New Zealand general Election 2017 thread - If you don't vote then zip it, sweetie

I evidently posted the one in 2014 on the day so I thought I would post this one earlier so more people get a chance to see it.

Election day is Saturday 23rd September 2017.

You still have until Friday to enroll which can be done Online or you can go into an advance voting place which can be located Here

If you are overseas you are still able to vote and information on this is available here

If you don't know who to vote for then some good, easy resources are

  1. On The fence
  2. TVNZ Vote Compass
I also like the Spinoff's policy page which is super in depth.

Results on the day can be found on the official website Election Results

Finally if you know anyone aged between 18 - 30, suggest they enroll and vote, they don't tend to but they should have their thoughts and choices heard too and the best way is to vote.

What's the environment looking like? I feel like Key/English have been running your country forever.

I am hoping personally it'll go towards change, yes our economy is good but everything else is fucked.

They have done nothing substantial about climate change, we have record levels of homelessness, the health system is underfunded despite what they'll say, mental health is an actual crisis, house prices are out of control and again nothing has been done to stem this and the thing that upsets me the most is the horrific levels of child poverty we have nowadays.

Polls are looking like our major liberal party, Labour, will win, but because we use Mmp, they'll need to form a coalition with the smaller parties to actually form a government. That's the slightly scary part. Because of the uncertainty of the Green party (our far left party), we might get the most liberal government we've ever had, or if the Greens don't get enough votes, Labour will be forced to make agreements with our most right leaning party, New Zealand First.

New Zealand First could potentially decide who becomes Prime Minister, that would give them a tremendous amount of power.

That's why I have been trying to encourage people to party vote Green and candidate vote Labour. 40% of the party vote gets Labour 5 seats whereas 6% of the vote gives the Greens 7 seats. So you're way better off party voting them.

On the fence tells me my best match is National even though I split my vote between the greens and labour ...

Might be a bit off on its recommendations or each question is not weighted evenly, for other people using it as guide.

I voted Tuesday last week. I also encouraged my flatmate to vote, which he ended up doing this week. I'm not sure it was solely because of me but it's great either way.

What type of voting do you guys have, instant runoff or first past the post?

Our election system is mixed-member proportional (like Germany).

We have two votes: a vote for our local member of parliament (MP), which is first past the post, and a party vote, which defines the composition of the House of Representatives (i.e. if a party gets 50% of the party vote they'll get roughtly 50% of the seats in the house). The only caveat is that to be represented in parliament a party needs to win at least 1 local election or get more than 5% of the party votes. Otherwise, all votes for that party are wasted.

That's why I have been trying to encourage people to party vote Green and candidate vote Labour. 40% of the party vote gets Labour 5 seats whereas 6% of the vote gives the Greens 7 seats. So you're way better off party voting them.

Yeah that's what both my flatmate and I did.

What site has the Poll of Polls or whatever it's called? I've been trying to remember. Last I recall Labour and Nationals were neck and neck in that. Wonder how this poll has changed it.

I will be immensely happy if National are kicked to the curb.

I got my mother a labour supporter through and through to do the same, We're both still pissed we needed to vote for the greens instead of Labour tbh.

Humm, kinda thought since it has been mentioned a few times that New Zealand had problem with people voting but after googling it seems to be at around 80% mostly?

Voting percentages of course always can be better but it is not that low either. Reminding people to vote is never bad obviously.

Both Stuff and Radio New Zealand have one. Stuff's is better, since they update it quicker, give you the trend line over time, and make it easier to find.

Big queue at uni today when I went past to vote. Gonna do it tomorrow, party vote green baby.

Yip, I've been genuinely surprised everytime I walk past the link at Otago Uni. The US polls failed to predict the election, as did the UK polls. I'm hoping for something similar, along with high youth turn out like the UK saw.

I bloody well hope so! Would be pretty uplifting to see. It's my first time able to vote in a national election and I'm not going to pass it by.

I think it basically comes down to youth turnout. They have two more days to get out and vote.
Fwiw there was a queue today as well, longer than yesterday around the same time too. I'm asking everyone I know that I bump into if they voted, just now talked a guy into voting. If I had a dollar every time someone said one vote won't change anything smh.

also,
You hear Eminem's "Lose Yourself" or a song closely resembling it
DEAD

LOL!

PS. Ideas for a costume for me for an election party tomorrow night?

I'm thinking I'll find an orange onesie at Look Sharp and go as Orange Guy. But if they don't have an orange onesie I'm lost..

Here's a quick and dirty primer just for my own amusement.

Bill English, National Party - Prime Minister since John Key's shock resignation in December 2016. National have lead a coalition government since 2008.

JXDHYPf.png

Jacinda Ardern, Labour Party leader since Andrew Little's shock resignation in July (I think?) - since then Labour has surged in the polls and could possibly hit Bill right in the English.

hguHMyY.png

James Shaw, sole Green Party leader since co-leader Metiria Turei's shock resignation in August. Labour's rise in the polls has been at the expense of the Greens, will they make it into Parliament?

3wPGjSx.png

Winston Peters, NZ First leader since forever. Was kingmaker in 1996 and looks to be that way again in 2017. Will he side with Labour or National?

dvrwkNN.png

David Seymour, ACT Party leader since whenever. What is the point of ACT anyway?

fWGo1pL.jpg

Marama Fox and Te Ururoa Flavell, Māori Party - have been in coalition with National for a few years. Might swing to Labour?

fNlSHtG.png

Gareth Morgan, The Opportunities Party - political newcomer this year. Is infamous for wanting to wipe out all cats to stop them killing our native birds. (might be a slight exaggeration)

My Election Prediction:

National 45%
Labour 37%
Green 6%
NZ First 7%

Government = National + NZ First

God I hope I'm wrong

A reporter on TV one described National's "strong and stable" approach lol. Can't tell if shots fired.

Really hope Labour+Greens pull through 😧

Did my votes double tick Labour. Will buy some Indian lagers for my attendance foreither the victory or sad sack party .

Victory for Democracy on the day and all that.

Today's the day! I'm going to be home all day writing an essay, what are your plans?

Eat, drink, play games and watch this country sell its soul to the devil.

edit - my voting station is literally across the road in a rock club, so that was quick and easy. Hopefully Christchurch Central swings again.

Always fun to watch election results roll in, even if it isn't your country. Is there anywhere where I can live stream the results and when would that be?

I don't know much about NZ politics but last time I was there, about a year and a half ago, it was abundantly clear that the housing situation was totally broken and needed addressing.

I’d guess rnz and of course tv3 And TVNZ will have live streams. First votes should be 2000 or 2030hr local time.
