New Fall Update for Xbox One starting to roll out today

I meant settings on the Xbox, not your TV.
Trued that and made no difference switch around every setting even reset my system to factory no change.

And my sons system is exactly the same issue. With different equipment but again no HDR.

All was great before this update I’m still baffled they ignored mine and many others reports of this issue. Probably because our preview program post got washed away by a few idiots who post in the preview program forums like it’s their own personal Gaf.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I may be wrong, but I think it's because it's downloading and installing game at the same time so it can slow down if a game has lots of small files.

It's this exactly. It installs as it downloads and becomes a bandwidth thing on the hard drive itself.

They take this approach vs downloading the whole thing then installing at the end like PS4 does.

It does almost look like the Xbox One HDR/SDR auto-select isn't working correctly, I have no way of checking HDR until my Scorpio turns up but automatic settings have always been off for me on the Xbox.

Something that seemed to improve it for me was to go into Display & Sound > Advanced Video Settings > TV Connection and change that from Auto to HDMI. It seems that on auto it was sending out a DVI compatible signal rather HDMI.

It's disappointing that there isn't a HDR on/off setting on the hardware because you're inevitably going to get some mistakes on Auto with the range of hardware that you can connect to it. Ideally Auto would work perfectly irrelevant of the hardware you're using but that's never really going to happen.

Damn it.

I don't even watch that many blu rays, but I'm considering getting a standalone player.

Will see how the X fares in a few weeks and go based on that.

Have an KS8000 with HDR so will check tonight anyway and see what happens.

Can’t get 4k enabled properly manually and I had support tell me before that with 4k to always use auto as manual doesn’t work on many devices.

In the introduction video I saw a game background being fully displayed. However not for me. The background of my last played game is only displayed half and the lower part is just grey. Ugly. How do I remove that?

Settings>Personalization>My color & Background>Home & tile transparency.

You can make the bottom half partially transparent or remove it completely.

I just want to clarify, you said you don't have an HDR toggle in the settings, right? I have an option to disable HDR along with a host of other options in the advanced video settings. So, is that option just grayed out for you since your TV doesn't support it?

Right you cannot do anything with that setting in fact it isn’t there with auto detect and manual setting which I’ve been told not to use because it doesn’t work in all TVs you can’t even check it there

So far only Gears 4 as One X enhanced in the list, that is quite odd but I saw people talking about that earlier here I believe. I'm sure they will fix that.

The lack of an online friends icon on the main screen sucks, they should add that back in. Also don’t like that it keeps suggesting a waifu club in one of the ads. Can you turn off these suggestions? Apparently it’s the top club in my area... I don’t even watch anime. Guess I have to move.

Awesome that fixes one complaint

A month ago or so I read that MS was putting a feature in the dashboard that would be great for OLED tvs to combat/avoid IR or burn in. Is that in this?

It's the idle screen. It has micromovements across the screen when it's active. You can change how long it takes for it to appear in the settings.

So let's say I am on the home screen and I want to go for a drink, i leave and from there on it will activate? That is a damn nice thing by MS then. Many times when I go for a drink, toilet etc while gaming I always put it on a unused HDMI input so it activates the LG screensaver. Now I don't have to anymore.

Oh also, this fluent thing people speak of, I'm not really noticing it? I went to the store, settings, etc and it all seemed similar to me.

Press the menu button on the suggested item and an options menu will show up that allows you to say if you want more or less of a suggestion type.

A tiny bit weird to get used to but it is much faster and smoother that is for sure. I experienced one crash though in the store but I am sure these minor bugs will be fixed in time.

Right now it's basically the new Home and Guide (you see many fluid animations instead of stuff just disappearing and appearing).

Yeah, when I manually selected HDMI it dropped down to the lowest resolution but you can also manually select the output resolution. I have the original Xbox One so it's not compatible with 4K but it does allow me to manually select 1080p which fixed things for me.

There is, there is a tick box under Advanced Video settings that allows you to turn off HDR.
It will only show it to you if your TV is communicating that it is HDR10 compatible in the first place.

I've not tried any HDR content since I got the final update, but it is all looking good for me.

of the course of the preview I did have a couple of times where the HDR wasn't kicking in when it was turned on, I turned it off, hard reset then renabled it, which fixed the issue.

The washed out blacks on a UHD disc on a non HDR panel makes sense though, as code value 18 is essentially the blackest colour, whereas on on an SDR set it is 0, so the SDR set receives the value 18 and understands it as being grey.

Same. I tried to manually select HDMI and 4k but it tells me my Vizio doesnt support 4k (which it does). Auto select works fine. Maybe its color mapping to DVI? Who knows, but its very annoying.

You can disable HDR on the hardware.

Settings - Display & Sound - Video Output - Advanced Video Settings - Allow HDR (Yes/No)

that white background you must hate your backlight on your tv that cant be good long term.

How mine is set as it was before this update.

They messed something up and have yet to fix it period.

That is expected behavior for TV that doesn't know what to do with the HDR10 info.

Try changing between 24 and 30 bit colour with a hard reboot after each change, see if iether of those work better,

1, they are LEDs, which have a huge lifespan
2. They are locally dimmed, so they are illuminated all the time anyway
3. The TV cuts back on overall brightness to stop the LEDs burning out when they are over a larger area.

It's the new idle screen.

Off topic, we need to stop using the term "burn in" in this case. OLED's get image retention, it's not damaging to your tv and you really need to really abuse your TV to get it. I say this as a 15 year Plasma users, who couldn't get burn in on my old Panasonic no matter what I did to it.

Good to know, I was surprised that it was suggested that there wasn't a manual option. Ideally people won't even need to bother with that as it'll all be dealt with automatically but it is always best to have manual options there for the occasional setup that will inevitably have issues with the auto settings.

I don't get any HDR options at the moment due to owning the Sunset Overdrive console rather than an update S version. I am hoping that when my X turns up I'll just be able to connect my external HDD before switching it on and it'll all sort itself out for me.

in this last update it actually popped up after the update and told me to change some settings, so if you have done a settings backup and it's taken across your 1080p settings it will identify you are actually connected to a 4k TV and sort itself out.

Ultimately I think that some of the issues highlighted here are down to HDR as a feature and as a format is a total mess.
You've got people wondering why their image looks weird when the TV manufacturer has said it supports HDR (but actually doesn't meet any of the poorly enforced standards)

You've then got other people such as the user here, who has bought UHD disc for the 4K image, but the format also includes HDR by default, which your 4K TV may not support at all.

The strange this is that it'll be nice to be up and running straight but I am sort of going to miss all that messing around with settings with a new console. I know it's not a true new generation of consoles but there is always about new stuff, as long is it does all work properly when you are setting it up yourself.

I had no intention of upgrading to a 4K/HDR for two or three years for the exact reasons that you mention and also because a new TV is pretty much a long term investment and I thought the advantages of waiting that length of time would make a far better return for the money I spent than waiting the amount of time when I upgraded to 1080p.

the only reason I have a 4K/HDR is because my friend was selling his 50" Sony XE70/X70E (USA) for £200 as he was upgrading to a really good set and £200 makes it a much shorter term investment for me even though it's nowhere near a top end panel.

It would almost have been stupid not to have paid £200 for it but it's a clear upgrade over my previous 40" bedroom TV and it rates pretty well on rtings.com as a set and I can still upgrade 2 or 3 years down exactly as I planned to without really losing out.

It's been fan absolute game changer on the Pro and I wouldn't even be considering a Xbox One X let alone ordering one if I didn't get that screen at that price simply because our Xbox doesn't get used that much but I do want to play the games that I do enjoy at 4K in HDR and I get a UHD player included. I would have happily gone for the Xbox One S UHD player but that obviously doesn't support 4K gaming.

I have saved a lot of money on a TV with an RRP of £700 (I know you can get it cheaper than that) but I've obviously spent what I've saved to buy the X.

Makes no difference I’ve tried all that stuff I’ve been trouble shooting this for months while they ignored it things were just fine in last dash board.

I was joking about the white background it’s just super friggin bright.

Quite an impressive improvement. I remember reading when the update was in beta and rolled out. So much negativity. Glad its a solid update.

If people have not already done so, don't forget to change your DNS settings too.

Outside of a few issues, this dash is super quick. Needs some UI tweaks but it's a good one.

I think it's rubbish so far. What have they done to the home screen? The main font which was previously modern is now thick and clunky. The icons along the side that were useful are now gone which means I have to now press the guide to see if I have notifications etc.

The spacing of the suggestions in the carousel is a mess and the new blue focus / glow looks like I have accessibility settings enabled.

It's somehow removed content from the homepage whilst appearing more cluttered?

Im with you here man, its nonsense. If there is anything else I can do to help let me know, otherwise im most likely also going to buy an external 4k bluray player to get the correct color output. Let me know.
