I managed to track down why I thought it was the case:

https://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/SRHoliwell/20150130/235329/A_Maze_of_Murderscapes_Metroid_II.php

I read that article long ago, my main interaction with the original game, and that passage stuck into my head. Another thing that was stuck in my head was
that that capsule was using the missile image,
but I couldn't find back where I read that trivia bit.

And actually looking at the ending here[►] you can clearly see the flashing
missile at the middle of the ship that people interpreted as being the capsule to contain the Metroid, not present before, that you have to touch to end the game.
So I thought this was the common interpretation. Is it not? ^_^"

huh

I NEVER noticed that before.

Just beat it. 11:40 hours. Damn, what a finale. Can't wait for what Nintendo has planned next for Metroid :) Not sure this entry will be one of the more replayable Metroids IMO, but nonetheless had a great time with it.

Ughhh I hate this. I'm a huge Nintendo fan and ever since fusion I've known metroid is not for me. But I bought this due to the hype and I sold it for half the price already. I feel like a dumbass. I just can't get myself to like these games. But I can for sure see why fans would love it

So as I understand the hard mode in this game is locked behind the amiibo right?

If I plan to play this game just one time, and that I like Hard game, should I just go for it with the amiibo from the start?

There is a hard mode that unlocks after beating it on normal. I am not sure if Fusion mode is actually harder than hard mode or if it is unlocked the moment the amiibo is used.

No, normal mode is plenty difficult for a first timer ;^)

There is a Hard mode included in the game besides the Amiibo but honestly its the same experience so far, you already know how to kill most common enemies and Metroids they just deal a little bit more damge.

I'm debating whether to buy it physical or digital, I'm not in the US so physical is a bit harder to find and more expensive, however physical is always so much better, how many blocks does the game use?

Says it right there in the first page, but 5458 blocks.

This is covered in the OP.

The game offers three difficulty modes, Normal, Hard, and Fusion Mode (the latter is only accessible via amiibo, see section below for details):

  • Metroid Amiibo (Metroid series): Unlocks Metroid Marker, a tool to help you find nearby Metroids. Also unlocks Fusion Mode, which increases the difficulty and puts Samus in the suit she wore in Metroid Fusion after beating the game once. Fusion Mode is harder than Hard Mode.

Like in all other Metroid games, you cannot play Hard Mode from the start without beating the game.

I'm debating whether to buy it physical or digital, I'm not in the US so physical is a bit harder to find and more expensive, however physical is always so much better, how many blocks does the game use?

I love reminding people that the OP exists with basic info like this for you to read and instantly get it answered for you without much hassle.^^

No use beating yourself up over it, not all games are for everyone. Have you tried the Prime series? They're quire different to their 2D counterparts.

Well after chugging along, I’m in the final boss fight. Gave up after 3 tried, plus its late and will try tomorrow. The GB fight was easier than this for sure, but loved how hard Nintendo made it. I’m wanting Metroid Prime 4 soon. Can’t get enough Metroidness

I finished the game last Friday.
16 hours gameplay, 92% of items.

The game was awesome. A real 2D Metroid adapted to the modern times. A great remake of the original.

With Federation Force, I almost thought Nintendo didn't give a fuck about the Metroid franchise. But I was wrong. Metroid is back!!

Now I'm even more hyped for MP4. Nintendo has showed they really know what Metroid is about, and they will give their best to make another great game.

I hope the game sold well worldwide. This game deserves so much love.

if they "didn't give a fuck," they wouldn't have spent years making a unique game to broaden the scope of the series...

I really don't get this line of thinking.

That game wasn't the game people wanted after so many years of no Metroid games. People didn't want that game, the criticism was notable from the very beginning since they announced it. After so many years, people wanted a real Metroid game, like Samus Returns, or Metroid Prime 4, not such spin-off.

I'm glad if you liked it. I cannot discuss if the game is good of bad because I haven't played it. But let's be honest, Nintendo made a huge mistake announcing the game in the conditions Metroid was those days. It felt like a joke in general, a very bad joke.

If they announced this E3 together with M:SR and MP4, I don't know what would have happened, but I'm really sure it would have been better received. It wouldn't have got all that bad criticism, bad reviews, and wouldn't have bombed the way it did either.

But all of this has nothing to do with them having seemingly not cared.

But all of this has nothing to do with them having seemingly not cared.

And as I said in my first post, Nintendo has shown they cared about Metroid with Samus Returns. Meanwhile Federation Force looked like a mediocre cooperative FPS game with the name "Metroid Prime" stuck on it when it didn't look like a Metroid game at all. How the game was announced, and the presentation, was done in a horrible way, like they didn't care about Metroid at all. No matter if they were developing another Metroid game at the same time, or how unique FF is.

To talk briefly, did Nintendo show they about Metroid cared when they announced Federation Force? No. Did they show they cared when they announced Samus Returns and MP4? Yes.

What is your criteria for "caring about Metroid"? Seems incredibly arbitrary to me. Pretty much since Nintendo did the exact same kind of rollout for MPFF as for MSR with several Treehouse Live sessions during its E3 reveal. Grander even, they debuted one of its modes during the return of the NWC beforehand, showing off the competitive side. But because you didn't care for the style of game, they didn't show they cared?

Top tip: don't bother engaging.

Same goes with Paper Mario fans.

How are you all beating this in under 13 hours? I'm 13 hours in and only 2/3 of the way through area four? I'm starting to think I suck at games. Wait, let me check... yes, I probably suck at games.

Do you have experience with Metroid games? I took my time exploring and finished the game with 85% completion in 13 hours.

Yes, I have beat all of the 2d Metroid games. Admittedly, each was completed when they were first released, so it I haven't played a 2d Metroid since 2002. I haven't been struggling with Samus Returns though.

Any tips for moving through the game faster? Are you killing every enemy as you move through an area? Do you get every item?

I beat the game 100% in ~12 hours and I thought I was moving fairly casually...

Are you backtracking to the seal after killing every Metroid? Doing so will give you a better idea of where the next metroid is, but it might add to your time.

Are you backtracking after every upgrade? It's probably best to backtrack to earlier areas once you get a couple of upgrades, if at all before the end of the game.

Although, honestly, you don't really need to go fast. Unless you're actively speedrunning or aiming for the low time endings, there's no real need for haste. Just enjoy the game as you want.

Federation Force isnt what most of the fanbase (or anyone , honestly) wanted.

Anyways, Samus Returns is Metroid but without all the bullshit! :)

But, again, how does that preclude Nintendo from caring for the franchise?

oh, i suspected they had much more in the works when they announced Federation Force, but that doesnt mean the fans have to care or buy a game they dont want at the time or even cant critizise it for not being in line with most Metroid games after many years.

honestly i believe Federation Force would have been better announced with Prime 4 and SM Iif its going to be an spin off, but that was Nintendo

I'm not sure how much you are using the scanning tool, but it saves so much time as opposed to having to bomb or missile walls to find secrets like in the other 2D Metroids.

Nintendo cares about Metroid, they are just absolutely clueless of what makes the games and Samus so loved by the press and fans alike. On one hand this means the will stick with the tried and true formula, on the other it limits innovation, I really hope we can get more than just clones of Super Metroid and Metroid prime ad nauseum, but if the alternative is games like Other M/Federation Force then I'll take the former.

Well my question was more about whether to get it digital or physical but thanks anyway.

I think I'm at the point where I have all the suit upgrades.
I blew up the Diggernaut, got the power bombs, and entered the next area.
Is this a good time to re-visit previous areas and collect the extra tanks?

There's
one more upgrade left to get before you go back.

The actual best time to go back is after you beat the (obvious) final Metroid evolution. As you will have to go back after that again since certain areas will only be accessible after.

Beat it, 12:49 and no idea what my clear percentage was.

The boss encounters felt better polished than many Metroid games, but also felt too mechanical. Gone are the days when you could tackle Queen Metroid or
Ridley
with multiple strategies, here it's much more "dodge this attack, this attack leaves them open to counterattack."
Ridley's
much less like the knife-fight it was in other 2D Metroid games.

I didn't really feel the zest for this game, but in terms of mechanics its a real refinement of 2D Metroid and creates a strong basis for making more of them. Great difficulty balancing, well-placed upgrades, generally good pacing (though sometimes getting new weapons felt like feast or famine).

Edit: I don't know what they were thinking putting the
Baby Metroid
crystals all over the map like that. I guess you get the upgrades to help against
Ridley
but it doesn't really need a lot of upgrades the way the missile-hungry Queen does.

it doesn't say at the end screen, you'll see it on the save select in the title menu.

I had to check this after beating it but those were in the original (probably not in back-track areas, though?).

you can also see it on the map screen. and when teleporting it gives you a percentage of each area
