After finishing Until Dawn, is Heavy Rain/Beyond Two Souls worth my time?

My girlfriend and I finished Until Dawn last night and we had a blast, so now we’re looking for more “interactive-drama” games to play together. I tried to get her into Life is Strange, but she didn’t really dig the setting and quickly became bored. Now, it seems that our only options left are Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls; but I fear that Until Dawn has rather spoilt us and these two might become very tame in comparison

What’s the general consensus on both of them? Are there any other narrative-driven games out there worth our time?

Suffer through the David Cage series of sadness
Heavy Rain gets dumb, but not too dumb so it's probably his best game
Beyond 2 Souls is so bad you need to experience it
Also try indigo prophecy to complete the Sadness Trilogy

Nothing David Cage has touched rivals Until Dawn.

But between the two, Heavy Rain has big boosters and Beyond was heavily shit on. So, I'd go with HR.

Sure, just be aware that they're all in quite different genres. Until Dawn will most likely be your favorite of the three, but, all of them have good stuff in there.

Honestly the play them. It will be the most hilarious experience you will have ever experienced in a game. Honestly just do the entire Sadness Trilogy.

If you've played Telltale games, they're somewhere in between that and Until Dawn.

Worth a playthrough if you like those types of games, but Until Dawn is just special.

I liked Heavy Rain when it was released, not so much right now. Beyond was always mediocre to me.

David Cage is a bad director and writer.

You can try to stomach Beyond, but you're more likely to enjoy Heavy Rain. Just be mindful that it predates the other two and carries some design drawbacks.

Not so much Beyond, but Heavy Rain is for sure. In fact it does a much better job of the whole "Your choices matter" slogan than Until Dawn.

Still love UD, but yeah, I think Heavy Rain is superior.

ehhh... Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls are OK, Beyond is better, but they both WISH they were as good as Until Dawn is. UD is the absolute champion of that style of game. IMHO I'd point you towards Telltale over David Cage stuff. The latter gets... hokey. The TT stuff is much simpler which limits the chances of getting too crazy which is what happens with Heavy Rain and Beyond.

Beyond is fine, though. If you can get it for $20 or less I say go for it

Heavy Rain is fun. It's written like shit, but a lot of the scenarios are interesting enough to make you want to see what's next.
Beyond is pretty good too. The acting is better but the story is even more out there.

Until Dawn is better than both games combined, but the Cage games are so damn weird. Play them for that.

Neither are as good as Until Dawn. Until Dawn is much better written and understood the writing conventions of the genre it was working in really well. Until Dawn's tone is kind of perfect and the Cage stuff has this really overbearing maudlin coating to everything that really drags it down.

That said, I still think Heavy Rain has some merit as a game and has some interesting ideas but doesn't land a lot of them. It's a solid experience and I still think people should seek it out as one of the more 'important' games of that generation.

I really dislike Beyond Two Souls. The non-sequential narrative does nothing to enhance the game and it has massive pacing issues. It's also fairly pretentious and lacks a lot of self-awareness. BTS was an absolute slog to get through and I can't imagine those feelings would not be magnified coming off something like Until Dawn which has such strong pacing.

If you like pretentious french misogyny and rape scenes that you play, go ahead!

Always remember, if theres a female character in a david cage game, she will either A) fall in love with the main male character or B) have aN ALMOST rape scene

I find it funny that A happens in Omikron and Indigo Prophecy, A and B happen in heavy rain, and beyond has MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF B

He had to really build up to the sexual assault, huh

Detroit is gonna be hell

I thought Heavy Rain was very good, it only falls apart at the very end when you start analyzing every little thing for plot holes. For 90% of the time it is very compelling and so I think it is worth playing.

Not quite as good as Until Dawn but I enjoyed my time with them. Check them out if you're interested. There are some good moments. You'll see the influence.

Haven't tried Heavy Rain yet, but Beyond is one of my favorite ps3 exclusives.

As far as I remember, there were no rape scenes in Beyond?

I think people are a bit too harsh on Heavy Rain. It has obvious plot holes and unresolved ends but it was still a fun ride. It was well done enough to get my family on board the same way Until Dawn did, but the consensus is definitely that Until Dawn is better. I haven't played Beyond Two Souls so I can't comment on that.

What about modern TellTale's offerings OP? My family enjoyed The Walking Dead quite a bit.

Heavy Rain is alright.
But Beyond 2 souls is utter trash and a complete waste of time. The story is kinda crappy with lack of direction. Would highly recommend you ignore it.

There's plenty that annoys me with Heavy Rain but I think it would be worth your time in terms of being good for a similar experience (playing with someone else, pad swapping, heavily story-based etc.). There's plenty of short comings - particularly how it seems to go from being really ham-fisted/insensitive one minute to obtuse the next.

Butttt...there's enough about the story and the characters to make you want to progress and find out more, plenty to speculate on together and it's got some decent pacing in terms of exploration/QTE stuff that makes passing the controller feel quite organic, timing wise.

Jodie almost gets forced into a blowjob after saying no, and when sje goes to the bar as a punk teen 3 men try to rape her on a pool table

As others have said, it might be worth the look.

I never played beyond, but the concept sort of turned me off.

I enjoyed my time with Heavy rain, just don't read any of the nitpicks about it beforehand. It isn't great, it is pretty fun if you go in with low-ish expectations and don't try to tear it apart. I'm not saying the criticisms against it aren't valid, but I think you can have a pretty good time with it.

On the other hand, I played HR before UD, and UD is quite a bit better, so I'm not sure how I would have felt the other way around.

Heavy Rain is my favorite game from the last gen. It gets unintentionally comical at times, but overall it's pretty good the first time you go through it. There are some pretty memorable moments.

Beyond was an extremely disappointing game. Can't really recommend it.

I enjoyed Heavy Rain very much, but haven't touched it since it first came out, so perhaps nostalgia is clouding my judgment. I think you should try it out though. I couldn't finish Beyond Two Souls for whatever reason. Something was off about that game even though there is similar gameplay to Heavy Rain.

Yes, both have issues in their writing (but not moreso than the average hollywood show/film, to be honest), but their atmosphere is fantastic and they have many tense situations. I think both titles are a great ride.

I liked HR when it was released, I still do
I never finished BTS.
Fahreneit (or Indigo Prophecy) is my least favorite of the trilogy. It gets too ridiculous later on

You may like Heavy Rain because of multiple options/paths/endings like UD

Granted, I love the interactive drama genre in general, I think after Until Dawn, i'd recommend jumping into Beyond Two Souls, for the sole reason that it's quite ridiculous and goofy. I had more fun playing that game with a couple friends by not taking the game to seriously.

Neither Heavy Rain nor Beyond Two Souls are bad games per se, and if you like the genre, they're both worth checking out.

God no. They are fucking terrible.

Maybe play Fahrenheit on your phone if you're really feeling masochistic

Heavy Rain is actually a good game with some flaws, just don't play it more than once. It really falls apart on a 2nd play-through harder than almost any other choice-based adventure game, mainly because of the abundance of plot holes or contrivances.

Beyond 2 Souls.. lol I think the PS4 version had a chronological way to play the game which might have fixed some issues? I never touched either version.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Honestly, no.

You've already played the best of 'that type' of game in Until Dawn. A shame your SO didn't like Life is Strange because that's the only 'one of these' type of games which is better than Until dawn IMO.

I've only played BTS and I can say with confidence that I had more fun watching people play it. I didn't get a personal experience of Heavy Rain - which seemed more enjoyable - but I had way more fun watching people play it than I THINK I would of had playing it. It's too easy to see the holes now, but it's still a lot of fun watching people go through it and get super excited as it goes along.

TL;DR for the OP: Skip Beyond but watch someone play it if you're curious, and maybe check out Heavy Rain. I know you're looking for something more to do together and not alone, but imo BTS isn't worth it.

Heavy Rain is the only one of those games I've played and I kind of loved it, although you have to forgive a little jankiness.

I can't tell you how it compares to UD, of course... I should really play that.

They're not really all that similar to Until Dawn, mind you. I like Heavy Rain despite some cheesy moments (press X to Jason etc.), but Beyond was a bit eh. Not bad at all, but it felt like a bit of a slog at times.
