Jake Tapper is doing a townhall with Paul Ryan

It seems like this was scheduled awhile ago as a post-healthcare failure getting the message out thing(Probably something along the line of: "The House did its job, not my fault!"). It will be interesting to see Ryan get grilled.

Next week, Monday the 21st.

This could be absolutely brutal. I'm not even sure why Ryan is doing it.

Maybe he's converting to Democrat on live TV?

Expect a lot of:

"Look, what happens in the White house is none of my business. I'm just trying to do the job we were elected to do."

Tapper can be great but he can also waffle with politicians who are "nice people." I can't recall which interview but I've seen him softball republicans before.

It's unlikely that there will be any scathing questions hurled at Ryan. They screen the questions used in these televised CNN town halls so they lessen the chance of political figures getting hit in the head with an audience member's shoes.

Even if someone brought legitimate fire in question form, and put Ryan on the spot, he's a fucking pro at not giving a shit. He'll deflect, spin, and proceed to shrug it off.

this will be a waste of time like the Cruz/Sanders health care debate.

Because Ryan known nothing other than talking points, the media is soft, and the people in the audience mostly won't know anything and will ask general questions which will allow him to BS his way through it.

What we need is someone in the media who knows their shit actually interviewing these people on their actual policies, in depth.

That's how you expose their garbage.

Like I said, I need 10 minutes. Alas, I'll never have them.

How much of a "Townhall" will this really be? I expect a manicured audience compared to the heckling and disastrous GOP town halls we saw last Spring.

It's televised, the audience will be civil. I expect that we'll hear from some strong "concerned" citizens, but don't expect viral videos. There's rarely heated moments that make the volunteer uncomfortable.

All of the questions are apparently going to be pre-screened.

Ryan's Democrat challenger in 2018, Randy Bryce (aka IronStache), is trying to get CNN to allow him to debate Ryan - which he knows won't happen. So right now he's raising funds to run an ad that'll play during the Ryan "town hall".

He hasn't won his primary yet. So he doesn't have a spot on the town hall.

This is on right now.

He kiiiiinda condemned trump.for his comments, was still pretty wishy washy about it though.

Nah, he just said it was "Morally ambiguous," making Trump sound like a confused child, but not reaaaally racist.

He was cornered on the Tuesday "Good people on both sides" comment so he had to say it was horrible. But then he went on to say that Trump's last speech was good, and his Monday speech was good, so it evens out or something.

Ryan is really being kinda dodgy on this whole thing. Keeps turning the whole Trump/White supremacy thing into being a "partisan" issue.

On the Charolettesville comments "I just think he needs to do better, and I think he did that today"

And CNN is going all out on this. Punches not being pulled.

That detail has been in the talking points for most the pub politicians and pundit the last few days.

Paul Ryan acting like he cares about background checks now.

This is basically turning into "Hey, Paul, defend the president". And that's alright.
