Trump addresses nation on Afghanistan strategy

I can't watch this, it just sounds so disjointed. Who the fuck is writing these speeches? Are we invading Iran? Pakistan?

What the fuck was that?

I agree so much with what he's saying. Micro-managing from the White House and setting arbitrary timelines don't help. But then he says so much that makes me cringe =/

But he's not talking about "micromanaging." He's saying he's eschewing the normal (legal) channels which were created to prevent immoral and illegal acts being committed. There's a reason these are in place. If you commit immoral acts to "fight" terrorism, all you do is end up creating more of them in opposition, as ISIS can point to these actions and use the innocent lives they cost as recruiting tools.

And I have no doubt this is what he is saying, because this is the same man that keeps bringing up the debunked General Pershing lie and praises what what've been an obvious war crime.

Arbitrary deadlines are the only way we exit Afghanistan in our lifetimes.

If it comes down to conditions, those conditions can be played to keep us in the region in order to protect the government there without them taking responsibility for themselves.

It's like two different speeches mixed into one. So the everything stays the same but with more drone strikes and bombings, but at the same time America no longer intervenes in other countrie's affairs? How does that work?

Who gets a visit of some good ol' American freedom this year?

Syria?

Iran?

North Korea?

Venezuela?

Looks like it's.........Pakistan! You're our big winner tonight!

I think him mentioning that we will be working more with India, who has lent billions to the Afghan government, and literally threatening Pakistan (which was done by both Bush and Obama) this is a big shift. Pakistan will not tolerate Indian interference in Afghanistan. Afghanistan in the view of the Pakistani military is their fallback if ever an invasion from India.

India interfering in Afghanistan is isolating the Pakistanis and will lead them down a dangerous road.

If you guys think its nothing by him mentioning India then you need to look up some more info on South Asian Foreign Policy.

I'm honestly really curious to see what the Breitbart headline is for this.

1. I stand by this being McMaster slashing Miller's version of this speech
2. The entire back half of the speech felt like they used Pence's speechwriter. We were all zoned out, but the latter half talking about sacrifice had way more personal touches and gravitas than normal Trump speeches, sounded a LOT like most Pence speeches.

The words by themselves were just that, words. But they were made hollow by the one who gave them.

I am just following this thread and sounds like a waste of 30 minutes.

Also Pakistan because idk...

Pakistan because of the Northwest Frontier Province and the movement of the Taliban and Haqqani networks. This is the historic way that these fighters funnel into Afghanistan.

I can't imagine being in the military and sitting there and being like 'yep, that's my commander-in-chief'

I just texted my friend and told him we were probably invading Pakistan, but I couldn't tell because Trump is such a fucking moron.

My friend, who deployed with me to Afghanistan, said he could only manage 17 seconds of Trump before turning off the TV to pour out some bourbon.

No victory conditions. Nothing even that hints at practical realities. The closest he came to talking about how Afghanistan would look when we left was to describe "everlasting peace". WTF

No mention of a strategy except that one exists and he won't talk about it. No pivot except that we're going to stop focusing on losing and start thinking for once about winning.

Punctuate that with rally-speech and ham-fisted attempts to use patriotism to heal the wounds he helped sow over the past weeks, and you're left with a bunch of hot air signifying nothing.

I can't believe that I actually expected something. Something tangible. But there was literally zero that wasn't pure platitudes.
