Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

The dock doesn't scratch the screen, as it's of a weaker material than the Switch screen, it's the dust that accumulates in the dock. To prevent that, the best method would be using a glass protector, it's much more prone to shattering than the original Switch Screen BUT it is impossible for dust or sand to scratch it as it's much harder on the scale...

That's also the reason why you won't easily scratch your gorilla-glass Smartphones but they shatter instantly when they hit a hard surface. Mineral-Glass would be the much better choice but no one uses it besides watch makers and even they don't really like it as it isn't as scratch proof as saphire glass(that in return is prone to shattering)...

It doesn't matter if the material of the dock physically scratches the screen (citation needed, btw) when the design of the thing creates a contact point for said dust. No other docks have a contact point with the screen built in because everyone knows it will likely lead to damage.

My brother's glass screen protector was scratched by dust in the dock. Because the problem isn't the material of the screen, it's the design of the dock.

Sorry to bump with a slight off topic. Has someone verified if the issue of the "popping out screen" on the top right corner worsens or not? Thanks.

Less crisps and grease on the screen may help in the future?

So the dock has scratched my switch screen

I have lost the receipt though. I've contacted their customer support anyway, how neccesary is the receipt? Will they replace it for me?

How did the dock scratch your system in this way? There's a diagonal scratch over the width of the system, while the dock scratches are due to the vertical guiding strips towards the sides of the dock.

At this point, all ya'll need to get on board the amfilm tempered glass train and stop worrying.

Yup. Just spend a few bucks and get one for peace of mind. Hell, I'm using unbranded, $3 China ones and they've held up incredibly well.

For real.

I hate applying screen protector bullshit with a passion. But tempered glass is easy as hell and works.

I finally found a Switch today. All that was available was the neon. I really would have preferred a gray one, but it was neon or nothing. What's a good screen protector to buy for it?

So glad I got a glass screen protector, I wish skins would have been an option to though. I've got very clear dock marks on the back of my switch - at least they're on the back.

This dock is such a bad design.

Yeah, my problem with scratches seems to be with the back of the Switch. I know that's not nearly as big of a deal as the screen but I wish there was a way to protect the back too (not just from the dock but in general).

2 month Moleskin update: My Switch still has zero scratches and glides in and out of the dock like butter. If you're still worried about scratching your screen and don't want the hassle of a screen protector, I highly recommend it. Makes the Switch dock feel gasp... premium.

Just cut and and stick.

Find it in the footcare aisle of any pharmacy for like 5 bucks.
I will do this.

Had a film protector since day 1 (3rd march) as the glass ones were out of stock initially

Switched to Orzy as soon as it was available

Zero scratches on the switch, the film or the glass and dock/undock it at least once or twice a day...

My cat walking over it on the bed where I put it down and then using it as a launch pad to jump up onto the shelves... his claws cracked the glass! Swapped it out very easily and quickly and no damage to the actual switch itself - felt glad that Orzy include 2 screens per pack :)

My switch has an amFilm tempered glass screen protector applied, and after docking only 2 times it now has long thin scratches along the bottom edge (and even one on the top edge) of the screen protector itself.

Admittedly it's a tighter fit with the glass protector on but even so I cant quite figure out how these scratches are getting there from the dock (especially the top edge one, but I did accidentally try put it in upside down once so that's probably that!)

The very bottom edge of the protector has two horizontal scratches that curve up a little...symmetrical on left and right sides of the screen too, near the speaker(?) holes.
Really odd, and a bunch of smaller scratches next to the screen left side scratch ...it was perfect before docking.

I can't see how these even appeared as the switch doesn't slide around horizontally in the dock, only vertically.
It hasn't been shifted around left or right enough in the dock to even cause these fine scratches but there they are.

Also has little rub/abrasions on either side of the screen where the rubber pads contact.

Would be really annoyed if this was all on the actual screen itself!

Edit:

On much closer inspection what appeared to be scratches may actually be weird thin air bubble lines under the protector. The screen protector does seem to form odd shaped pockets with switch use every now and again at the very edges, which are usually easy to remove.
I did try that initially with these ones that look like long thin scratches and nothing happened.

But now with different lighting, they appear to be under, not on top of the protector and in a few places I was able to break them up a little, but can't seem to remove them with the usual rubbing. Strange they formed like long thin scratches but maybe with how thy are symmetrical on both screen sides its due to heat distribution in the dock...who knows!

is anyone still using the CableCreations Extension Cable?
does your USB devices (Pro Controller, LAN Adapter) still charge/work when plugged to the dock?

I ended up using the smallest of these. Found the pack in a local Poundland store (UK).

Put two on each inner 'rail'. One near the top and one at the bottom. They have a really soft finish so won't cause any screen wear issues.

this seems like a good solution but won't the felt pads end up catching on dirt/etc and still scratch the device? :/

been looking around trying to find this and/or the moleskin

There's a super quick fix that just needs tape and one of the small bags that came with the switch. Put the tape on the outside of dock with just a bit of tape on the inside.so the tape itself won't scratch the screen. I believe I used the bag that the switch itself came in.

Not the most elegant solution. But it does the job and is "free".

Had my Switch for a few months and haven't had any problems with scratching but admittedly I'm being very gentle with it. I bought a screen protector on day one.

I have found that the rubber pads inside the dock seem to leave a residue on the lower part of the screen's bezzle though. I tend to clean it pretty regularly.

All in all the dock is the worst part of the Switch. I really don't know what they we're thinking other than trying to cut manufacturing costs.

hmm are you gonna wrap the back part as well? seems like the rubber grooves on the back may also scuff the back of the Switch too

Had it since launch, no screen protector or anything, no scratches that I can see

I hate any of my devices with any sort of screen protector. The imperfections bother me too much

But the dock has done nothing, just been careful

I noticed the same thing! Glass screen protector since day 1 as well, no scratches but the bottom corners sometimes look like they have greasy fingerprints in rectangular shapes after undocking. No dock modifications.

This - never bothered with screen protectors - I look after my stuff and never had any problems.

I have made a modification to the dock though - moleskin - as this thread made me too scared not to.

All of my devices have a screen protector and I don't notice it, they never scratch, and I get maximum resale value.

The Switch dock scratching turned out to be a complete non-issue.

Ironically enough after going without a screen protector for all this time, no scratches from the dock, but my kids were a bit rough and dropped and now theres a scratch next to the screen lol. Thankfully not noticable really, but still think the dock scratching thing is pure hyperbole

Yeah this doesn't make sense to blame on the dock and I think Nintendo will probably say the same, the dock sliding would be straight lines doing up and down, not diagonally across. Seems like user error trying to blame a common issue.

Can you dock the switch by using an extension cable or anything (instead of putting it into the dock itself)? Or is there maybe a "frontless" dock?

I kind of want a Switch but I'm a little paranoid about scratching the display (and I don't like screen protectors).

My brother's glass screen protector was scratched by dust in the dock. Because the problem isn't the material of the screen, it's the design of the dock.

Then he got a scam protector that isn't really 9H at dust is 7H as most and can not scratch anything above it's hardness scale.

So the dock has scratched my switch screen

A lot of dust, most dust is like sand, very hard(7H), will scratch 3H plastic screens like the one Switch has within seconds. You should take more care of your system or at least put a glass protector on it.

I get annoyed every time I see this thread, because of the title. It's so very misleading. This only affects a small minority of people because their dock is not straight. There is no inevitability about it.

Yup. Buy a USB C extension cable and run it from the dock to the Switch.

You and me both man, the fact not a single mod felt like editing that hyperbolic to the max title yet is really strange.

Honestly, I would have thought that people getting the Switch would have thought about getting a screen protector almost immediately when they got the system. Still, it is nice to see a few of these ideas so that it won't get scratched up "as much" as opposed to doing nothing at all.

Wonder what the chances will be in the future that Nintendo will release "Updated Docks" that might address certain issues?

I didn't know about this. I'll have to wait a little bit before buying one because I need to save some money for other non gaming purposes but I'll definitely try this.

Also, what's up with people wanting to silence others for voicing their concern about this issue? As an owner of a slightly bent dock I approve the existence of this thread.

OMG at that poundland dock solution. Considered a dock protector myself but then just ordered 2x tempered glass screen protectors off ebay, applied one immediately, zero worry. If you really want to cheap on it, buy an adhesive felt sheet for £1 at hobbycraft.
