To be fair, I’m a hypocrite since Steven Universe is one of my all-time favorite cartoons and there’s fans of that on tumblr that are bat-shit insane

Just wait for all the fucking Pickle Ricks this Halloween, it's going to make trashcan-humping Comic-Con Deadpool cosplayers look like saints.

It's not going to be the Pickle Rick costumes that are going to be the most prevalent. It will be the "Look at me Morty, I turned myself into a pumpkin! Pumpkin Rick!!!!!!! pumpkin carvings.

How about Juggalos? Does he like them?
No joke, but Juggalos are the only people I've never had a bad experience with, fandomwise. R&M, gamers, anime fans, bronies, furries--I've encountered some crazy (in a bad way) and some assholes, but Juggalos are all kinda just nice people with questionable taste in music.

Probably asshole Juggalos too, but man, that percent has to be lower.

R&M fans
J.Cole fans
Walking Dead fans
Wrestling fans (especially)

Frankly, I was turned off by the show's overly nerdy humor, everyone talks about it as if it were this great, hilarious show but it was meh to me, even obnoxious at times.

Pickle Rick am i right guys hahahahaha

i mean it was a funny episode

what's the big deal?

there's this thing that happens - and as a wrestling fan, pal, you should know this - where the perception of the fanbase ends up determining the perception of the work itself, and is then extended to represent EVERYTHING about that work and any reason you could possibly have for enjoying it.

it's a shortcut and jumping to conclusions first way of thinking. and really, it isn't worth it. it doesn't get you anything. rick and morty is a reasonably funny show that is currently on that a lot of people like. it might have some problems in there, sure go ahead and analyse it, but don't just fire out a strawman youtube comment style quote and splatter the whole thing with it.

Wow, you thought "wubba lubba dub time for some grub" was obnoxious? Maybe go back to school dude.

It's probably gonna be the only thing you see on r/All this October outside of Trump propaganda.

I love Rick and Morty, but I am troubled at how much of its fan base idolizes Rick, who is shown to be a broken and horrible human being.

I always thought that the fanbase was onbnoxious, but the recent blowback against the fanbase is almost as annoying.

I'm glad there wasn't a toxic fanbase during the original airings of Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls >_>

I need a neogaf avatar that puts walter white, heath ledger joker, don draper from mad men, and rick together

Do the types of fans in the article forget that "wubba lubba dub dub" is translated in-show as "I am in great pain please help me?" Or that time Rick was actually going to kill himself but passed out drunk so the laser missed his head when it fell on the desk?

I'M A PICKLE MORTY I TURNED MYSELF INTO A PICKLE

I liked Pickle Rick for its obvious "What stupid hi-jinks is Rick up to this week?" send up, but I knew right away it was going to turn into a stupid fan catchphrase. :/

I always thought that the fanbase was onbnoxious, but the recent blowback against the fanbase is almost as annoying.
Let's hope all this doesn't discourage Dan Harmon. He's the type to take things to heart.

i don't even know where the 'rick and morty is humour for smart people' thing comes from. it is an absurdist show, MOST of the jokes are intentional non-sequiters or otherwise riffing on tropes in other lowbrow media. is it because everyone in the show keeps saying rick is super smart? i mean he makes references to tv shows, internet fads, every dumb thing currently going on. he's only smart cos the show says he knows how to do amazing science things, he himself is just a riff on doc from back to the future i mean god damn

it's just a stupid comedy cartoon. people will superimpose shit onto anything with even the vaguest nerdy subject matter

People think this show is smart??

that's the thing that's surprising me most about this. it doesn't even try to be, it's the dumbest show ever. they have episodes which revolve around improv'd bullshit spoofs of bad tv. it's just a goof.

No, they relate to that shit because they think their own personal pain justifies being complete assholes to other people.

It's because they have montages with slow indie songs at the end of some episodes.

That's the key. Gotta have them slow indie song montages.

It also has Rick be all depressed sometimes. That's smart stuff right there.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Toxic fanbases are everywhere. Enjoy what you like, but in moderation...

too bad there isn't a character in the show who's explicitly designed around highlighting rick's failures as a person and how ill-advised it is to adore him unquestioningly

Could someone tell me what's wrong with South Park fans? I'm a fan but I don't know any other fans and never talk about the show to anyone.
Skirting around the show creators themselves and their sometimes racist and sexist depictions of things (hello Kanye's mom as a mammy in the new game), there's a certain segment of the SP fanbase that subscribes to the philosophies the show talks about. Basically, they are the classic "both sides" people that hate political correctness and smug liberals, and hold the view that everything it's terrible and they try to be above it all. A classic example is when people look at the "Douche v. Turd" episode. The moral of that story was that both Democrats and Republicans are awful but it's your civic duty to vote. Ultimately it doesn't matter so who cares! I know a lot of South Park fans that took that episode's message to heart

That episode aired a week before Bush v. Kerry

There's a term for it, South Park Republican
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Park_Republican

Well, hang on, the show isn't not not-smart. There's some legitimate philosophical conversations going on. But none of it is genius level required reading level discourse.

The show does a pretty good job of exploring the pitfalls of nihilism while showing enlightened absurdism as a more tenable worldview, but it's not freakin Wittgenstein or anything,

It‘s like the Undertale of TV shows.
Not if Steven Universe has anything to say about that

Where do people keep running into these toxic fans? I love the show and the only interactions I've been a apart of, or encountered, are recommending the show or discussing episodes.

A similar thing happened with Undertale. Everyone says the fandom was awful, but all I saw were a bunch of fun remixes of the music. Guess I'm good at avoiding those neighborhoods.
I only willingly interact with small fanbases, or stick to the GAF OTs
