Hollywood Studios Could Launch $30 Movie Rental Service Early Next Year

I still like the theaters. And gave up on the value proposition a long time ago. Right now, i expect $5 for something on my TV.

Why shouldn't I wait on Redbox or on demand? I'll just wait the extra few months. The movie doesn't fucking spoil. And there are plenty of options. There are 6 comic book movies. Sorry 6 tent pole movies. There's usually something around the corner coming out or something on rental that i have missed. I can understand people who want to save on movie night and see the latest but something is missing.

Most of the people I meet on the internet seem to have no problem waiting on Redbox or even watching some shitty streaming cam version. My home theater is nice but it's not Dolby atmos multi sub nice.

$30 to rent a movie? Lol what a crock of shit. What am I gonna do, charge my friends to come watch a movie? These people are completely disconnected from reality, shit like this will just encourage more pirating.

Plenty of older people don't go to the movies and wait for things to hit cable because they don't want to have to deal with the morons constantly checking their phones or they just aren't comfortable in movie seats. Depending on the movie & their circumstances this could catch on with that crowd.

If a film is 45 days from opening and is still in theaters, I'm probably going to spring for the the $5 matinee rather than cough up $30 to watch it on my flatscreen.
If a film loses all its screens in six weeks then it isn't worth the price of admission, let alone $30.

This is for rich lazy people with very nice home theater setups and nobody else.

Right?

If i didn't pony up for the theater, i didn't really want to see it. So I'll wait 6 months and pay $1 at redbox. Or see it on HBO.

30 bucks? Fuck, no. I'm not even renting movies on Amazon or PlayStation Video because that often is more expensive than going to the theatre or getting the Blu-ray.

Maybe I have a different opinion on this because Germany literally has almost no IMAX cinemas. That's the only place I can think of where you pay such horrendous prices to see a movie.

If Hollywood studios get their wish, a new premium video-on-demand service could finally be introduced in the first two months of 2018. One likely scenario: Consumers would pay $30 to rent a movie only 30 to 45 days after the film has opened in theaters.

If it was day and date, would make perfect fiscal sense if it were 4K, HDR etc. You could rent a Pixar movie, have the neighbor' s kids over, make hot dogs. But it ain't day and date and it won't be 4K, HDR etc.

HOWEVER - most "lost seats" for movie makers are from folks who didn't have time to go see it. There's a big audience for the right kind of releases at the right price, but they should keep the theater screenings as the literal marquee experience.

Wow, so close yet so far.

£30 a month for near launch releases? Sure.

£30 a film? Fuck off.

Otherwise it's far better just to wait until Sky Cinema gets them and pay their monthly fee on NowTV.

As a parent of four, this would actually save me money, but at that timeframe, why even bother? Why not just wait until it hits digital/Blu-ray?

Makes sense to me.

I'll pay a premium to avoid going to the movie theater (unless it's a great chain, like Alamo Drafthouse).

Edit: the 30-45 day delay kind of kills it for me

I'd pay $30 for a rental that releases the same day as the theater. 2 tickets is $25 anyway. If I was good waiting 30-45 days after release, I'm probably fine with waiting until I can rent it for $5.

If that came out in Canada, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Currently my options with a 1 year old are get a babysitter or don't watch it at all until blu ray release. $30 is a bargain. If you're a single or a couple, it wouldn't be for you but currently they're missing a huge part of the market with families just choosing not go if kids are too young or movies aren't age appropriate.

$30-45 a month later is a tough sell. By that time most movies have sort of exited the cultural zeitgeist, and the sense of urgency or FOMO is gone, so what's waiting another couple of months to just rent it for $5?

This is a good deal for a family with two kids if there is no cheap dollar theater nearby. Taking 2 kids to a movie can increase the total price to 60 bucks before you factor in popcorn and drinks.

This could really work for families or couples who want a few beers and have a nice set up. Obviously makes less sense if you're on your own.

I would pay $30 for 1 week delay on new releases.

My girlfriend and I at home with our own snacks and not having to commute to a theater sounds good to me.

$30, Rent and 45 days don't mesh well for me.

I'd pay $30 to rent an HD version the week or second week of release. Not a month and a half later.

With how soon the digital version hits now, which you would then own, I don't see this being a viable option unless you absolutely need to see it but don't like going to the theatre.

With tickets being $12.25 where I go, and $8 on Tuesdays, I don't see $30 being a magic number for me.

But at the same time, if you go with a bunch of friends usually, or absolutely hate going to the theatre, or live in an area where it's a two-screen smaller theatre, it could definitely be worth it.

Make it $20 2 weeks out and we'll talk. The theater industry can suck a fat chode... either bring down the prices or offer services that are worth the price.

Day and date.....maybe after the first weekend or week. Anything longer than that and I'd just wait on DVD.

Pretty much. I'd spend that much if it's within less than 7 days so I can be part of the initial hype and discussion. Past 21-30 days it's no longer current news, spoilers are fair game, and might as well wait for Bluray/Google Play rentals.

A $30 rental for a 30 to 45 day old movie? If you went 45 days without seeing the movie wouldn't most people just wait another few weeks for the digital release or Blu-ray or a much cheaper rental?

If it was day 1 with theaters, or even a week delayed I think tons of people might do it.
