Vice: I love "Rick & Morty" and I hate its fans

how come tv shows, cartoons, and video games get weird and awful fanbases but no one ever worships YouTube personalities?

How come tv shows, cartoons, video games and YouTubers get weird and awful fanbases but no one ever holds a famous author hostage in their home until they write a book to revive their favorite character that the author killed off?

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
The edgiest, Harry-Potter-glasses-wearingest, grandfather's-sweater-havingest, "I like to draw the angst of my teenage soul as a furry version of me in this mock Moleskin notebook only using Korean 0.38mm gel pens"iest, "UGH I HATE THE BASKETBALL TEAM"iest teens I teach fucking *LOVE* Rick & Morty and never shut up hell up about it.

It's admittedly silly but they've 100% turned me off watching the show. Just like people who won't shut the fuck up about how the Wire is the best show ever (it's good) or how Parks & Rec is some masterpiece (it's funny I guess).

That's because The Wire really is that good.

See! It's not just me.

I also pointed out how horrible some Rick and Morty fans were, a couple of weeks ago. But I was told that I shouldn't be basing that off YouTube comments, which is true, but in this case, it was further evidence about the attitude of some fans.

The big list of awful fanbases:

SuperWhoLock fans
Bronies
R&M fans
J.Cole fans
Walking Dead fans
Wrestling fans (especially)
Patriots fans
Xxxtentacion fans
LoL players
Zack Snyder fans
South Park fans
Those GoT fans that make podcasts all about what the fuck Jon Snow or whoever the fuck ate for breakfast that one time in season 20, episode 4
Prequels fans
PewDiePie fans

With Trump fans obviously getting the gold medal
You forgot Sonic and Undertale

Didn't realize there was so much wankery over the show. I just started binge watching it and was surprised by how, well, "smart" it was so I kept watching it. I mean it's not really the jokes that get me but rather the surprisingly thoughtful character interaction that serves as the basis for much of the humor. It's fun to have a show make light of very serious mental health issues but also have the presence of mind to lighten things up with juvenile humor to get my mind off shit.

I guess I'm part of the problem, but I didn't realize there were other ass hats like me out there wanking over it the same way. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I should probably spend more time on the internet.
I mean you're not the problem.
The type and nature of the show being clever and chalk full of pop culture references means it will always attract the subset of "red pilled" basement dwellers whose lives are so pathetic they need a cartoon to cling onto to feel superior over another person.

this is absolutely me.

what really confuses me is how people think the show is somehow subtly brilliant. i mean it's got great writing and characters but is about as understated as a kick in the face.

Yeah it's kinda too bad that so many of their fans are totally toxic towards the female staff writers, for example. The moment you start self-identifying with Rick you've gone TOO FAR.
People who identify with Rick and view him as a hero don't understand that he's an irredeemable sack of shit who occasionally has moments of clarity. Or they do understand that, which is even worse. He's a good character, but he's not a good person.

LOL I saw that tweet too. This has come up a lot recently but the people who see themselves in characters like Bojack Horseman and Rick Sanchez and don't recognize the fact that both characters are damaged and damage their loved ones are indeed very problematic, to say the least. A similar discussion was brought up around the time Breaking Bad was all anyone talked about. Around then there were many fans who idealized Walt because he was "smart, ruthless and aggressive" in getting what he wanted while Skylar was a "naggy, overbearing, bitch" for trying to "tear him down and undermine his success".
There's similarities with BoJack, but that character genuinely wants to be a better person, and you feel for him. He just keeps failing at it. In the worst ways. Rick, on the other hand, has given up on ever being a good person.

I feel like most Rick and Morty fans don't actually understand the philosophical underpinnings of the show and just think its super edgy and roll with it from there.

Like "Nobody belongs anywhere, nobody exists on purpose, everyone is going to die, come watch TV." is one of the greatest distillations of enlightened nihilism/enlightened absurdism ever written but most people are just "lol get your shit together in a backpack lol"
Yup. There's the people who like it for the biting deconstruction of the 21st century American family, and then there's the people who like it for "Get Schwifty".

Weird. The pop culture references are fun but they're frequently just a setup for the more interesting elements of the show. I'm actually kind of surprised that that aspect is actually the main pull for anyone. Huh.

i think that crowd is more into the extreme violence and transgressive humor while failing to see the real point of either

This is MLP:FiM all over again.

Good show with some insufferable fans.

Speaking of insufferable...when will people stop using asinine abbreviations for everything? Does it really take that much effort to write out the full title? I have no fucking clue what you're referring to here.

Edit: now that I've figured it out, was it really that much easier than just writing My Little Pony?

You don't want to know. Keep your innocence.

Are you familiar with Supernatural at all?

Because you wouldn't be saying that if you were.

One terrifyingly enlightening Google search later and I have resolved my previous ignorance.

I know now, that without a doubt, all television fandoms are utter shit

So far my personal record is 9 days without someone telling me how much I need to watch the show. I tell them I have, but just didnt like it. Inevitably the conversation then moves to how i must not get it, or have no watched enough episodes.

flash forward a few days then repeat the conversation with the next person who has little more to offer in the way of conversation other than what they watch on their tv and repeat.

I didn't realise how bad the fanbase was until this season started. It feels like it's grown and gotten worse since last time out. The gaf thread here is fine but anywhere else isn't great.

Where do people keep running into these toxic fans? I love the show and the only interactions I've been a apart of, or encountered, are recommending the show or discussing episodes.

A similar thing happened with Undertale. Everyone says the fandom was awful, but all I saw were a bunch of fun remixes of the music. Guess I'm good at avoiding those neighborhoods.

Hell, the show itself is starting to get a bit high off it's own supply. This season has had way more episodes straight up celebrating Rick's depravity compared to the much more critical lens he'd be viewed under in earlier seasons.

Why is it that cartoons that get popular have incredibly toxic and weird fandoms, but TV shows are perfectly normal?

A lot of times, they either are or have the same issues as anime fans, cosplayers, pony fans, Steven universe, videogames, etc. It becomes their identity rather than a fandom. No different than sport teams fans, but the online presence is greater for those.

judging by your avatar, you like the show, so no fans talk down to you for not getting it

Smoked a lot of weed, got high, then saw ONE picture of the Pickle Rick condoms! I thought to myself, I WANT ONE! Then.... I realized they aren't for sale anywhere... so why not make them myself?

Could someone tell me what's wrong with South Park fans? I'm a fan but I don't know any other fans and never talk about the show to anyone.

CGP Grey nailed it in his lates q&a video how tribalism serves as a base for both the best (advanced cooperation and civilization) and the worst (toxicity towards other groups) aspects of humanity.
