"Diggin In The Carts" a video game music documentary ft huge electronic music artists

I was disappointed that Takenobu Mitsuyoshi was featured in the original trailer, but not in a single episode! where is my Daytona? Where are my Blue Blue Skies???

I wanna fly sky-high :(

I finished watching the documentary and I highly enjoyed it. Music is one of my passions and video game music has been in my main three of categories of music I listen to. I did feel that the fifth episode wasn't as informative and it was mostly about Kojima's fascination about films. While that is relevant, because some of the music in his games are similar to the ones in film, he became the focus rather than the music and the composers for his games.

I also loved the commentary from the artists. I was hoping to hear about how these commentators talk about how the featured composer influenced some of their music compositions. It made it sound like they just like the sounds, but never looked at what they did and apply it to their style of music.

I want to see more of this and the giant Koji Kondo, should without question have his own dedicated episode.

He wasn't in a single episode? Boo.

Were there any signs of Mizuguchi in the series? I know he never really made a lot of music for his games (save for the Genki Rockets stuff in Lumines Live and Child of Eden) but his usage of music in Lumines, Rez etc. should definitely rate some kind of mention (I'd think).

I really enjoyed this series. I liked the first 5, and even though Uematsu gets a lot of coverage, I don't mind because he is probably my favorite. I learned quite a bit, but it made me want more. I hope they release some of the unused footage.

This documentary hit so close to home. The initial narration pretty much described my growing years of listening to music, I really did listen more game music than any other type. It was really wonderful to watch this, so much that it's hard to put into words.

And good lord did they make Yuzo Koshiro look like a total fucking boss. And deservingly so, of course.

Definitely looking forward to checking out this long video---far and away the sort of thing that they should've been doing versus that last "bonus" video for the final part in the series proper that was only like 35-45sec long.

Edit: Shoot, totally glazed over the.jp part of the link----here's to hoping they get this subtitled sooner than later then!

The link works like Famitsu links, you have to highlight the address bar and press Enter.

I'm listening to the remixes posted below the episodes right now. I'll agree with the rest of you about the series - 1-4 were great, 5 was too focused on Uematsu and the live concerts (he's not the only great RPG composer in Japan, you know!), and 6, despite the ending, was a waste - as someone above said, no Beatmania or DDR? No Daytona stuff? No freakin' Yamane?! Symphony Of The Night would have been a great capstone on the Konami segment, but no, Kojima has to hog the spotlight as always[/DarkSydePhil] :p

Oh yeah - where's Meguro? His Persona 3 and 4 work is surely up there with the best, if we're talking more modern Japanese game music. I'm sure there's many I couldn't name for the life of me who would've made for better subject matter than Kojima and Harada for a series about Japanese video game music composers' influence on western culture.

In terms of the evolution of game music, I disagree. That shit about Phantom Pain's soundtrack being adaptive to Snake's actions is fucking crazy.

I finally got around to watching it, and I was enjoying up until my disappointment where Michiru Yamane is shown in the damn intro but never beyond that. What the hell? The episode 6 description even states, " This episode features Michiru Yamane, most well-known for her work on the Castlevania series, alongside director/writer Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid’s Teruta and Namco composer/engineer Yuu Miyake." And yet...Kojima made it in instead?

What a farce. I was really looking forward to her segment too.

don't care even slightly if the last couple episodes were a bit mediocre when episodes 1-4 were A+++

agree though that I'd pay $$$ for a package with the unreleased footage

I recently started watching this again, and I am still waiting on a Blu-ray to be produced. This thing is so beautifully shot.
So in waiting for the Blu-ray, last night I decided to take matters into my own hands. I'm going to make a Blu-ray for myself. Hopefully I'm not doing anything illegal since I am not planning on distributing it in any way. Took me a while to figure out how to download the source vids from the site, but it seems to be working.
The audio mixes on the site don't seem to work anymore. Does anyone have any direct links to any of them?

Finally watched the last two parts. Definitely not as good, but still worth a watch.

I have to admit the sudden leap past Sega CD and the Turbo Duo to the PSX kind of irritated me. Obvious marketing dollars at work. PSX invented the CD as much as NES invented the cartridge.

Hate to necro, but I was just watching Vice's "Pixel by Pixel" and it reminded me of this. Has there been any movement since they said they were working on editing the extra bits? Put this on Kickstarter, what will it take for me to own a great big version?

Wow. Glad this was bumped since I had never heard of this documentary. It's wonderful to see all these interviews with the composers of that era.
I've always felt that the limitations of the 8-bit and 16-bit era made it so they had to write truly memorable melodies to make up for it.

There's also this highlighting the soon to come Koshiro/Kawashima/etc(?) tour thing:

Just got tickets for the Los Angeles stop of the tour:

WTF?! YUZO KOSHIRO IS TOURING THE US?

AM I OVERREACTING? IS THIS JUST ONE DATE IN LA? DON'T TOY WITH ME INTERNET

EDIT: I was. 3 stops. NY/Tokyo/London. But a new season (?) of Diggin' In The Carts premieres on Red Bull Radio on October 25th! https://www.magneticmag.com/2017/09/red-bull-music-academy-diggin-in-the-carts-world-tour/
