In a gif, scariest scenes in horror films (spoilers)

Fantastical

Death Prophet
The Blair Witch Project (1999)

God I love that movie.

Someone posted the part like 20 seconds after this but this is worse

Halloween
While The Strangers really annoys me due to a few moments, I love its Halloween-esque horror of seeing things before the characters know about them. That's tension and suspense done right. In Halloween, you're always seeing Michael lurking before the character do,

Signs

I didn't even like the movie but that scene almost gave me a heart attack.

Fuck. I can't second this enough - scares do nothing for me, but this scene? The news report lead in, everything. Mother of moses, to this day the worst scare I've got from a movie. Chills

Damn, I really need to watch Salem's Lot, or read the book.

Yeah, I was thinking about that scene with
the angel approaching. You don't get to see anything but the shadow and the sound of stone being dragged across the floor. Really unnerving.
Also that other scene when he drops the fork. Love that kind of stuff in horror movies.

I haven't seen the Salem's Lot film, but I did read the book and it is super disappointing watch the film instead maybe.

Also that Insidious demon appearance scene feels like SUCH a rip of Mulholland Drive - right down to the pacing and tone of the audio.

Don't know what scene this is but fun fact for the day: The Insidious nun is the mulholland dr. dirty hobo.

Holy crap, can't believe I forgot about Jacob's Ladder. Movie is amazing.

^
Is that the origin of the "twitchy" head trope?

Pretty sure it is...first time I can remember, anyway. Also the inspiration for Silent Hill. In fact, its' a better Silent Hill movie than Silent Hill

I couldn't find a gif, but I enjoyed The Birch. It's a horror short I saw at a horror festival.

Edit: actually, here's the whole short: https://youtu.be/SxQj0DumF8Y

Excellent makeup effects there. There's a lot of good horror shorts on YouTube. One of my favourites is The Outer Darkness, although sadly there's no sign of part 2 yet.

Pougkeepsie tapes, truly unsettling.

tumblr_mpw8j0Ab2B1r35403o1_500.gif

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is some eerie fucking shit.
*edit - beaten to death but I'm keeping it anyways because it really deserves it

One of my favorite horror films of all time and this scene is the least chilling. Such an incredible exercise in tension and build up.

I should watch this and Begotten. Seen so much about them but never actually watched them.

Not really a horror, but this scene from Communion spooked the hell out of me as a kid.

Yeah, this got me in a way not many movies did.

Didn't read through the whole thread, but American Werewolf in London has a scene where he is running naked through the woods and there is a curtain and pulls it back and then a jump scare. This haunts me to this day for some reason, but I now love the movie.

Edit: yep it is here:
also this one from American Werewolf forest scene creeped me out

Insidious.

Oh-Fun-Doesnt-Stop.gif

First one is from Mama, the feature film.

It's better in the short, imho:

That gif appears to be from a trailer. It's not like that in the film itself (the flicker).

These GIF's sum up why I hate most modern horror. I hate the influence The Ring had, and these quick moving long haired creatures are just dumb.

The Insidious gif just make me think a member of Mudvayne is going to surprise someone.

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
Insidious was a laughably unscary movie you guys are nuts. Shit looked like a Tenacious D music video at times.

Man, that's the only good part of the movie and I watched it solely based on that gif. The rest of it is just pretty boring and the characters are all so annoying. If that gif piques anyone's interest, by all means watch it, but you've seen the best part in that one gif.

Yeah. I started watching and got bored after 30 minutes. Never finished it. Didn't even know this was in the movie.

Just driving by to say The Strangers is a garbage movie and none of you should get fooled into watching it because of the gif someone posted.

It's basically one hour of retarded people wearing silly masks peeking behind the main characters only to magically disappear when they turn around.

That not to mention the insufferably predictable main character and her insufferably predictable action that the director thought was going to be shocking but was stupidly "I'm done with this trash movie" obvious from the beginning.

A complete waste of time.

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!

Sinister. The whole Bagul thing and his methodology is lame, but those snuff videos are creepy as fuck. And the music is otherworldly and excellent.

loved The Ring...funny thing about Ring 2.

I watched it shortly after it came out, but then years later not only had I forgotten I watched it, I completely forgot it existed.

Psycho (this scene used to have me shook as a kid)
tumblr_luzsphmcym1qh4qd1o1_500.gif

This and that Exorcist 3 scene aren't done enough justice through their GIFs. The music accompaniment is what really sells both of those

Speaking of which

I actually do find this scene in the original Phantom of the Opera to be extremely unnerving.

They require a lot more context than a gif can show, but Fire Walk With Me is a very haunting film.

The final scenes are something else, sure.

btw is funny, David Lynch is not an horror-movie director but for some reason it's a master to create uncomfortable and/or creepy scenes.
