We need to talk about Bojack Horseman

Fantastapotamus

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
Why do you not emphatize with the characters?

I guess the episode can look goofy to someone who doesn't pay attention to the characters (or who perceives crippling alcoholism and damaging drug abuse as fun and okay.)

I don't know really, I just don't.
I don't think they are badly written and it's not because they are animals, I just can't connect with them.

That last season is some of the favourite tv in years. I just loved what it did with parenthood across the board.

I would say that the first eight episodes are a slog to get through but like another poster said it's initially setting everything up for the later seasons. Season 2 was good but season 3 was clutch mode. The underwater silent episode is hands down the top tier episode of the show and what made me fall in love with it. Currently on S4 E4 and so far so good.

Absolutely love the show. I think it deserves all the praise it gets even if it's not everyone's cup of tea. Haven't seen anyone bring this up, but I also find Bojack to be oddly encouraging because the show stresses how much you DON'T want to be stuck in a self-destructive cycle like Bojack. Each season is like a reminder that the effort you put into reaching your goals, maintaining healthy relationships, and trying to be better than you were--it's all worth it. But you have to keep at it every day.

Bojack Horseman is an incredible depiction of depression that resonates with me completely. I remember before I watched it people talking about how awful a person Bojack is, and then the whole time I was watching it I kept thinking, "But I'm Bojack."

The depressed Diane episodes did hit way too close to home, though.

It's definitely one of the best shows to come out in the past decade. I had zero interest in it when it first came out, thought it looked stupid. But one day I was bored and ill and looking for something to watch on netflix, ended up binging all 3 seasons within a few days. Watched all of season 4 in one day when it came out.

I generally don't like Diane or Todd though. Come at me.

They're basically just less amped up horrible people. In comparison to Bojack they come off looking better, but I can't really think of anyone who I'd call "good" in the series.

Despite most people being sacks of shit, I've actually kept watching the show, which is an impressive feat considering usually if there's no one I care about I can't stay interested.

I would consider Princess Carolyn and Mr. Peanut Butter generally good people/animals.

It has one of the best single episodes about his depression, but yeah, the season is really about him growing as a person and reconnecting with family.
S4E6 I think is trying to convey that
he'll never be able to escape his depression, but the rest of the season shows that he can be a good person.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I mean, not for me I guess. Looked like they had a goofy drug episode.
Then again, I have a hard time emphasizing with any of the characters of the show, so maybe that's why.

I still like the show mind you, but that's because I like the humor.

People don't get into drug binges after getting intimate recovery because they're happy. I feel this was transparently obvious from well before the episode even happened. There is not being empathetic and not seeing what is right on front of your face.

But based on the character's personality, I don't think his celebrations were ever done out of malice. He may not have self-awareness, but he definitely just wants to celebrate anything and everything.

It's grating for sure, but my argument is based on how one defines being a "good" person.

I love it generally. The last season felt like it was being deliberately depressing. It was a surprisibg gutpunch last season, but I hope they don't rely too much on that aspect.

It's close to true greatness but I feel like a lot of its wackier stuff holds it back. Season 4 was the most consistent season yet but a lot of the stuff involving Todd fell really flat. The show handles the hard topics really well but fumbles in a lot of the smaller areas, it's frustrating at times.

Honestly, if they cut out the humor elements, it would be a damn good drama. Whoever made the analogy to Breaking Bad on-point. The way BoJack's life spirals down through season 3 is executed very well. I did not think a comedic cartoon could execute the way season three progresses and ends. You're sitting there waiting for the show to bounce back up to being happy after getting increasingly depressing after each episode, but they just let the season end with it lingering at what appears to be rock bottom. No redemption; no nice little bow to end the season. Just despair and a sliver of hope in the last few seconds.

The execution of season 3 bought a lot of goodwill from me. I'm only a couple episodes into season 4, but I'm extremely curious to see how the show progresses character arcs, which is typically something I couldn't care less about when it comes to comedic cartoons/sitcoms.

Without the humor the series will be terrible, you still need a contrast for all the hard moments that the series has. That way those moments have a bigger punch. If the series was only drama, it would get tiring really quick

The show couldn't work without comedy, or else it would just be the characters talking about their problems the whole time. You need the absurdism to let the heavier stuff digest better.

Can we also talk about how bojack quite possibly has the most fleshed out 'Talking animals living with humans' world in all media?

In Disney and Looney tunes you have talking animals alongside 'dumb' animals, usually eaten. And fish are pretty much never characters unless the whole setting takes place under water. But its never explained why..

Not Bojack.

Take a look at banner Michael

Okay, I only got 3 hours of sleep last night so maybe I'm being slow, but what does the banner have anything to do with what I was saying? The gag is great, but is it supposed to prove that Mr. PB is not a genuine person?

EDIT: oh now I get it. The other guy was making fun of me for giving Mr. PB's name a space. Damnit, I'll let myself out.

That's what I was pointing out, but not making fun. I've done the same myself because I automatically space it out like I normally would to write peanut butter. I wouldn't have mentioned it if the show didn't use it as a gag which I loved and wanted to share. They followed it up with this:

edit: I guess maybe i should spoiler that in case for some reason someone hasn't seen the show yet and decides to because of stuff in this thread. There are clearly people who gave up before this episode and should try again.

Mr. PB is definitely not a good person as the show alluded to many times that his behavior is some sort of learned coping mechanism.

He's very self-involved, but I can't recall him doing anything that I would say pegs him as being a bad person.

MMarston

Was getting caught part of your plan?
He's very self-involved, but I can't recall him doing anything that I would say pegs him as being a bad person.

He's not bad "bad" per se, but he is super needy to a huge fault, which eventually leads him nearly fucking everything up for everyone in Season 4.

I feel that, like Evangelion, to get the greatness of the series you need to understand/have lived a depresión in some kind of level to appreciate what the show is trying to do.

Isn't mandatory to enjoy the show, but it could really mark the difference on how you view the show

Wow at the polarizing opinions in this thread. I guess you can lead a horse to water but can't make them drink.

I just re-watched S1-3, finished S4 and I want to do it all over again. The show is incredible and often times hits at home for me

As someone who has suffered depression and continues to suffer it, I really appreciate what the show does with its characters and their relationships.

I really do like the show quite a bit, but I wouldn't put it up there as a masterpiece. I can't put my finger on it, but something stops it just short of greatness.

Oh yeah no worries, I was incredibly slow this morning. There were a couple of other ones that were even more hilarious like the
"is governor spelled with an e or an o"
in season 4.
