Square Enix: Nier way above expectations, will be significant franchise going forward

"Nier was a major success! We will continue to improve on this success by not patching the PC version!"

This. I'm glad the NieR franchise is a success and would love more entries but for Pete's sake, fix your damn products. You know by fixing your products it will equate to....more sales, Squeenix?? Mind boggling, I know.

What a time to be alive. A few years ago a sequel seemed completely impossible, now it's a big franchise. Crazy how things change. This makes me really happy.

Looks like Nier is to Square-Enix as Fire Emblem is to Nintendo. Two niche franchises that had major breakout titles (Automata and Awakening) that turned them into pillars for their respective companies.

Let's hope the money doesn't do to Yoko Taro what it did with Hideo Kojima and unleash every fetish on his female character designs with no restraint.

Perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.

Too late

Nier Automata is awesome. I hope with their grand goals to scale the franchise up, they don't also bring with it insane and unreasonable expectations. Nier Automata was successful because it seems like the budget and financial expectations were set to a fairly attainable goal.

Not sure how I feel about that. The success is great, but the major franchise part... yeah, I'm not entirely sold on either a AAA Yoko Taro game or the idea of him not being able to come up with some other weird new IP that is somehow tied to the universe, but having to keep making Nier games.

Oh boy, I can't wait til Nier 15 comes out and everyone is like "Nier is dead" or "Nier 1 was the best"

I jest, great job yoko and platnum

Seeing as Automata was actually more restrained in that regard than Drakengard 3 and the original Nier...

You joke but I dont see it that rare, that or forcing YT to make something that he may not want with the IP.

The Drakengard 2 thing as well as the multiple rejected pitches for Drakengard 3 do show precedent for misuse of the IP or excessive corporate control which could develop into something worrying now that the series is seen as profitable.

Let's hope they dont fuck up with the Nier franchise, they already did a lot of damage to Thief, Deus Ex, and FF XV was so disappointing imo.

At least Hitman and IO are Free now.

next up would likely be a Nier remaster. Include Gestalt and Replicant, tweak the camera, watch the money flow in.

If I were calling the shots, if I were looking for an easy payday, if I were looking to nurture Nier as a long term brand, that's what I'd do.

Again, on one hand I am very happy for Yoko Taro and Platinum.

On the other hand, it is incredibly likely that S-E will fuck this up.

Happy to see Square Enix doing well. Seems SE is very happy with XV's mega success and happy Nier went over expectations. Seems both games exceeded what they expected. :)

Who said anything about a AAA budget?

I dont understand why some of the posts in this thread is just assuming that Taro is inexplicably going to leave Nier or that SE is going to screw it up somehow. This is tremendously good news, there's literally nothing to be upset about.

I don't think a Gestalt remaster is ever happening. Too much effort.

In a weird way, I’d be interested in seeing what a Nier game from a resentful Yoko Taro would be.

You mean Drakengard 1?

GIven how different Automata already is to OG Nier i don't see that as much of a risk unless SE actively starts meddling with the creative direction.

In the worst case, he'll be making a game called "Nier: Drakengard" or "Nier: Saltmonster adventures".
