New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

Just got Terra Mystica and its expansion for my birthday! I'm very happy with it, box content feels very solid and now I got hold of the board and game rules it looks like the game is very interesting at least. But I still feel like they could have done better on graphical design, some stuff is very obtuse when playing the first time, but I guess they want to invoke that classic 80s/90s fantasy.

What is an affordable price? I see quite a few completed listings on eBay that ended at around $30. I know that's like twice MSRP, but it is OOP, so that's to be expected.

And honestly, for as good as it is, and as unlikely that it's ever coming back to print, $30 isn't bad. It was a steal at the $12 I paid when we were all freaking out about the licenses expiring... but honestly if I played it for the first time today now that it is OOP I would probably be ok throwing down $30 for it. If it turns out it isn't for OP he can feel pretty safe in being able to flip it back out for little to no loss.

Picked up Patchwork and Caverna: Cave vs Cave a couple days ago. Can't stop playing Patchwork with the gf though, so I don't know when I'll get to CvC.

Straight up, if you and the SO love Tetris, you gotta get Patchwork. I realise now that I own too man Uwe Rosenberg games.

Patchwork is indeed high quality.

I’ve been playing a bit of agricola family edition lately... with the family. It actually works really well once everyone understands they need a food source. Also we coloured one of the sheep green so the youngest loves it.

If you love Tetris, I will get you to try Feast for Odin some day. SOME DAY!

In other news, Tortuga 1667 worked surprisingly well with 3 players. The game came down to the wire, but unfortunately I got myself stuck in a standoff as governor of Tortuga, and the Dutch player ended the game before either of us could sway the balance. Interestingly, the French player had been ahead something like 5-2 and 6-2 at various points.

Between amost every first ks reviewer/player giving it a glowing review and the constant "heres another expansion with more stuff for $10" I can totally see why this ks continues to go crazy. Combine that with the "this will NEVER be sold in stores" and it truly creates the perfect storm of can't miss out on ANY of this content.

Ended up bringing my very old copy of Betrayal at House on the Hill that I kind of forgot I had for game night this week. I think it was the longest game of that I've ever played. By the end we only had 3 or 4 tiles left unused. It was really fun, though. Definitely good for October! Luckily I ended up being the traitor, which worked out well since no one else had played the game before. The heroes would have won pretty handily too, since I was trapped in the basement with seemingly no way out. However, I found a crystal ball earlier in the game that allowed me to pick any tile that I wanted when exploring. Made for a pretty climatic ending where the evil cannibal ended up prevailing.

We also played Legendary Marvel, with the Guardians of the Galaxy expansion. Don't think I was a big fan of that expansion. It adds too much complication to the game, when one of the main reasons I was so drawn into it is that it is pretty simple and can be quick. The Guardians themselves have very little of the two main resources you use throughout the game, and instead give you shards of infinity gems that you can use as power. You also get to keep them between turns. It sounds useful, but as I said, I liked Marvel because it is relatively simple. We fought against Thanos and the game lasted too long, and we also didn't make a dent against him. We had a first time player too, and I just can't help but feel that was the worst possible intro to the game.

We ended the night with a couple rounds of 5-minute Dungeon. That game is a perfect ender for a night. Kudos to who ever mentioned it on here, I looked it up and bought it instantly knowing it would be a hit with my group.

First things first, I need to get into Arkham Horror LCG (only have the base set for now). But how's this for a long-term acquisition plan for 2p coop boardgaming? (no specific order)

- Gloomhaven (maybe I should pick it up first before the 2nd reprint coming soon goes OOP?) for tactical dungeon-crawling
- Mage Knight for fantasy strategy
- Robinson Crusoe for coop survival

I'm also eyeing 7th Continent KS because I love exploration. But the number of expansions as addons is giving me pause and making me hesitate. I don't want to feel like I'd miss out on them forever if I don't pick them up, but the money adds up pretty fast too. Hmmm.

Both Gloomhaven and Robinson Crusoe are solid and will give you many hours of playtime. If you can, I do recommend the new edition of Robinson Crusoe (clearer rules and card text) and the 2nd Edition of Gloomhaven (better HP/XP dials, some nerfed player cards though that's not as urgent).

My wife enjoyed BarenPark and I like it too even if it's on a simplistic side. I don't know if you need Patchwork and BarenPark though. If you want to move up to more complicate, I would say try Cottage Garden or make a leap and go for A Feast for Odin. My wife said she is willing to learn Feast but I am sort of terrify at the prospect of teaching her that game.

The pre-order is for the 1.5 base game alone, which has been upgraded from the previous 1.0 release in the old Kickstarter and includes, among other things, a new quarry monster.

There weren't any stretch goals per se, like you find in a lot of other KS. Instead, this was actually done via the optional Gambler's Box which was an additional $100 (before we knew what was even going to be in it). The Gambler's Box isn't till wave 3 (late 2018?), but it's likely that it'll come to the KDM shop, though probably more than $100.

Edit: Instead of charging the full $400 MSRP and adding free stretch goals on top, Poots opted to reduce the base game price as much as possible.

For teaching Feast, I'd suggest starting with a basic overview of the phases in order until you reach the action phase. Also explain the "8 surrounding spaces to unlock bonus tiles" thing, and the basic blue/green placement rules.

At that point, on your first game you can honestly just dive straight in and start explaining actions as they're randomly picked. Or, you can give very brief overviews of the action space categories ("This one relates to boats, this one relates to food, etc.) Just encourage picking random actions. If she picks an impossible action, she'll learn why it's impossible and can pick something else instead.

After doing maybe one or two rounds of that, she'll probably have a good grasp on the basics and you can just go from there (*edit* Or, restart the game since 2 rounds go pretty quickly.). Things start clicking pretty readily after that. Just keep the occupation card reference handy for them to use because some symbols on the cards aren't 100% self-explanatory.

I wouldn't worry about her knowing everything the first game, because Feast for Odin is definitely a game where new players should lose badly anyway if the other player is remotely experienced and trying to win. :p Part of the fun is how much you improve with repeated plays.

Shit, 4 days left for 7th Continent. Has anyone actually played it here? Is it as good as this stupid amount of hype is making it out to be, or is it blow out of proportion?

I would tell anyone to buy it frankly :p

All 3 are worth getting, if you're thinking of getting 7th continent now is the time because while it does add up fast who knows when/if you'll be able to get the full thing again.

anyone have any thoughts if the 7th CONTINENT add on expansions are worth it?

or see any word if they have any plans to keep the expansions stocked on their store for a while after? as far as I can tell they don't seem to, at last with the main game, so I imagine it is the same for the expansions.

I am going to seriously look at the game tomorrow, but it's something that is to my interest, and I can justify it to some degree by the simple fact that it likely will hold its value well.

but I am not sure I want to put down $250 or so for everything when i am not even sure if i want to spend $150 or so on a single board game I have never played.

I will at least try the print and play tomorrow.

I went to a game club yesterday. To see the full awesomeness of the thing let's say I have little social life because of a history of pretty severe social anxiety.
And it was fun... and the people were nice... Pretty satisfied with myself there.

Just a little down with the games played, between some weak games and others that could have been better explained. Nothing struck as must have except one. I realize now that funnily the game part is not that important in this type of night. I missed human beings.

So...
2x Fuji Flush
1x Mysterium
1x Shadow Hunters
1x Celestia
3x The Game

pic3086849.jpg
pic2601683.jpg
pic1215982.jpg
pic2577990.jpg
pic2405167.jpg

- Fuji Flush was Uno but with some more subtle rules and a funky turn order. Not impressed but nice as a quick aperitive game.
- Mysterium was largely uninteresting, maybe because I played it with strangers.
- Shadow Hunters was pretty great as it was my first real hidden faction game but I evidently couldn't pull as much players outside of these nights.
- Celestia was largely uninteresting and boring, but I suspect it's because it's in fact pretty uninteresting and boring.
- The Game is a sort of cooperative solitary and it was really fun for what it is, but nothing groundbreaking when you think about it.

Now there is this other game club that takes place on two other days of the week. Will I have the courage to go out of my house ? Fuck my brain.
And then if I keep at it there is a whole world of things to do BG-wise where I live. At the end of October it seems like some associations got together to make a horror week with events at different places / cafes each days of the week.

.

After two years of owning it I finally got my copy to the table last night as well and I too was the traitor!

Unfortunately my wife and friends flubbed their survival rules and I had no way of knowing till the end. They argued it wouldn't have made a difference, but they were taking my monsters off the board one by one, when they shouldn't have been taking them off the board at all. Haunt 11:
they had a four part exorcism to do to banish my specters, but they were treating like each of the four parts was in itself an exorcism that banished a specter and once they completed all four they succeeded in winning. Traitor rules only said if the heroes completed "an exorcism" specters were banished
.

A bit anticlimactic as a result.

Also, maybe not really their fault, alcohol was involved.

Yeah, the many many expansions is what's holding me back right now. I'll have to look into the game in more detail as well. Maybe at most I'll just get the new big xpac and the old 3 main xpacs.

Just got an email saying my copy of Kingdom: Death 1.5 has shipped! I'm pretty excited! This game, along with the DC Deck Builder and Arkham Horror LCG, got me and my friend pretty hardcore into boardgaming at the start of this year. Time to see how hardcore we are into it, I suppose? Kinda jumped head first into a pretty heavy game now that I'm looking back at it. Lots of minis to put together.

Speaking of painting and minis, do you guys have any advice for me and my buddy? I have very limited experience in putting together and painting minis (back in highschool I briefly tried to get into Warhammer 40k with some friends. I think we each only ended up buying the starter set with some Space Marines and Orks and then one small little blister each of some other races.) and my friend has no experience whatsoever. Maybe any ideas on some cheap figures to buy to help us practice so we don't screw up our Kingdom Death models?

Buy this and and this if you're brand new to it all. While Bones are a bit different to paint (mostly because of the base coat + primer stuff), the process and skills you develop will be the same.

There are a ton of resources out on Youtube to help learn the basic order to do things, as well as various techniques. Also, a lot of the people in the Miniature Gaming thread would be happy to answer any questions.

As for cheap minis, I've seen the Reaper Bones ones mentioned, and the D&D minis don't seem to be that costly either. I've been painting for about a year, and have just been using my boardgaming minis (Mansions of Madness, Descent, and 7th Continent so far). If you're truly unhappy with a paint job, you can always strip the paint (assuming you haven't applied any varnish yet).

Thanks for the heads up on Kingdom Death: Monster being back up for pre-order on Backerkit. Think I'm going to have to dive in. I might play it solo, though.

Kingdom Death Monster and (much later) the Arkham Horror LCG was what sorta got me back into board games too actually. Still have the 1.0 box sitting underneath my bed lol just backed it since Poots at the time was a fellow NYCer and the Dung Beetle Knight is pretty much the Dunbine.

I get social anxiety Too, games are a good way to socialise as there's structure you can predict and less pressure to think of something interesting to say or maintain conversation. Good on you for putting yourself out there.

Just did a game day at a friend's. Played Small world for the first time and dug it, fun little gateway game.
Did another round of Glass Road and I'm really getting into it. It has that lovely 'window shopping' element from Caverna whereby between your turn you can look at all the stuff available to buy but its much faster paced then Caverna. I might have to pick up my own copy.

For pledge prices it was 50$ rise for the GC. Addon chests are 150$ so it wont be under 150 on the store. Its still incredible price concidering the amount of stuff in it. But for somebody with core, it will be difficult to decide between that and gorm+sunstalker

Yup, lol.

I remember when I was a kid I had some books similar choose your own adventure but you actually had hp and rolled dice.

Recently just started playing D&D as well. DM our first adventure, had a blast.

bleh... I wish i knew more people locally that wanted to buy/trade games.

I want to trim my collection, but shipping is expensive.

oh well a few of them likely would be worth it to move even if shipping will cost quite a bit.

like I think I want to sell my this war of mine board game with all of the kickstarter bonues and expansions as I should be able to net around $200 for that even if the base game has been played a few times.

I think I would enjoy THE 7th CONTINENT more, and if I really miss this war of mine I don't think it would bother me much to just get the base game again down the line.

I suppose I could a listing up on craigslist or something :/

Would like to pick this game and try it with the wife:

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/10/13/your-place-in-the-story/

An RPG experience without a need for a DM could be interesting.

*adds to wishlist*

looks like it is around $71.50 on amazon which i think is less than the kickstarter amount was.

That’s just the base game. The kickstarter lightbringer pledge has a shitload of exclusive content. Cross compatibility with Zombicide Black Plague being a major one, but the extra exclusive heroes and monsters are a major incentive as well.

I backed the original KS and played it a few times since I got it. It is good and very unique compare to other games on the market. I was actually kind of worry about the game but I am glad that they delayed and put out polish product. (Unlike many KS games where the game is delayed and you still end up with mediocre rules). That said the game can be repetitive in the same way TIME Stories is but the nice thing about 7th Continent is that the game has a lot of cards so the random stuffs can vary from game to game. That said you are still going through the same thing again and again.

If you like this type of game then it is a good deal with a lot of contents. I know a lot of people balk at all the expansions but with just the core you get enough stuffs that will last you for a long time.

I wouldn't normally balk at the expansions. I would just buy the base game and major expansion and call it good and if I liked it buy the other expansions later.

but with the game potentially not getting another print run after this, and things being potentially sold out forever after this, it makes it a lot harder whether I want to just blindly buy the expansions.

I am leaning towards doing it, under the assumption that they will hold their value if not go up in price if they really don't do more printings.

I seriously doubt that they would not run another Kickstarter if there is a demand. I really understand the must have everything mentally because I used to suffer from that, but I found that if you don't even use the stuffs why does it matter if you have it or not. After backing three CMON games I learned to not care about all the junks that are not really needed. There are three original expansions and I don't know how many people actually even finished the three that are in the core box.

I imagine there is a decent chance they run another one, especially since given how many copies they are selling they are likely making decent money off of it. but at the very least they won't commit to running another one, and I could easily see them wanting to move onto a new game as well.

we will see. I still have a bit of time to think about it.
