Netflix plans to spend $8 billion to make its library 50 percent original by 2018

This. A 10 episode season of Game of thrones cost $100 million. They paid Dave Chappelle $60 million for 3 comedy specials. WTF! They need to start investing in some huge series. Oh, and make it a weekly show instead of giving you everything at once. I think the whole binge watch thing is bad business.

Maybe they could fund a Sharpe series worth a damn.

Netflix released one of the best movies of the year. I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. Everyone should watch it.

The biggest issue is they can't even market all this stuff. It seems to be multiple original series or movie releases a week, many of which come out with no marketing or mention whatsoever. I have no idea what like 70% of this stuff even is, only some of it gets any internet hype at all. They are showing so much at us, but does anyone even know that lot of this even exists?

I noticed this too, the reboot of One day at a time is great, but have not seen one commercial for it

I would love that. Not enough Canadian sci-fi on air right now.

RIP Dark Matter

See, never even heard of this. You used to know every Netflix movie or show coming, they got advertised properly, now they just are putting out stuff weekly and its a crap shoot of discovering stuff now

They are massively in debt their subscriber base doesn’t cover it.

This, I think, is the end of Netflix. They are facing competition at all sides from people who make better content more consistently. Disney is releasing their own service soon, Amazon is investing heavily, HBOs service already offers better content but less variety, Hulu has the tv crowd and there is also a value perception with Netflix. They are piling on the debt at their current pricing structure. They really need to be charging around $20 a month but will people think the service is worth that when Disney and others pull out? I don’t think so.

Netflix is worth $20 to me ...... their content is far better than anything those other channels put out.

Amazon has yet to pull me in with a big show, and yeah i like game of thrones, but im not paying $20 a month for it, Hulu is ok, but i just kind of pass everything and don't find much i want.

Netflix has something that interests me in some way almost weekly, and a ton of stuff i haven't caught up on. If netflix was REALLY smart, Save some of that money they are spending on all these tv shows, and buy up the rights to the NFL, Direct TV has held that shit for too long.

I agree Netflix's advertising strategy is weird, but their confidence makes it pretty clear they're happy with the metrics for their new movies.

Plus I just check the Wikipedia page for Originals every week to see what's coming out. It ain't hard.

That's not a solid way to get people to watch your programming. People are not gonna be reading a site for lists of releases to then go research on their own. Marketing has to be in your face.

Heck if you follow their own facebook page, a large chunk of these originals don't even get a mention when released on it.

I really do end up liking most of their original series. Even the shitty ones. Movies are usually hit or miss for me though. I'm all for Netflix going all in on original content, Mindhunter and The Babysitter were both awesome recently.

Every Netflix thread....they have horrible content and there's nothing worth watching. Less hyperbole please. Expand your horizons and check out their international content and documentaries.

Also for those of you asking for Hollywood movies and older classic shows. Don't blame Netflix. The studios and network are the ones pulling their content off and starting their platform. Wait a couple years for them to fail and Netflix will have their content back again.

THIS. Of course plenty of their Originals are dogshit but that's vastly outweighed by the great, diverse content if you actually dig in and take a look.

I don’t think it matters when they use their algorithms to surface movies their data tells them viewers will watch.

I don’t remember the last time I’ve honestly watched Netflix for anything other than their original stuff at this point but I haven’t been able to get through one of their movies. Really enjoying the TV output though.

So bummed that they killed videostores, then changed their model. Filmstruck can't come to Canada soon enough.

They didn't change their model, greedy content providers raising licensing fees and removing content for their own library services have forced Netflix to invest more in original content

Yep they need a new interface. A new release section as well as "coming soon" need to front center.

It's a bit premature to say this is the end of Netflix. Investors certainly don't agree. Taking on debt is a valid strategy to drive growth. It's served Amazon well, and to date, it's serving Netflix well. Just today, they announced that they smashed their own new subscriber projections.

Netflix has been ahead of the curve and made very smart pivots to get where they are now. I would not bet against them.

They changed their model because they foresaw the present environment. Studios are trying to start their own services and not sharing their content in order to draw subscribers to their exclusives. It's a mess, but it's not Netflix's fault.

HBO is way more than game of thrones. The wire, their monthly rotation of movies are usually higher quality than what netflix has, their documentaries are usually better, last week tonight is amazing, Oz, Ladies Man, Vice principles, Curb your Enthusiasm, Veep, basically HBO does everything Netflix is trying to do. Their shoes are all well written and very high quality with good acting performances.

Investors are actually really divided. There are plenty of people on the short side. Also the market over values growth which Netflix has a ton of by expanding into different countries. A perfect example of how the market over values growth is Tesals current market cap. Anyways Netflix has a growing short interest and I certainly wouldn't buy now. Way too many questions not enough answers at this point. The quality of non Netflix shows that Netflix carries is absolutely abysmal. My gf has Netflix and I rarely use it but when I do it's just tons of crap (except some of the original stuff). Disney is a bargain comparitively.

If it means keeping the same amount of old films and tv, I'm happy about the decision.

There isn't a lot of money in the long run in being the online equivalent of Blockbuster. Every piece of original content they make is fully theirs and will continue to generate a return.

The people in charge have been making the right moves over and over. This will pay off as well.

People harping about debt don’t know what they are talking about.

Might have missed mention of it, but Siege at Jadotville was very good. I'd only put Beasts over it in terms of their original films.

I hope they increase 4k HDR content and let me see how much of it they have before I sign up for it!

21.9 billion is their current long term debt load. That's a crap ton for a streaming service that charges 12/month. The only way that pays off is if their quality kicks up by quite a bit.

They couldn't be even if they wanted to. Competition for content is becoming far more fierce online. It's not feasible anymore.

Might be worth it to create some kind of Netflix only nerd talk show, where they talk about and review Netflix originals. At this point they come so fast with no build up and I'm not sure which of them are any good or worth exploring. Get one of the youtube nerds to come in and promote your shit for you, Netflix.

Sounds like you have a pretty adequate premise for a podcast.

Yeah they want to be hbo. Success not ruled by what production companies let them have.

I’d be curious to see the numbers of what has been the most successful for them. Stranger Things seemed to be the most universally mainstream: kids got a lot of media press, snl and talk show parodies, universally praised.

We are slowly not using it much at this point. I don't really like their original stuff past a few releases.

Blah.

For every good piece of content that Netflix produces they also seem to produce a dozen pieces of shit. I liked it better when Netflix only had a few shows and they put everything into it.

I can't watch some of my favorite older shows because Netflix is making so much original content that I don't care about. If I want to watch Chuck, or Scrubs, or Fringe I'm screwed. But I can watch a ton of Netflix originals that I never asked for.
