iPhone X | OT | November 3

Fringe scenario? Ok, cool, so what's my workaround? I can tell you right now this isn't a big issue with TouchID as it currently operates.

You turn off the requirement of having your eyes focused on the screen and let your friend point your phone at your face.

??? Any reasonable 4K tv can do reverse 3:2 pull down to get true 24p from a 60hz signal.

Eh, it varies widely. Even on better TVs.
Many won’t work when it comes from a 60p signal, some just from a 60i signal. Some both. Some neither.

A native 24hz signal is always best.
(Which a lot of cheaper boxes do)

It's a legitimate situation I run into more than a few times. If you want to handwave it away then why bother replying. Zeypher asked for a scenario and I gave them one.

I'm not specifically saying your one is fringe or not, it wasn't my intention. What I meant was that there are dozens, hundreds, thousands, whatever scenarios that any one can come up with, some legitimate some not so. but just kind of listing them all is kind of asinine, because for each and every one you could probably come up with some equally asinine workaround.

It's just a pointless and meaningless exercise when people personally find their own solution, yes, sometime it's stupid and clumsy, but life goes on. You either find a way, or you stop doing it, you don't use the feature,or if the issue is so insurmountable, you just don't get that phone any more.

It's like the headphone jack. Doesn't matter whatever scenario you want ("i want to listen to MY headphones, while I charge!"), how legitimate it was for you, or however many other people. The fact of the matter was the jack was removed, and you either use one of the workarounds, or you don't. If it turns out to be a huge problem for a majority of people, then, it will reflect in sales, and Apple may turn around.

So you can no longer unlock your phone using your thumb to give to a co-pilot. It's a valid situation, I've done it myself often. But is it really that big a deal? if it is then you just either unlock your phone first, or turn off the features if you think you'll require the need.

Graceful shutdown is now an option in Settings.app. Which makes sense because it's not something you're supposed to need to use every day or even every week.

If you need to do a hard reset, like for example if the iPhone or its touchscreen becomes unresponsive, that's where you use power + volume down and hold for awhile. This is the equivalent of holding the power button on your PC until it just shuts off.

What is ‘graceful shutdown’?

If you can’t power down from the side button, that just becomes a massive Siri button? That’s horrible.

This is the first footage where silver actually looks silver and not white... and now I’m tempted

Isn’t a lot of that footage from a mockup made from the various rumours - you can see the white front a few times. Nobody has an X in their hands yet so anything except shots from the Apple demo and hands on will be from a mockup.

What is ‘graceful shutdown’?

There are two kinds of shutdown:

1. Software based: The phone shuts down processes, saves and closes files, etc. This is the one where you see the "Slide to Turn Off" screen.

Old method: Hold down power button, then slide
New method:
Option 1: Settings.app > Shut Down > slide to shut down
Option 2: Kyoufu just mentioned this, but hold Volume Up + Power > slide to shut down

2. Hardware based: The "fuck it, just turn the phone off" method. Same as pulling the plug on your PC, basically. But sometimes you need this if the touchscreen, buttons, or iOS itself stops responding.

Same as current iPhones: Hold Volume Down + Power for awhile > phone turns off

At a glance it looks like the power button's main focus now is Siri + screen on/off, so that explains why they call it the "side button" now.

HDMI 2.1 and VRR might solve this in a future version of Apple TV. I guess it depends if Apple would bother and it's possibly to do a smooth transition to 60Hz output whenever the interface is brought into view.

Some of us are watching content at 25/30/50/60 fps and have to choose between two outputs of 50/60Hz. A variable refresh rate would also be a great solution to streaming devices.

...hate me...
Does any hands-on highlight how different (and better, hopefully) it handles than a iPhone Plus?

7mm narrower. If it feels about like a regular sized iPhone (which is still 3mm narrower than the X) then it’s great.

How is anyone feeling about Apple's Leather Folio for the iPhone X?

That's a first. In a way it feels wrong. Weird to take pictures with, hard to put on a car holder, etc. On the other hand it's more complete protection, it's official, it can double as a wallet.

Anyone inclined to it?

Yeah. I think it's gorgeous, especially in the blue. I worry I'll feel like an old man with it - I AM ONLY 37 GODDAMNIT - but it's a lovely case.

I'm glad Apple is releasing the iPhone X, should make it easier for me to buy an iPhone 8 lol.

iPhone 7 was a lot better than previous years and it seems to be continuing the trend this time around. Most retailers here are still saying on or near launch with preorders. 6 and 6S were gone within the hour.

I don't think that's how it works. The majority of Apple users will still go for the iPhone 8 models. The X is a premium model that most people can't afford.

Seeing as the shipping times for the 8 are still only at 1-2 weeks, 4 days after pre-orders opened it looks like the majority are waiting for the X. The 27th October is going to be a bloodbath.

I honestly don’t understand the hate the X is getting.
Apple is exactly where I’ve wanted them to be for a while, an Apple TV4 with A10X, Watch, EarPods, HomePod and X will be the perfect hardware when it’s all released for me.
I can’t wait to have it all connected to iCloud and working together.
Even watching my son do his homework on an iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard on iOS 11 is so much easier that a Windows laptop.

It's not that much more then the 8. You mean the 7?

I can't imagine what Apples Q will look like. Jesus.

Yeah ... no.

The iPhone X is $300 more expensive than the iPhone 8. Most people still buy their iPhones subsidized via their character or via some other payment plan.
I suppose it's like $15 a month extra for the X over the 8 if you spread it over 2 years.

The iPhone X will sell like crazy.

iPhone 8 is going to do well among the walk into the store and buy whatever iPhone they tell me crowd. That's the majority of people.

But the people who are feverishly preordering? The ones watching the keynote? The ones standing in line? They want X to give it to 'em. And it's still a big audience. That phone is going to be a beast and the real supply constrained one. The price is not that big of a deal for people like that, especially when they see it as a weekly/monthly payment.

Yeah, remember those "the iPhone 7 is underwhelming, i'm gonna hold out for the rumored 10 year anniversary phone", 1 year ago?

I personally didn't really believe in those rumors - but there's plenty of people who've been sitting on a comfortable budget just waiting for this new phone to be released, for over a year now.

Eventually it'll all be wireless and there won't even be a lightning port on the iPhone, and that will be the next big controversy. Maybe not next year, maybe not even the year after that, but eventually and probably sooner than later.
I just hope they don't do this until Qi and other wireless charging things are ubiquitous. Also, I want wireless charging that can do it from at least 3-5 feet away. That's my dream. Then get it to 15 feet. One charger in the middle of my room to charge everything I have would be amazing. (Especially once the tech makes it into the MacBooks too.)

Also introduce iTunes in the Cloud complete with smart playlist editing and live updating right from your iPhone/iPad and I'll never have to connect my iPhone to my computer again. (Technically I don't have to now, but I've found WiFi syncing to be flakey at best with it sometimes failing and also you still have to actually launch iTunes just to sync. This stuff should happen in the cloud and trickle down if you ask me.)

There is no way this is the case. People who couldn't afford the old model bought it anyway.

The X's premium over the 8 is not that big anyway.

for notifications, I wonder if they will have a way to check for your attention when a notification appears, and keep the screen on while you're looking at it. Sometimes it will lock again quite quickly so that could be convenient.

Also thinking about durability - will stainless steel be more prone to scratching than the aluminium of the iphone 6/7/8? If so, would the silver be a better option as you should be able to (carefully) polish it out, but not on the space grey

To be honest, if I didn't have my 7+ and still had my 5C and had to make my decision to upgrade now instead of back in April, I'd probably take the 8+ instead. Mainly because A) the X is just a smaller phone right now. There's no Plus version. Hopefully there will be with next years model and B) the X is obviously going to have some growing pains with its new UI paradigms. FaceID will take time to become accepted, apps will need to be updated to not completely get screwed over by the new screen shape, people need to get used to the notch, the price needs to come down a bit when the technology becomes more widely available. I'd get an 8+ and I'd be happy with it. I really do like its look, even though I'd be hiding it away in a case so what's the point of the shiny glass back if I can't even see it anyway.

Don't bother arguing this point here. Just agree to disagree for now then wait for the quarterly sales reports to be released.

The majority of iPhones sold will be 8s regardless of demand, they can't make nearly enough X. The sales aren't going to say anything else. Same thing happened with the Plus back when.

The car faceid scenario sounds legit. My friends pass me their phone all of the time to change music or navigate. Having to do FaceID might be an issue unless it can catch them at an angle. I hope there's a mode where you can keep the phone unlocked while it's connected to your car or going over 10mph etc

Why not just use Siri when you're driving? I do it all the time.

Idk man, a quick look at my Facebook shows a lot of people who can't afford the Cost waiting for it, hell it was too rich for my blood and apparently I make way more than the majority of my peers.

You can still use the passcode.

Any protips on pulling off a 3am ET pre-order with apple? I think I'm going to do the upgrade plan for the first time (not trading in my current phone).

Set an alarm.

From what I hear using the app is better than the website. This is going to be my first time doing 3am EST as well.

Yeah using the App is simpler, especially if you use Apple Pay because it's essentially a few taps as long as all your information (card & address details) is up to date on your Apple ID.

Can confirm, the app is insanely quick and easy. If the 8 launch was any indication, they also seem to prioritize updating the app first.

How do you set up Apple Pay? I have Apple Pay set up generally but in the Apple Store app it asked me for my card security number

First time purchase will ask for the card verification code, shouldn't be required after that on the same device.

Hold the fuck up. 27th October is also Super Mario Odyssey launch day.

That day is gonna be so hectic. And I'm on a training course for work that day.

October 27th is fucking silly. Super Mario, Assassin's Creed, Wolfenstein 2, iPhone pre-order, Stranger Things season 2, and the cherry on top? Jigsaw!

It's too bad my credit card doesn't seem to support Apple Pay. :/ How much longer is the process without Apple Pay if you already have your CC on file?

If it's saved in the app it just asks for your CVV code from the back of the card. So not long at all
