure Ewan is going to return. He knows he was the second most well received character in the prequel series (Qui Gonn is the GOAT, though). I loved his Obi-Wan, so he better fucking come back! And just 1 movie? Get out of here. I need my wandering Ronin Obi-Wan series where he just travels the galaxy trying to atone, before settling on Tatooine permanently.

Daldry's filmography has some of the worst, most degenerate examples of "oscar bait" in the history of film. And the fact his films actually get nominated makes it even worse.

I couldn't think of someone I'd want to make a Star Wars film less than Daldry.

McGregor has aged to damn well. LOL.

They are still going to have to age him up a little but he deserves to be in a OK star wars movie.

Obi-Wan's a beloved character and they have almost twenty years of free time to play with. A spin-off focused on him was a no-brainer.
He's a beloved character but there's nothing we need answers to or immediately interesting about the premise. He's an outcast who's supposed to be living on Tatooine watching over Luke and he can't even fight Vader. I hope I'll be pleasantly surprised though. I'd be more interesting in him making a Clone Wars movie.

I'm ok with this, but I really want this Star Wars Stories to be more than just solo adventures and origin stories for the classic characters. I want more stuff like Rogue One, new stories with new characters in new corners of the galaxy.

Visually he looks much younger, though. I think he would nail it.

His hairline is pretty rough :p. Although they could put a wig on him easily enough. He's certainly a capable actor no doubt about that, but why ruin the continuity when you don't have to.

I can't say I comprehend why was this guy picked as director.

I like that it's a guy you'd otherwise never expect to get a Star Wars film.

Too many Star Wars fans think of genre like they do the carrying cases for their action figures - there's only certain slots that certain people can fit in and they never allow for anyone else to rearrange that.

Kershner applying his POV to Empire is part of why Empire is so good. People who don't normally make sci-fi bringing their sensibilities to bear on sci-fi/fantasy can be a really interesting approach that turns out some great stuff.

I'll take something stupid but ultimately inoffensive like Jurassic World over the exploitative garbage of Extremely Loud and Incredible Close any day. If, for some awful reason, I was forced to watch one of only these two movies.

Basically this.

I wonder what timeframe they are going for. McGregor would make sense if it is supposed to about 10 years post RotS.

He would be about 50 by the time this film is being released.

How old was Luke in ANH?

To be fair, Alec Guiness didn't have a hairline.

I hope whatever they do is just a cool Star Wars genre piece, like a Western, and not try and do some expanded universe explanation shit. Just let Obi-Wan have a cool adventure that doesn't tie into and setup other stuff in the series after the fact.

I want something like Blackthorn with Obi-Wan. Just an old man getting into some shit. One last big adventure before ANH that doesn't have anything to do with that stuff.

Congrats, you were the first to push all in on lazy, forced cynicism yawwnnnnn.
You have your opinion and I have my own. I apologize that after only a few years of having an annual Star Wars film that I'm already bored by how Disney is handling these projects. I didn't like Rogue One and this Hans Solo film is, most likely, going to be a disaster. Maybe it's just me but films based on characters and events I already know about don't excite me. I want new characters and brand new stories.

Stop encouraging this lazy prequel shit you guys.

Honestly they have a lot of freedom with what they could do with this film barring killing Kenobi. Prequels aren't inherently bad. Problem with the Solo film in comparison is that Solo's character arc and development are done in the OT itself. Here they have more leeway with how they could handle Kenobi's character.
