Best and Worst Anime Revivals

Rebuild goes batshit crazy which is why I love it.

The Original Series will still be great no matter what rebuild does, if it's a cycle, a diferent universe, a reboot, doesn't matter. EoE in all it's brilliance is still brilliant and has no real follow-up. Despite Anno's trolls symbolism.

Alternate Universes and reimaginings work like that, there's the fun in it going bonkers with stuff like WILLE and the Failures of Infinity
My favourite version of Evangelion is still the Angelic Days manga. Mainly because it's not so fucking depressing all the damn time.

To clarify, Soul Eater Not! is based on an existing manga spinoff by the same author. My understanding is that as an adaptation of that, it's adequate, but the base concept has its issues.

Yeah, I know Soul Eater Not! was based on the manga spinoff. But, considering after the first Soul Eater instead of a Brotherhood remake we got the manga spinoff, I believe it can be added to the examples.

It's me, I'm the only guy that likes Digimon Adventure Tri

You aren't the only one. I also like Tri. While not as good as Adventure, I feel it is superior to Adventure 2. Plus it is nice see the original characters as teenagers.

Eureka AO was so bad. Such a disappointment.

Also, is the entirety of Berserk like that? Does it have the quality of so bad, it's good since those gifs are hilarious.

Osomatsu-san deserves mention.

I never watched the 60's or 80's version, but its first episode brilliantly sets you up for the entire show.
It's a fantastic comedy from the director of Gintama.

Yes, Berserk is entirely like that with the exception of a few brief 2d scenes and still images haphazardly thrown in. It might look funny from the gifs, but believe me it is not fun to watch. The reason bad movies like Troll 2 or The Room are so funny is because of the fact that the people behind those films actually had passion and wanted to make them. There is heart and soul in Tommy Wiseau's The Room and that shines throughout the film and is what makes it so fun to watch. There is no passion in Berserk. It was obviously nothing more than an attempt to ride the coattails of the manga, no aspirations or goals besides the green money man at the end (which in the end, wasn't waiting anyway).

Stuff like The Room and Troll 2 are so bad they're good because they have heart and soul, whereas Berserk just feels ugly and tired.

Let's just say this; I would be 100% unfazed if it turned out that Berserk 2016/2017 was actually a money laundering scheme all along.

It has some funny gif moments, but it is a very excruciating watch if you have no prior Berserk knowledge, and just absolutely soul crushing if you do.

Funny to think that Dragonball Evolution was the best thing to happen to Dragonball in 20 years. Thank God it existed.

Super Eye Patch Wolf made me realize how bad the new Berserk series was. I watched it and knew it had issues, but was still entertained. Now I just wished Netflix scooped this series up.

Worst is without a doubt Berserk.
It's like they took 2 first year 3D animation students and told them to make an entire season in a week with a budget of $50 and 2 Burger King gift cards.

I also really disliked the Digimon revival. I dont mind the characters having to deal with teen issues but it's done in a boring way and with terrible animation. The whole Digimon aspect is also completely pushed to the side. The Action-digimon centric scenes are kept to a minimum.

Best.

FMA: Brotherhood.
Unpopular opinion but I like how the first FMA anime looked and sounded way more than Brotherhood. Still, it stays true to the manga which instantly makes it great. It's just a better story with better characters.

Digimon Tri started so well but it well downhill on the last two episodes, they have no idea what they are doing :(

DB Super was shaky as fuck up until the current arc, which is straight up good IMO.

Yeah, Hunter x Hunter 2011 and FMA Brotherhood are masterpieces, no anime that ever finished can touch them.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is the best.

Which reminds me, I NEED the new Full Metal Panic to be one of the good ones.

Wait you mean I did the right thing by not watching the Eureka 7 sequel. Thank fuck.

Does the Tenchi series count, or are they all just separate with the same characters? I loved Muyo, but the different versions and story remixes just got too much after awhile and I had to just say no.

The only Tenchi that counts is the Ryo-ohki series (OVA). TV (also known as Universe), Forever (ABSOLUTE GARBAGE), Ai (SUPER DUPER ABSOLUTE GARBAGE) and the movies are all separate universes.

GXP and Geminar are the Ryo-ohki universe/timeline but from different leads perspectives.

Dual Parallel Trouble Adventure was retconned into being in the Ryoohki timeline as well. Fun

Has anyone seen the 4th season OVA for Tenchi Muyo as of yet? That certainly could qualify on either side of the coin depending on the quality.

Also this piece of shit won't have a formal mention from me

Man, Eureka 7 is still one of my favorite shows, AO was such a damn disappointment. It wasn't really an revival though, it was a sequel sometime into the future with different people.

For me, Hunter x Hunter is the best revival, a bummer Madhouse don't take on more classics like Rurouni kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho etc.

I still haven't watched Eva Rebuild. I really want to, but I haven't wanted to wait a long time between the movies, so I've been waiting for all of them to be released. I've come this far, and I'm not gonna back down now.

My favourite is probably Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I like some things in FMA 2003 better than in Brotherhood (tone and less focus on action, although there may have even been too little action), but overall Brotherhood is still the better anime in my opinion. I like both.

Other good ones I've seen would be the JJBA and Hunter x Hunter reboots, and the third season of Working!!, although that last one is in a lower tier of "good" than the other two.

The worst would be Berserk 2016. I know it's an easy answer, but if I avoided picking that one, my answer would be Dragon Ball Super, which I don't dislike; I'm just lukewarm on it.
Worst

Digimon

Hey the Digimon cast is All Grown Up! And they have teenage problems like dating and boyfriends and meeting new friends and having fights over high school stuff!!
P...also there's a couple of Digimons fighting here and there, but don't worry, it won't distract you from the teenage drama you love so much.
The show is different from the original series, but I think it is better for it. The latest part wasn't that great, but I really like the first three. The real world episodes of Digimon Adventure series were always some the best parts anyway.

Director of Gintama? How come I've never heard of this?! Going to watch it after work tonight! :)
Gintama is life

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Speaking of Gintama, to be honest I haven't been a fan of it since the revival two years ago when they got a new staff (BN Studios or something?), don't know if part of it has to do with the switch to a lot of serious arcs which I didn't really enjoy or what, but even in the comedy episodes things felt off.

I still need to finish watching the newest batch of episodes though.

I watched the first ep out of morbid fascination. I figured it'd be disappointing on both fronts and I was right, in that it's not really a good looking show with some embarrassing moments, but neither is it really a constant train wreck of awful animation; it really is almost constant mediocrity. Sometimes it even looks alright, but maybe they actually drew those parts and just messed with them a bit to fit in with the rest of the look.

Think its more sequel than revival but yeah i agree. The gintama anime has seriously slide downhill, last season was real bad. So dour, no fun and the production is pretty ropey.

God I wish I had never seen E7 Ao, it's so bad.

As is the Pocketful of Rainbows movie.

Chances are those three new movies will be bad as well.

As far as E7 is concerned just watch original and leave it at that.

You think I don't know about that? Directly connecting NGE to the trash that are the Rebuilds just makes it even more insulting. What was the point of posting this? Do you think that "it's a cycle! XD" shenanigans give free points?

...yes? In my book at least... blew my mind wide open when I stumbled upon the pointers online. I didn't catch them in 1.11/2.22 my first times through them. Things went horribly wrong much faster this time around because Shinji was more confident and driven this time. He chose a do-over, he tried to do things better, and things went to shit... 3rd impact (though really it is 4th impact but nobody could know this) happening much quicker. Then it was stopped and everyone took dramatic steps to keep it from continuing again... 14 years pass and then we are at 3.33. Shinji's father is still obsesses with his original goal, and the others are trying to stop them (NERV) and keep Shinji out of their hands.

Anyways, I struggle to keep the plot straight in my mind, but I managed to puke that paragraph out after reviewing some wikipedia to remind me. I can't wait to see what happens next... it's going to be some mind bending madness! I think we can all count on that. Maybe this time Shinji will say "fuck it" and leave everyone share existence in the soup.

And yeah for Best revivals, I thoroughly enjoyed most of the examples already listed but Yamato 2199 probably takes the cake. Although arguably it could have ended a few episodes early and it would have made for a more bittersweet ending.

Curious what the OP's source is that Eva 3.33 was a success. Unless they were just saying they thought the movie was good, in which case I really disagree:

2.0 was Anno fucking with people and people loved it. Going for the killshot on Asuka, starting Third Impact and having Kaworu arrive halfway through the damn Rebuild, there's so much subversion of a TV series fan's expectations. It's a huge part of what draws people to 2.0, not just Shinji finally growing a backbone. Character motivations are also clear and understandable.

3.0 fucks with people and is also a bad movie. That's why people were upset. Character motivations make no sense (the entire character dispositions of Misato and Asuka are gigantic misfires). Important events necessary to following what's going on are poorly explained or unexplained (don't get me started on the excuse that we are supposed to be in Shinji's shoes. That's a very dangerous play and unless you are an expert at that kind of very limited viewpoint exposition, it's going to fail, which it did). We get another fucking retread of the Rei arc. For a movie so many claim subverts expectations, it seems deadset on now-cliche retreads when it comes to character arcs. The real subversion was 2.0 Shinji getting shit done or 2.0 Asuka having empathy. Now Shinji is getting dragged around again.

4.0 can fix some of this, but it can't fix all of it.

This killed me man. Just awful!

I haven't watched any of it.

So like did the original flop in japan? How could this not get a decent budget.

A bigger question would why a manga as popular and running that long won't get a decent budget.

HxH 2011 is great. Meh artstyle and colors compared to the original anime, but still great regardless.

Berserk is clearly the worst.

Also, both episodes 25/26 and EOE would be "failures" when they aired by your metric people warmed up to them over time, also according to fan forums people seem hyped for 3.0+1.0 in 2045

You could very easily call 25+26 a failure, and I do.

End of Evangelion has been routinely praised since release, at the very least by critics.

I'm still disappointed in the latest DBSuper battles (like the last 10 episodes) but here's hoping they're saving the best choreography for the end.

Still sucks I have to constantly remind myself to completely forget power levels because their opponents seem weaker than Super Saiyan 1.
