Stardew Valley for Nintendo Switch |OT| Starving for a Harvest

If you're gonna upgrade your watering can check the weather forecast for a rainy day then do it. Otherwise you lose 2 days of watering.

Okay, so two things I've noticed this morning: If you craft something, and it takes up a spot in your inventory, you cannot drop what it replaces. You have to trash it, which is a little alarming.

Also, in the community centre menu, you can't see the name of the requirements, only a picture. I'm sure this is not like the PS4 version, and it'll make accumulating those items pretty tiresome.

Just had my first crash that made me lost an entire day of removing weed and wood. I was playing one arcade game of Cowboys vs Aliens and when trying to find the button to get out the game I pressed the minus button and the crash happened.

Fun game though, I would have appreciated some tutorials and guidance from NPCs about the activities you can do but nothing. I wanted to go blind on this but it's starting to be hard.

You can look at the community center from the inventory screen? Whaaaaat

All the time I spent running back and forth to check whether I could sell whatever I just got. :(

Just done 4 days and not really sure the best way of going about anything. Feels like I can't really do much without getting exhausted (and then what do I do for the rest of the day) and not really sure the best way to accumulate money because I don't know what I might regret selling.

I have owned this game for PC since it was released, but this game is like crack on the Switch. I have been carrying my Switch all around the house and playing it non-stop.

At the beginning I purchased as much of the cheapest seeds as I could and planted them to make some quick cash.

The controls definitely have some weird quirks but you get used to them pretty quick. I actually had a harder time adjusting to the pc controls back when I played it. Ended up using a weird “left hand 360/right hand mouse” setup

Question: the game says that melons take 12 days to mature. Does that mean if I plant them on the 16th I'll be able to harvest them on the 28th (last day of Summer) or will it be the day after that (the first day of Fall, meaning they die)?

anyway to bring back objectives from the journal you might've accidentally dismissed?

I accidentally dismissed the "say hi to everyone in town" quest and I'm curious as to how many people I've introduced myself to.

This is a serious game.

Only bugbear is the main character model. The male one. He looks like a goddamn goof. Like Big Bird's head on a middle-aged office worker's body.

Is the female avvy's face any better? Can I change after the initial character creator???

I did this too, on another tutorial quest. Worried I knocked myself out of a tree of 'tutorial' quests. Some other quests seem to keep popping up but there's no way of knowing if I missed any.

Mine disappeared on me too, not sure if you can get it back for the reward but you can just look in your relationships tab to see how many people still have “????” Under their picture.

I've really been enjoying my time with the game so far, but I'm having a few grievances.

1.) No way to drop items? I've had to trash a few things right in my own home in front of my chest because there doesn't seem to be a way, or had to throw away food when opening a chest when I would've like to either back out or drop the item so I could eat the food. I've since learned to make sure to keep an open item slot when crafting or opening chests, but this still seems like a basic feature that should be there.

2.) What the fuck is going on with the crafting screen? Why is it so hard to pick the item you want? There are a few items I simply can't select like the campfire or the ring. Even a simple list would've been better.

3.) Also, it's annoying that I can't see how much I would get from shipping an item in the item box.

I know I dropped an item, I think I took the item and moused over ok to get it to drop at my feet rather than trashing it? I'm not too sure though.

Finally get to play this. Loved the black-cart Harvest Noon on the GBC, haven't played much of the series since and didn't like the visual direction it took so I'm really glad that this has been the success it has.

Any non spoiler tips for the beginner?
Just play the game skip the guides. After completing year 1 try some guides if you want it .

There doesn't seem to be an ok button?

Hm, looks like it might only show up when you're fishing and you have a full inventory already, which makes it really not useful. Looks like you're right though. That does seem like an oversight. Was there a way to drop on PC?

Bought the game on sale on PS4, never played it
Purchased it again for switch with the intention to give it a go, but I'm already lost. I've got out of bed and left my home and now just... What??

This reminds me so much of the fun I had with Harvest Moon DS years ago!

So far I have hardly grown anything, spending most time mining and wandering around foraging stuff. There seems to be a ton of stuff to do.

In terms of value for money, this game is incredible. I think I am going to end up playing hundreds of hours of this, for about a quarter of the price of an 'AAA' retail game.

Yeah, it's terrible. I had to fill out more of the crafting screen by acquiring blueprints so I could take another "route" to the campfire with the cursor.
I can also only get to the community center menu from the inventory screen even though the button is visible on other screens as well. Just can't get the cursor to go to the button.

I hope they fix this.

Is anyone elses forecast bugged?

For the first 5 days it has told me it is going to rain the next day but it only has rained once.

Well that's just realism then.

:p

I'm worried about later when I want to upgrade my tools!

Also as someone who has more than 200 hours in the PC version of this game I'm having some difficulty getting used to console controls. I miss that KBM control fidelity.

Got this today. Totally loving it. About an hour into it.

Have only found 26/28 people to talk too though. For the life of me, I cannot find the last two >.<

I had fun with the couple of hours I played last night , but the controls are utterly shite and there are some pretty obvious QOL features missing.

I’m just worried it’ll suck, since I’ve been looking forward to this for a while and never played the PC version.

Were you used to the PC controls?
Nah, don't worry. I was used to the PC controls and it's mostly fine. There's some weird stuff in the menus where you sometimes can't select certain things (see above) and apparently the controls of one minigame are messed up but other than that it plays great.

No, and they game doesn't suck so you can stop worrying. And there are other people talking about the controls on this very page.

It's just silly stiff like not being able to drop items or cancel out a crafting choice ( ie if you open the crafting menu and press A ( I think ) it build whatever you clicked and if your inventory is full you've no choice but to trash something - you can't just press B to cancel the build or choose an item to drop in the floor ).

Other stuff like not being able to drag an area for laying your seeds or whatever seems like a missed opportunity on a touch device and unless I'm missing something it can't be done with buttons either so every single tile had to be done manually.

Does this game have a story? Something to follow along?

I never got into animal crossing for example, since it was just me doing random tasks for what appeared to be no reason

So I wonder if I'll like this game

Haven't tested this, but earlier someone wrote you could just put the item back into the crafting menu to cancel. Does that not work?

I tried that and could not get it to work, once you craft something there is no way to undo it.

There is a quest structure and an ultimate "goal" that will take you hundreds of hours to achieve. You can ignore all that and play however you like but the RPG elements are there, which is what sets the game apart from Animal Crossing.

Yeah this was driving me insane! Will see if I can 'mouse over' anywhere to drop.

So, is this game OK for my 8 year old daughter play?

100%. It's pretty complex at times but totally age-appropriate.

Hmmm interesting..

I loaded this up for the first time yesterday and I was VERY surprised by how much structure and narrative there is. There's actual lead-in for you coming to Stardew Valley and an actual contention/drama in the world.

This game is loaded with story when you compare it side-by-side with Animal Crossing. Even just talking to people they feel like fleshed out people rather than cartoon cut-outs. (I do love AnCro though.)

I gave the fancy girl a potato for her birthday. I'm just a poor potato farmer and that's all I had, but she did not appreciate it.
