Scar and Mufasa weren't actually related?!

Director doesn't know what he's talking about. In the wild brothers form coalitions all the time and are in the same pride. Also in the movie mufasa calls scar brother multiple times.
Dumb dumb dumb.

Mufasa scrambled desperately to reach the top of the cliff. "Scar! Brother! Help me!"

Scar sunk his claws deep into Mufasa's paws and leaned in to whisper:

"We're just neighbours."

For real though this changes things. When They were brothers, Scar's act was one of betrayal. Fratricide is a big deal. Now it's just a power struggle between a dominant and an ascendant male.

Hmm that would be pretty interesting... if Scar and Mufasa werent explicitly referred to as brothers and Simba didn't call Scar uncle multiple times.

This is dumb. Unless they're going to re-release a new version where they change spoken lines referring to Scar in family terms (brother, uncle). He's his brother in the movie, the end. They may have speculated as to not making him related based on nature or whatever, but the end result is what it is.

Uhhh, brothers is pretty much the ONLY way you'd have multiple adult male lions in a pride. Coalitions of brothers commonly oust rival males and together live in the pride. This is not unusual....their retcon is less realistic as unrelated males would be a total no go, while brothers working together is not uncommon.

He's now a Final Fantasy villain lmao.

The new Lion Guard cartoon says that the first born gets to be King/Queen, and the second born gets superpowers which are supposed to be used in defense of the King/Queen.

Mufasa was the first born, and Scar was the second born, so Scar got superpowers which were supposed to be used in service of Mufasa, but he chose instead to betray his brother, which corrupted him and turned him evil. He is explicitly Mufasa's biological brother in the current Disney canon.

Simba never had a sibling.

Simba's first born daughter, Kiara, is the future Queen (Oh noes, females are allowed to rule? Where has my real-world animal kingdom accuracy gone? Thanks Obama), and in Lion King 2 she hooks up with Scar's bad boy not-son (wink wink) Kovu.

The new cartoon centers around Simba's second born, Kion, who has superpowers and is supposed to protect Kiara, and try not to turn evil like Scar did. Apparently. I haven't seen it.

What the fuck is going on

Wait is that why the pride lands went to shit when scar took over

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
The Lion King is set to be released in Blu-ray and DVD later this month, and so Rob Minkoff, the movie’s director, and Don Hahn, the producer, have gone on a small press tour. In an interview with Hello Giggles, they casually revealed that Scar and Mufasa aren’t related because a real lion pride would never include two related males.

fuck

off

Weren't there side stories showing Mufasa's and Scar's parents, and told how Scar got the name Scar? I don't think the director is right in this case.

Not to mention that Scar makes a crack to Simba that he's from the shallow end of the gene pool.

Bullshit on the director's part. Also, it's make believe- we can fucking pretend that the Lions are family when they say they are.

The crack was actually to Mufasa.

Mufasa: Sarabi and I didn't see you at the presentation of Simba.

Scar: {Faking astonishment} That was today? Oh, I feel simply awful.
{He turns and start scraping his claws on the rock wall. Zazu cringes at the sound.}
Scar: {Admiring his claws} ...Must have slipped my mind.

Zazu: Yes, well, as slippery as your mind is, as the king's brother, you should have been first in line!

{Scar clicks his teeth at Zazu, who has flown near his face. Zazu takes cover behind Mufasa's foreleg. Scar bends down to speak to him.}
Scar: Well, I was first in line... until the little hairball was born.

Mufasa: {Lowering his head and meeting Scar eye to eye} That "hairball" is my son... and your future king.

Scar: Ohh, I shall practice my curtsy.
{Scar turns away and starts to exit}

Mufasa: {Warning} Don't turn your back on me, Scar.

Scar: {Looking back} Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps YOU shouldn't turn YOUR back on me.

Mufasa: {Roars and literally jumps in front of Scar, baring his teeth for the first time} Is that a challenge?

Scar: Temper, temper. I wouldn't dream of challenging you.

Zazu: Pity! Why not?

Scar: {Looking at Zazu} Well, as far as brains go, I got the lion's share. But, when it comes to brute strength {looking at Mufasa} ...I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool.
{Exit Scar}

Zazu: {Deep sigh} There's one in every family, sire... Two in mine, actually. {perches on Mufasa's shoulder} And they always manage to ruin special occasions.

This. The brothers thing is far from the least accurate thing in this movie.

Jesus christ why can't we just fucking enjoy a children's animated movie for what it is.

Ya, there's being betrayed and then being betrayed by your brother. Accuracy isn't the issue.

Edit sounded off

get some go again
"Scar and Mufasa aren’t related because a real lion pride would never include two related males."

But that's not true?
i know right? i swear i've seen lion documentaries where brother lions team up and kill other lions and take over their prides.

Well this is a huge disappointment. Many of those fans who used the books as the backstory for Mufasa and Scar will be PO as well.

I still need to get the steelbook but 30 dollars is something I can't do right now.

Well Disney even gave out a book called A Tale of Two Brothers, part of a series of six books. Some consider them as non canon, as Simba has a son called Kopa in it.

Anyway, they are clearly brothers there, eventhough Mufasa looks more like their father who is named Ahadi.

Even if they wanted to be realistic in a singing animal cartoon, there are plenty of examples of brother lions raising a pride together. There are even prides raised by triplets.

Who da fuck is Kovu?

*googles*

oh

Is Lion King II any good? Or should I not bother?

I mean, it's pretty damn cheesy in parts, but it's entirely watchable. Easily better than the large majority of Disney's direct to video sequels. It also has a pretty fantastic opening song that's a worthy successor to The Circle of Life, but that's kind of cheating since it was written for the musical. :p

Side note: I believe it's still by far the most successful direct to home video film in history.

And its soundtrack is fantastic.

For a direct-to-video Disney sequel, it's really good. I really like the music and the plot is actually decent.

OK, I'm convinced.

...when you say superpowers, you're not being literal, right?

Why are all of Disney's post-90s TV show spin-offs mistakes.

I don't watch the show, but I do know that Simba's son has a roar that summons the power of previous kings and they all show up in the clouds like Mufasa to roar with him.

The roar is so powerful it uproots trees and sends them flying...so yeah, superpowers.

I had no idea there was a Lion King Cinematic Universe, I thought it was just the one movie. This is kind of blowing my mind tbh

lol, how? The second movie was massive.

There was also Lion King 1 1/2, where if The Lion King is Hamlet, then that movie is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. And there's the Timon & Pumbaa TV series which ran for three seasons.

My brother and I have different fathers but the same mother. Easy explanation.

Scar's father was king, Mufasa's father killed Scar's father. Scar stays in the shadows while his younger brother gets groomed to become the new king.

Don't worry, they're technically brothers, I'm sure they'll be brothers too in the upcoming remake, so I wouldn't trust what Minkoff says, even if he is in the right to say it.
