‘Watchmen’ HBO Adaptation From Damon Lindelof Officially A Go With Pilot

& Backup Script Order

It is true — HBO has given a formal pilot green light to Watchmen and has ordered backup scripts for the project, Damon Lindelof's followup to his praised HBO drama series The Leftovers.

Lindelof alluded to the pickup yesterday with an Instagram post captioned ”Day One" and a picture of Watchmen‘s writers room, which opened Tuesday. Warner Bros. TV, which also was behind The Leftovers, is the studio as part of Lindelof's overall deal there.

I'm worried that Lindelof is biting off more than he can chew, but after the greatness that was The Leftovers, I'm in for the first few episodes at the minimum.

I watched The Leftover's first season. Should I pick it up again?

Difficult question to answer - personally, I don't see how you could make it through the entire first season and not have the desire to watch the second. Did you figure it all for just some more Lost smoke monsters?

Absolutely. The first season is pretty divisive. Season 2 and 3 are some of my favorite television.

One particular episode in Season 2 though... GOAT status.

If it was anyone else I'd be against it. But I need to see Lindelof's vision of Watchmen. It is a thing I need.

I'm interested.

Ever since I can remember people wanting an adaptation of Watchmen, all anyone's asked for is an HBO mini-series.

So now there's an HBO mini-series.

That it's Damon Lindelof showrunning doesn't really throw me off because Damon Lindelof's track record as a showrunner is pretty fuckin' good, considering. I know the automatic, knee-jerk fan narrative/meme says he's to be blamed for every negative thing about genre storytelling, but eh.

If fuckin Solid Snake and the guy who made the fuckin Owl movie got to take a crack at it in film form and it turned out alright , (btw, many fans/readers had mostly positive thoughts about it from 09-10, especially once that Director's Cut dropped) and if DC itself can't keep from constantly fucking with it, to the point they're folding it into the legitimate DC Universe (ugh) then I can keep my mind open to see what happens when the dream of the late 90s comes alive on HBO.

It's great to see how well received The Leftovers is here on GAF. Third season was undoubtedly the best thing I saw on TV since True Detective.

Great writer. Watchmen is also great so I'm hyped af for this.

So what do we imagine the production timeline looking like? If they're ordering the pilot now, maybe a 1.5-year turnaround, with a premiere in early or mid-2019, between Game of Thrones S8 and Westworld S3?

I'm really curious as to whether the costumes are going to lean more towards the modern design aesthetic, or if they're going to try and make them look like 70s/80s styled superhero costumes, and the felt/cotton ones from the flashback sequences.

Humm, sounds like I will watch leftovers next. I have skipped it so far since it sounded kinda rapture-like in the description. That cage movie soured me on those plot lines. :\

On topic, I wouldn't say no to more watchmen.

I can't imagine how heavy handed and labrious this will be. I bet the Comedian and Original Silk Spectre stuff will be handled with care and thoughtfulness

The recent Rebirth teases have shown Veidt in his comic costume instead of the movie one.

Yeah, because Moore was so subtle.

I mean, the owlship ejaculating fire during a sex-scene was his idea.

I'll watch it if only out of morbid curiosity to see how it tries to differentiate itself visually from the Snyder adaptation. Will it be set in the 80s or in the present I wonder.

I really would like it to be set in present day. A lot could be done with that concept with the republican party the way its going now and people's relationship with authority being more strained than ever.

like we already got the movie which took so much from the page. which was okay, some of the casting choices were shit but as an adaptation of the comic it worked for the most part imo.

I'm interested as long as he he has an actual plan on the structure of the show and episodes. I think with the right level of groundwork, we could finally get an excellent live-action version of the The Watchmen. I liked the Zack Snyder film, though some of the concessions made to turn the comic into a film were a bit much.

The issue with bringing up LOST is that it was a completely different show forced to deal with the constraints of being on network tv and based on a JJ Abrams concept. It's a strong character show weighed down by the millions of mysteries introduced during season 1 and the need to try and solve them once they were renewed.

I consider Lindelof to be a straight up terrorist.

The man has stolen countless hours from geeks, with waste of times like Lost and the even more preposterous The Leftovers. Ruining movies like Prometheus doesn't help either.

And now he's just going to retread this tired old ground? The man's a psychopath. Maniacally obsessed with mediocrity and making people waste countless number of hours of their lives.

Alien squid is on the menu tonight baby! It's a perfect graphic novel but I'd be interested in his take on the source material.
