Star Trek: The Next Generation Turns 30 This Thursday

So today September 24th marks the 30th anniversary since it premiered with "Encounter at Farpoint"

I was 7 at the time and don't remember watching it premiere. I started watching around late season 2 (had to catch up to earlier episodes from repeats on my local station). What are your memories gaf?

For fun, here's a promo that aired the day of

Edit: I was wrong. I was off by 4 days. Sorry everybody.

Holy poop. Had no idea. What a kickoff for Discovery.

Happy birthday to one of my favorite shows ever. Maybe the most important show in my life overall due to how important it was to my dad and family as I was growing up.

I think the commercial is transfered from analogue tape -- there are several parts where the audio warps and I think that might be one of them even though it sounds like he is just doing a voice. I laughed too though.

The commercial brings back memories lol. My friend which lived behind me was obsessed with TNG and used to watch it everyday when it came on back then.

Data needs a fucking statue for how many times he's saved the Enterprise crew. Actually he could have done everyones job and the whole crew could have just chilled on the holodeck.

I liked the episode where everyone forgets who they are and Data assumes that androids are standard issue on every ship, and the amount of time Data saves their asses, they really should be

Troi has the easiest job ever. Entrusted with the mental health of over 1,000 people and she just hangs out on the bridge starring at the view screen for 7 years.

I used to watch this on the old Channel 11 on Sunday evenings, one respite before going to back to high school each week. I did have a big cup of Earl Grey for the show.

It sucking for a year and then slowly getting better.

I do wonder if Q wasn't in the first episode whether it would have gotten a second season. So much bad in S1.

Picard and Data were the only good regulars. Had some "best trek ever" contenders in "Measure of a Man" and "Q-Who". Only trek ever with a good series ending (though TOS would eventually get one through film with STVI).

Blu Rays are well worth getting, an *astonishing* amount of work went into these given that most of the effects were done on video, not on film. They look fantastic. Measure of a Man has an uncut 60min release too.

I grew up with this show and still regularly watch episodes. It will never ever get old.

Too bad they managed to make only one enjoyably (but dumb) movie out of it.

Wow. I vividly remember seeing that promo live, specifically Piccard stepping forward and introducing himself at the beginning. My family and I watched it regularly through the entire run, though I think I dropped off watching it during the last season.

I am old.

I remember seeing this episode live. We were all blown the fuck away. I still reference that line.

But Encounter at Farpoint first aired on the 28th of September, not the 24th? At least that's what multiple sources after a google search tell me.

Probably the most important show in my life, as you can see by my username! Got hooked on reruns when I was about 11, and it helped to get me through some lonely times at school.

Engage!

One of the very best and an important show for me too. It was always a joyous occasion to watch the latest adventure on air. I also remember buying magazines dedicated to the show like the official fan club and cinefantastique (they're episode guides were like treasures). Good times.

about to finish season 6 in my current TNG binge. What a time to have a whole season left, but at the same time only a whole season left.

The Next Generation was a big part of my life growing up. Was one of the only shows I was allowed to watch that wasn't a safe of religious program. Which is kinds funny. Picard was my role model.

Oddly enough, I identified with Worf the most. I was always too "black" for my white friends and too "white" for my black friends, so I had a hard time fitting in anywhere. The character kinda outlined my teenage and early 20's, growing as a person and becoming more comfortable with myself. Just trying to be the best me I can be.

One of my favorite shows of all time.

Such a great show. I wish it were still on TV (as in still creating new episodes). One of the all time greats.

Amazing! I thought I saw every episode, but just finished “Force of Nature”. If I saw it I have no memory of it. Amazing episode and cautionary tale for climate change.
