Outlander - Season 3 - Sundays on Starz

That continued drop in ratings for S2. Hopefully this one will be better. :p

I've always wondered how the increase in streaming these days does/doesn't affect ratings, but I can't be arsed to Google it. I know I almost never watch a TV show live when it airs anymore, it's either DVR or On Demand viewing later for me.

So excited for this season. When they announced the TV show long ago, I thought to myself if they made it to the 3rd and 4th season on TV but didn't make it any further, I'd be content with that (of course I'll keep watching if they do more but those are just my favorites).

One week!!

Thanks for the thread. I would complain about the show moving to Sunday, but Game of Thrones is over and Insecure ends next week. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to watch this on the Starz app on Sunday morning.

I'm ready for some more Outlander! Hope one of the streaming services in Sweden will pick it up without a lot of delay.

I really liked where season two ended, though all things said I was a bit disappointed with the France arc as it did very little to advance the larger story. Season one was great for me all the way through and I hope season three can keep up the general quality of the show.

The season premiere is tonight!

The Battle Joined

Season 3 begins with Jamie at the mercy of unforgiving British victors, following the Battle of Culloden, until a connection from his past provides his only hope of survival. Meanwhile, a pregnant Clarie attempts to adjust to life in 1940s Boston and life with Frank.

For this show in particular, I wouldn't be worried as such for on the night viewing figures.

This thing is gonna have killer legs over the years on streaming / dvd platforms as a complete Saga.

Tis very good. That said, I did tune out mid way through S2, pure because I wanted to wait and binge on it. Must get on that.

Looking forward to watching this with my wife this evening. She is a massive fan and read all the books. I got a bit bored halfway through the first book but still enjoy the TV series.

Strong premiere. I'm definitely glad that they showed
flashbacks to the Battle of Culloden since they skipped over it last season (even though it was still a tad anti climactic to only see it in bits and pieces). It was rough to see the British soldiers leading the surviving Scots one by one to their deaths. :( I assume Murtagh is still alive though since we never saw what happened to him. :)

They're much older now, but fuck it if I don't want to see some Claire and Jamie sex scenes again. These two can teach stans of a recent pairing in another show what real chemistry is.

That was harrowing to watch.

Claire's going through her own personal hell. Even leaving Frank out of it, life as a lonely, pregnant housewife is not something I'd wish on anybody. "Don't you worry your pretty little head." Gag.

I think Jaime's scenes came out way ahead, though.

From the amazing last episode of last season ending with "I have to go back" I was so hyped for the the season opener and what we got was a filler episode with events that are not important now. I hope they dont drip this out any more.

Come on just carry on from last season for fuck sake.

It was filler to show The Battle of Culloden - the moment that the plot had been building to all series long? And to show the physical and emotional fallout of that + Claire and Jamie's separation?

You don't just jump ahead 16+ years and not show what happened in the interim.

Bingo. And I wouldn't even really call it "filler" either. It's definitely important to show what they both went through while apart. Jaime went through hell on earth at Culloden, and not to be Captain Historian but it wasn't a great time for the Scots for years afterward. Shit's probably gonna get cray. Claire's clearly having a shit time of things as well, new baby notwithstanding.

Like you said, 16+ years is a long time. Claire's goal from last season is to go back but are they going to even be the same people they were? A time jump that huge with no details would be pretty weak IMO.

Absolutely. This is a character driven show and it's essential to show the defining moments of their lives.

I thought this article was a nice write-up of what's probably the first few episodes of Season 3 (so, it spoils a couple things, they're mostly thematic about a couple characters. No big revelations in it other than what you'd see in a movie review) but it had a quote in it at the end that is appropriate here.

What of the reunion then? Some may ask why isn’t it right away, and the years apart told later in flashbacks? To that I will suggest watching the opening scene of “The Reckoning” (S1, E9), in which Jamie narrates, “Every day, every man has a choice between right and wrong, between love and hate, sometimes between life and death, and the sum of those choices becomes your life.” As Jamie and Claire each made the other a better person and encouraged his or her best qualities, the influence of each other is felt in the way they treat other people, the way they grieve and love and rebel and fight. There is no name for that presence, as it is what they feel when they are together that can’t be explained. That’s why those twenty years are not lost years; all the choices they made have led them back to each other.

Ratings: Outlander Delivers a Record

The Starz drama returned this past Sunday to a series-high audience of 1.49 million total viewers — a tally that swelled to 2.09 million over the course of three airings that night.

The 8 pm audience of 1.49 million also marks the third-largest ever for a Starz season opener, trailing Power Season 3 (2.26 mil) and Power Season 4 (1.68 mil), while the total audience of 2.1 million bests the series’ landmark “The Wedding” episode (2.04 mil).

Outlander’s performance with Women 35+ and Adults 50+ was second-best of all premium pay TV this year, behind only (and understandably) HBO’s Game of Thrones.

I'm happy this is back. I thought the first episode was good. It really showed how Jamie and Claire are struggling without each other. Frank too is in a bad place.

If Claire meets with that dean again I wonder if she'll be able to hold her tongue.

Which reminds me, I'm still on book two. I got sidetracked at some point and I want to go back to it.

New episode tonight!

Surrender

Jamie leads a lonely life hidden in a cave until Lallybroch is threatened by redcoats pursing the elusive Jacobite traitor; and in Boston, Claire and Frank struggle to coexist in a marriage haunted by the ghost of Jamie.

Dived into Episode 1 this morning. "Where'd she get the red hair?" Jeez, what a final line for the episode. I know it's supposed to be a dramatic moment but it cracked me up.

Episode 2 was kind of a downgrade from last week. Claire's scenes felt a little bit dull to me (except for when she enrolls in medical school and finally meets someone who isn't a dick, but that was a very brief scene) but on second thought I think that's the point. Claire's life sucks without Jaime. She had a better life as a 1700s woman living with an outlaw than as a modern day housewife (granted, her life with Jaime wasn't the least bit conventional).

Poor Fergus (but at least he is a man of leisure now!)

Episode two dragged a bit but I still liked it. It really shows how difficult it has been for Jamie and Claire, being apart.

And am I crazy but does Fergus have a half French, half Scottish accent now? It was more than just saying "aye".

I thought it was a strong follow up to the premiere - Claire's side was a bit bland, but it was more of a Jamie episode anyway.

And am I crazy but does Fergus have a half French, half Scottish accent now? It was more than just saying "aye".

I noticed that as well. Fergus' actor did a good job of not over doing it.

Although the Outlander TV show dropped in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic in season two, the total audience actually grew by nearly five percent. Because premium cable networks rely on paid subscribers — rather than ad revenue — audience growth is more important than a show’s demo numbers

Still because its Starz I'm worried... I think that Black Sails and Outlander would have done wonders on HBO or Netflix.

But great first two episodes!

Will never get tired of intro music.

Well that's one way for you to learn your lesson. Fergus will have Iron hand now

Y'all heathens need to respect the GOAT intro music, the French remix.

I appreciate that they re-do the intro with every major story arc. Redoing the music and the visuals gives the show that extra bit of polish.

Wait is it not like season 1?

The intro is different every season. It's actually rather clever. Season 2 was French-styled to fit the locale, and this season cuts out the piping bags as the Scotsmen have lost their rebellion and spirit. That's how I interpret the change anyway.

Very good episode this week.
They're going through history, at least with Claire's side, faster than I expected they would. Hope we see more of Claire working at the hospital before she goes back through time.

Also, RIP Frank :(

Last nights ep was great, so much happening.

RIP Frank, sad to see him go, the actor that plays him was fantastic and I was looking forward to seeing him more since his "past" character was killed off.

Didn’t noticed that. Just the slower tempo. Good touch.

I like how they didn’t drag the present Claire part and jump through the years. Poor Frank didn’t even get to eat his Candy 🍬

Interesting premise. How much does the show deal with the time traveling / sci-fi aspects?

S1 basically not at all. Claire starts in her modern time, then gets magically warped to the past and tries to get back.

S2 introduces some timeline altering fuckery, but the show never tries to explain how or why the time travelling works. It's basically magic.
