3/4s through the year. What are you favorite games so far?

I did one of these at the 1/4 mark of the year, and I'm interested to see if anyone's games from then have changed now.

I'm struck not just at the quantity of the games released this year (and I feel every year, there's been a ton), but also the variety. I've had everything from a new open-world RPG in Horizon Zero Dawn, to a lean and great action-adventure in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, to a Contra/Resogun hybrid in Matterfall, to a blast from the past and "everything is new again" in Sonic Mania, to gravity defying acrobatics in Gravity Rush 2, to a wonderful remake in Crash N.Sane Trilogy. I have Undertale for PS4 pre-ordered and am looking forward to seeing what the hype is about, not just online but also from friends who have played it. I also have Horizon Zero Dawn's DLC pre-ordered, and I may very well play the whole damn game again a third time.

I still feel, same as in April, that I've only scratched the surface. I won't list all the games I haven't played but want to play, but it's long and exciting as I'm sure many of your "need to play" lists are.

Like earlier this year, I've put a big list here as comprehensive as I've been able to make it throughout the year. There may still be games missing, and I'm sorry if/when you find ones that are. Looking forward to the GOTY voting thread later this year. =)

I haven't played much released this year, but Persona 5 may be my all-time favorite. So that.

On the indie side, What Remains of Edith Finch is one of the best "walking simulators" ever made. I hope it gets even a little bit of votes come GOTY time

So far its Nier, Zelda, Yakuza 0 and Tekken 7 for me. The year has been good. But Mario and gts are coming shortly and it's going to be a big holiday, too.

My top 5 so far :

1) Persona 5

2) Splatoon 2

3) The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild

4) Fire Emblem Echoes : Shadows of Valencia

5) Horizon : Zero Dawn

Still haven't played NieR Automata so my top 5 might change when I get to play it. Other than that, I only see Super Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 taking a spot if they end up being good. Maybe Fire Emblem Warriors too.

Purchased (granted, one of these was a 2014 game):

Hyrule Warriors
Breath of the Wild
Super Bomberman R
Mario Kart 8 DX
ARMS
Splatoon 2
Metroid: Samus Returns

Favorite would be a tough choice between Splatoon 2 and Breath of the Wild. Though they've all been great except for Bomberman, which was enjoyable but pretty flawed.

My top 4 are all pretty much perfect, for various reasons.

1. Cuphead
2. Snake Pass
3. Horizon Zero Dawn
4. Nex Machina

The first two are easily two of my favorite games ever.

Thus far Prey, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5, Persona 5, Zelda BOTW & Steamworld Dig 2 for games that have come out this year.

Mario Odyssey will soon likely be number 1 by the end of this month.

I'm now realizing that the only games I bought from this year were Fire Emblem and Stormblood. I should buy Sonic Mania or something.

So I guess those two.

I still have a bunch of games to catch up on but tentatively in no order:

Resident Evil VII
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS
Sonic Mania
What Remains of Edith Finch
Cuphead
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

2. Injustice 2
3. Crash Bandicoot

Uncharted The Lost Legacy

If we're going to count the Ringed City, I'll say the Ringed City. Followed by Nioh and Cuphead.

Not much else to care about with RDR2 delayed to 2018.

So far this year:

1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
3. Disgaea 5 Switch Edition
4. Persona 5
5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Horizon Zero Dawn
Metroid: Samus Returns
Crash Bandicoot The N. Sane Trilogy

Coincidentally the only three new releases I've played this year.

Only other game I'll be buying this year is Star Wars Battlefront II.

Nier.

No, just in quarters. My last one was 1/4. Someone got the halfway mark before I got to it. Now 3/4s, and I'll be awaiting the GOTY voting thread.

That's a lot of work put into a thread that's probably gonna get locked.

Hope not as my first one wasn't.

Oh? I'd love to hear what attracts you so much to those two! I've definitely heard great things about Cuphead, but haven't heard as much GAF reaction from Snake Pass.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Sonic Mania
Splatoon 2.

Given how busy life has been this year portable gaming has been very helpful. These games were great to play in between sessions

At the moment, my top 5 games of the year would be as follows:

1. NieR: Automata
2. Yakuza 0
3. Prey
4. Horizon Zero Dawn
5. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

NieR is a true gamechanger for me and is my current game of the generation, have had so much fun with it, love the combat and the story, possibly the most invested I've ever felt in a game.

Yakuza 0 was my first Yakuza game and I absolutely adored it. Just so much fun to play, with truly incredible characters and a fantastic sense of humour. Need to pick up Kiwami asap

Prey was as good as I thought it'd be - in that it's an Arkane game, so it was always going to be great. That post-credits curveball was cool as hell too.

And then to the 2 open world games from the early part of the year. Horizon just edges out Zelda for 2 reasons for me so far - 1. I've yet to actually finish Zelda, 2. I prefer the combat in Horizon. Both are stunningly good games though with cool art styles.

There's so much from this year that I still need to play - namely the likes of Persona 5, Hellblade, Metroid, Danganronpa and Mario + Rabbids, not to mention the vast amount of cool looking games yet to be released, like Mario, Star Wars Battlefront 2, Wolfenstein and South Park: The Fractured But Whole. So far, this year looks like it'll be considered a brilliant year for gaming.

Of 2017 NA releases? Yakuza 0 by a long shot, followed by Persona 5.

Of any game I played? Dragon Quest V, VIII, or Yakuza 0.

Really would have liked to play RE7, Horizon, and Nier to have a more comprehensive list but oh well. Should be interesting to see how it stacks up once Mario and some Fall games are out.

I'll just throw out my top 5 even though we have some serious contenders in October especially

1. Nier: Automata
2. Metroid: Samus Returns
3. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4. Resident Evil VII: Biohazard
5. Prey

I've never played a Yakuza game either, and I know a decent amount of people here started with 0. How is the gameplay specifically? How does it feel?

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

There's still a lot I haven't played this year, and a lot I'm looking forward to that hasn't come out yet, but for me at the moment it's:

Destiny 2
Horizon Zero Dawn
Wonder Boy The Dragon's Trap
Cuphead
Observer

For me:

1. Resident Evil 7 in vr
2. Yakuza Zero
3. Persona 5
4. Uncharted Lost Legacy
5. Crash Bandicoot Insane Trilogy

I swear we just did this a couple days ago.

Wasn't me, nor did I see it, so I wouldn't say "we" did anything? I was planning on doing this in quarter chunks, and I only got to the first quarter of the year (there's a link to my first thread in the OP) as someone else made a thread that got to multiple pages halfway through the year. I'm not on all the time to see every thread, and it's for fun.

Torn between Zelda BotW, Ys VIII and Monster Hunter Stories at the moment. All excellent.

My plan for the rest of the year, spare time allowing, is Steamworld Dig 2, Fire Emblem Warriors and Etrian Odyssey V, so we'll see how I feel in January, I suppose!

Cuphead - by a mile, there just is not anything like it on the market.

I have a mountain of a backlog though, still need to catch up on: Nier, Prey, Yakuza 0, Uncharted LL, Zelda and a slew of indie games.

Yakuza 0
Lost Legacy

Hitman is probably my real number one, though it's obviously not a 2017 release.

Also just started Divinity: Original Sin and am really enjoying it. Expecting the sequel to factor into my rankings if I have time for it. Wolf 2 and Mario Odyssey will almost certainly be in there as well.
