Autumn Anime 2017 |OT| Makes us all rotten

Speaking of Gonzo anime, this feels like a lot like something they would have done in the mid 2000s. I'm sort of mixed on this on a few different aspects. Unlike most of the dogshit that comes out nowadays this has a setting that is pretty unique and the main character is different from the usual tropes we get.
In most anime the above character would have ended up being the main character due to his power level, trouble with authority, and desire to see the outside world. Instead we essentially get a librarian. I'm not completely sold on Chakuro as a lead though as he is somewhat flat and uninteresting. In fact I'm not really interested in any of the characters at this point but it's early enough. The main hook though is the world itself and the show does a well enough job setting that up.
My main problem with the episodes comes with the direction of some of these stylized closeup shots (as seen directly above). The one with pages flying around Chakuro is not only heavy-handed but distracting. It really breaks immersion and draws too much attention to itself through the strong colors and haze outline. It's kind of shoujo-esque and stands in stark contrast to the rest of the show.
The background art is neat as there's a texture to the art from the paper used to make it. That style does make it hard to reconcile the character animation with the backgrounds but the photography director and composition team do a well enough job. It reminds me of Yoshihiro Sekiya but not as extreme. The character animation was surprisingly stiff and limited considering the production values surrounding the rest of the show. It looks good enough though.
I'm still wading through the piles of garbage that is this season but this is definitely intriguing.

Well, all caught up now. Kind of a dumb name. But better than Super Saiyan Blue I suppose. Regardless, I could've sworn the trigger for Super Saiyan 3 was to find your inner strength and call it out. Although I guess this just works on a Godly scale since not even some of them can achieve such a state. At this point though there are two people who can stand up to the Gods if need be. Kinda want to see this arc hurry up and finish so we can see what happens after it now that the big power up has officially been shown off.

HappinessCharge wasn't enough for you!?

I could never turn away Precure. Unless it's Dokidoki or Smile. I didn't like them all that much. When I said that though, I was kinda thinking more in the lines of a Precure mixed with Pripara kinda thing. Granted sure there was Suite which mixed it with music, but I was thinking more of idol themes specifically for some reason.

MC guy seemed like a pretty conventional anime male lead to me though. Would fit right in at a high school setting

Watching the Space Patrol Luluco dub since it got uploaded to VRV tonight. The actress Funimation picked to fill in for Rachelle Heger as Sucy does a pretty damn good impression of her.

Can you even say it's the same 'universe' when one is a medieval dark fantasy and the other set in modern times?

*shrug* It's probably up to interpretation, I just take it as one occurs reeeaaallly far in the past, and the other hundreds of years after. They don't have to be though. Could just be shared concept.

But that's not the case. The different Garo shows don't even take place in the same worlds.

I meant universe like... the final fantasy games all take place in the same universe.

obviously the similarities are gonna be slim if one takes place in a medieval era and the other one has a talking motorcycle
but it could have been like, the bad guy from the first one has ties to the bad guy in this new one

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"

Well Im glad the anime kept the best water scenes with Touta-nii in and the BL'ish moments. Kuromaru was always one of the best male characters in the early parts of the manga, and I guess the character I have to get behind since Santa wont be in this. Hopefully the anime makes them closer than just bros.

Kuromaru is literally not male

I mean, you're Captain Garo so what do I know, but I don't see anything truly preventing them from all loosely happening in the same world, at least the anime stuff. (I've never seen the live action series.)

The first is in the middle ages, the second in Japan, and the third in modern times. They're all so far apart location and time wise that it feels like they could occur in the same world. That said, I don't think it really matters whether you believe they are in the same world or not, since they don't refer to one another anyway, like I said above.

Final Fantasy is probably the best way to look at it yeah.

final fantasy games all take place in separate universes with callbacks to existing things from the other games in the series.

only connected games are x to x-2 and the xiii series, also the ff7 spinoffs. xiv for example borrows a bunch of stuff from all the games, but molds it to fit into its world. there's also a few characters that are canonically the same entity and travel between games via the interdimensional rift

i will support the theory that mass effect and 13-2 take place in the same universe though, how else did they get the N7 armor!

So, I don't think any of this matters much because, yeah none of the games directly connect outside of those with recognizable sequels, X, X-2 or XIII, XIII-2 etc. so it's all kinda pointless....

That said, I think it's a bit like Zelda was considered before the timeline 'reveal' where, yeah you can totally pretend or believe these connect when there's no obvious through line outside of characters with similar names and features. Like, each game takes place hundreds of years apart. So it's all on the same planet, but civilizations have begun, prospered, collapsed and eventually fallen in that span that things are drastically different.

Remember the hackneyed attempt that Square tried to tie FF VII and FF X through the sequel to X that no one likes?

This is a thing? I only just played FF X (on last boss and can never seem to find the drive or the time to finish it) and have never touched X-2. Did they really try and connect it to 7?

What links Zelda together is that it always takes place in the same region with similar landmarks and geography. So if you want to you could put it together that maybe they take place in the same world in different eras.

Garo is literally just the concept of Makai Knights recycled for whatever setting they want to do. The TV shows apparently have a deep ongoing mythology and continuity of some sort. The anime shows are just stand alone spinoffs. You cannot honestly make any sort of argument that they take place in the same world when one is a fantasy world that isn't our world with its own history and kingdoms which don't exist, and another is literally period Japan with historical figures, and another is a modern city which again is clearly not our world.

One of the characters in your group is called Shinra and they imply that he traveled to the planet where FF VII takes place and founded the Shinra Company

There's nothing to say they are in the same universe, and nothing to say they aren't. Sure one's in Feudal Japan, and another in Medeival Kingdom land with made up countries, but media makes up tons of countries that don't exist and mixes them with one's that do. I already admitted it didn't even matter in the grand scheme of things, so I feel like we're arguing semantics. lol. And as dickroach put it he meant same universe as in Final Fantasy, lose ideas/characters/mechanics all fitting together for similar story outings.

That's weeeeiiirrrdddd.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Garo takes place in the same continuity as Space Dandy and Rick and Morty.

Maybe all anime everywhere takes place in the same world. Eromanga is happening right alongside Dragon Ball Z. The characters just live in a country that's speciesist against the anthropomorphic animals so that's why we never see any. And Blue Gender occurs like just five years after Eromanga's conclusion
Meaning every modern anime ever ultimately truly ends with characters dying terribly from an eventually and horrible bug invasion or something.

I'm intrigues by Children of the Whales, but it's a manga adaptation of a 10 volumes manga and it's only 12 episodes, so I'm also kinda wary.

I'll probably still check it out, but I wouldn't expect another SSY.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 - END

I saw this coming a mile off, infact from the very first episode they began this I could tell what was up
(Camera work always focusing on Mirai from Mari's perspective, the lack of interaction between Yuuki and her.)
but even if I was dissatisfied with how it was handled in the first episode, I guess there was enough hints and nudges to know what the play was and the tradeoff for the finale made up for it (I do wonder how many of those who were watching the show at the time did catch on to it) It did get me teary eyed multiple times and the successive things that
Yuuki left behind. Especially that text message he left for Mirai
was what really got me.

I wasn't sure how I would feel about this show,
I dislike how the death of Yuuki was handled as a is he, isn't he, is he (Infact I burst out laughing when he was "alive" again)
but for a show that I thought would play it safe, it was anything but that. What was a less cynical view towards a disaster than what I'm use to seeing, it starts off as a generic disaster show with some cut corners but then hits an emotional beat towards the end and the overall narrative and characters really moved me and that was something I wasn't expecting when I first jumped on. I'm still not entirely sure if it all felt a little cheap and manipulative by the finale but it left an impression on me.
You will be missed Yuuki :(
7/10

Now I need to watch something upbeat and happy because this is a terrible way to start my day!

Made in Abyss - Episode 11-13 (End)

I'm just going to come out and get the icky stuff out of the way. For all the great attention to detail, gorgeous backgrounds, powerful music, and meticulous direction, there's something about some parts of the material which I really find gross. It's not just innocent nudity or violence/suffering that shows how dangerous the world it. There's something about the intent that feels like it goes beyond that into something voyeuristic and somewhat sick. There isn't enough of it to turn me off from another season, but it's very distasteful to have in what is otherwise a really well produced work.

So errr, yeah I was wrong about how this couldn't possible end on a satisfying note since the manga isn't complete. They managed to find a really good point to cap the season off, while teasing just enough of what is to come. Kinema Citrus did a fantastic job. The mangaka though... might need some professional help up there.

I really like Made in Abyss overall, but you are right to put your finger on troublesome aspects of the material. The anime toned them down somewhat from the manga, which has a truly distasteful affection for showing underage nipples, but didn't remove them. Someone was saying earlier in the thread that the incomplete ending was what disqualified this from being considered a "prestige anime". My thoughts run close to yours on how well the ending worked emotionally, so I would disagree with that. The biggest obstacle to Made in Abyss being considered "prestige" is how it flirts with lolicon fantasies.
