I don’t buy the article saying they aren’t in final production. But I do think the pre-orders will be a bloodbath.

And it's being deployed worldwide on the same date lol.

On the other hand why would Apple do such a worldwide launch if they weren't confident in the supply. IDK.

Maybe they'll pull an Apple Watch and delay it in some places IIRC? It was either that or stock lasted 5 minutes and then was off for weeks or months.

iPhone 7 Jet Black shows they like the “in stock for 5 minutes and then restock in a month” approach when they don’t have enough of something

Could they do a dramatic last moment cut back of launch countries? Can’t see it - surely if there were internal worries about supply they’d have launched in the usual handful of primary markets and pushe the rest to a tier 2

Sounds about right.

I feel the same way but maybe they're not too afraid to spread the stock thin. Either that or they didn't anticipate as much demand for the X in spite of the 8 - although, that's just highly speculative talk from enthusiasts at this time.

It does feel good not being pushed to a tier 2 or 3 country as with other not so distant launches 😊

My guess is instead of true tier delays they’ll just thin out the stock allotted to non-USA countries for launch day. USA is their strongest market share and will likely get some other countries’ Day one allotments shifted to there if stock is thinner than needed. So my guess is that some countries will maybe lose a little stock at worst and they’ll simply show later shipping dates a little sooner than anticipated because there’s only going to be a few minutes of day one stock.

I doubt Apple cuts any of the countries completely from launch day with a public delay. A behind the scenes lowering of stock for less essential launch day locations is more likely.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

Yep, 100% agreed. Everyone anticipates this being a PITA to get at launch. If it sells out in 3 minutes instead of 5, that's just good PR. Why take the PR hit by removing a country completely?

As for next year, I agree - I think we'll see no numbers. Samsung has taken some iffy steps to get to "8", and now the "Ten" makes little sense once we're past the 10th Anniversary.

I think iPhone and iPhone Pro make a lot of sense. Especially if the screen sizes shift and an "inbetween" like the X ceases to exisit. Basically "transition" the regular and the Plus to the regular and Pro, both with bigger screens and no bezels.

I mean there's been supply issues for every iPhone in some capacity. There's some expectation people will miss out on launch. 6 Plus was rough. The black iPhone 7s.

As long as I'm able to put an order in that's all I care about. I had to wait a month to get my order for the 6 Plus, I don't mind waiting.

I wonder which model will be more popular. With the way the upgrade program works it seems like you pick which model you want first to go through the process. I’d rather just pick whichever one I have a better chance of getting.

Order I'll be going in:

White X 256
Black X 256
White X 64
Black X 64

Ideally, I'd love for them to offer carrier unlocked at full price; but I'll happily just order an AT&T model if not.

I was dead-set on the Space Gray/Black X when they were first announced and pics went up on Apple's site. But after seeing a bunch of hands-on impressions, the white/silver is definitely the model to get, IMO.

So the silver isn’t silver, it’s white?

I’m going 64GB silver. Hopefully everyone else goes black.
Back looks white in all images so far despite them saying silver. If it were actually silver I’d be interested but I’m not convinced it looks silver. Looks like only the rim is silver truly.

I feel like the color only really describes the trim around the phone. The space gray looks black in almost every video I've seen.

The silver and space gray monikers refer to the stainless steel rim finish around the phone.

The backs are white and black respectivelly.

Honestly prefer the white back, if just for the fact we haven’t had a white back iPhone since the iPhone 4S.

Take a look at MKBHD's impression's video - and make sure to bump the resolution up to 4K: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HTXMhKWqnA

At a 1:40 he flips to the silver X.

I noticed the space grey tends to show fingerprints a lot easier on the back than the silver/white does.

The white back is okay, not great, but it's fine. I've had so many white iPhones in the past that I'm a bit over it. I would have preferred the taupe option of the 8 with the silver steel trim. I think for a thousand bucks we deserve more than two color options...

Yep. Just like the Apple Watch has now a darker SS version (although in the AW it’s actually called space black).

Are you positive?

But damn, if you're sure- that has me torn.

I find the SS on the white model really gaudy, but I like the white back with black front...hmmm

I think for the next year there will be no more regular iphones, just iphone x in 2 different sizes. After using phone with such a small bezel its hard to go back to the regular phone.

purely subjectively, purely aesthetically :

silver
+ matches my SS AW
+ white back looks great and finally with black front
+ SS band should polish out minor scratches
- a little blingy?

space grey
+ black just looks good as always
- a little conservative if you've had space grey before?
- space grey SS may not be able to polish out scratches if its like the AW equivalent.

Leaning towards the silver, but have both 64GB set up as favourites in the apple store app. Going to buy outright - have a 3 year 0% credit card offer that I always ignore so will set that up with monthly payments to pay it off in 2 years

mrklaw

MrArseFace
also if its a flat glass back, would it make it easier to get coloured tempered glass covers to change the look? That could apply to the iphone 8 too - could have a white back and black front finally..

mrklaw

MrArseFace
Isn't that what the silver X already looks like?

yeah but you could have a gold back on the X, or red or whatever you want. I mentioned the 8 because the whole 'anything other than black gets a white front' really got tiresome.

- has anyone got a feel in their head for what they do if they can't get an X soon after launch? If its looking like January - will you sit it out with what you have and wait on an X2, jump on an 8, try a Galaxy S8?

Damnit. Hear rumbling that there won't be a sim free X at launch. I was planning on paying full price for 2x 256GB. Looking likes, I have to go with current provider ATT version or wait months later for sim free. This sucks.

I’m looking to join the IUP in the UK so it looks like I’ll be forced to wait until my local store gets one on stock.
The reality is that it’ll probably be 2018 which has me thinking of jumping on the IUP now with a 8 Plus and getting next years phone which will probably be the next iteration of the X.

That’s not a rumbling, there’s never a SIM free iPhone model at launch. Only exception is the current 8’s and the SE

Yeah. For example without even looking at the back you can be pretty sure this is the space gray:

And a more sideways angle:

Really not the regular SS silver chrome.

You make a good point about the gaudiness but eh. Really love that white back. The chrome should look fairly normal after a while.

The space grey is definitely the more sedate option, but I don't think it shows off the curves of the X as well. I also don't think the chrome will look gaudy. I mean the SS watch doesn't look gaudy and that's basically the same material.

Given the alleged supply constraints, Apple likely doesn't want to make it easy for people to flip them. Probably the only reason they are allowing it on the 8 is because they knew the demand wasn't going to be as high.

Are you sure? I could've sworn I bought my last few iPhones sim free at launch.

Edit:

Just checked the receipt for my 7+ and it at least looks like it was sim free.

You can pay for the phone full price on a carrier and it’s not necessarily SIM-free. Was it activated at all or did you have to manually move a SIM to it?

October 13th, roughly a month after launch

Same with the 6s

iPhone 6 wasn’t until January

I guess I must have bought the T-Mobile version but I'm pretty sure it didn't require an account and it was full priced as well as unlocked.

Yes, T-Mobile phones are the exception. You can buy those unlocked and full price without activating them like the other carriers. However they aren’t ACTUALLY unlocked because they don’t have the radios to work with Verizon or Sprint

They're unlocked they just don't work on CDMA networks which may or may not be a big deal depending on what you plan on doing with the phone.
