Restaurant Recommendations for Montreal?

Howdy GAF - I'm heading back to Montreal for the first time in years and I'm wondering if there any restaurants you all feel strongly about visiting?

I second Joe Beef. One of my favorite meals ever.

Le Pied de Cochon

Is L'Express still good for classic French bistro fare?

For a quick snack, first go on Fairmount avenue and go grab some delicious homemade gnocchi at Drogheria Fine. Once you're done, only a few steps from there, go get some of the best ice cream ever at Kem Coba.

Thank me later.

La Banquise is low-grade poutine only popular cause it's opened during the early hours. Go to a place like Patati-Patata on St-Laurent instead. Very small joint but their poutine is very good for Montreal standard with their wine based gravy.

Uniburger for Montreal style In-N-Out. Orange Julep is nothing special but is a pretty popular Montreal landmark.

Don't know the name of the place but there is at least one good crepe restaurant in Old Montreal (the street with the cobblestone). Highly recommend getting crepes somewhere in Montreal.

Foiegwa

The best brunch hot spot right now, deservedly so. The food is so good here, make sure to try the chicken waffles.

La Petite Adresse is also good.

You're absolutely right. If OP is looking for regular poutine, he could go almost anywhere else. And if he's looking for a poutine that's different, I suggest he goes across the street from La Banquise to Ma Poule Mouillée (a Portuguese chicken joint) and get their Portuguese poutine, topped with chicken, chorizo and hot sauce. It is the best poutine around!

Oh yeah how could I forget! Rotisserie Romados is the other popular place for portugese chicken (I think the chef of la poule mouillée used to work there or something before starting his own joint). Can’t go wrong either way!

Sumac, Satay Brothers, Sparrow, Magpie, Maison Publique, Nouveau Palais, Ice House, Dépanneur le Pick Up, Samcha, Patati Patata

Higher end: Toqué, Le Club Chasse et Pêche, Milos Restaurant, Nora Gray, Park Sushi, Pharos.

Fairmount or St.Viateur Bagel

Kem Coba or Le Petit Dep for Ice cream

I'd mention the trifecta of Joe Beef, Le Vin Papillon, and Liverpool House but you'll need reservations.

I recommend Joe Beef like others have mentioned.

Get the Dinr app, OP, so you can see if you can squeeze in at a table at places that are normally sold out.

I think all of the Portuguese-chicken chefs in the city have worked at Romados at one time or another ;)

Pied de Couchon and Schwartz are the two places I go to every time I go to Montreal.

Joe Beef is pretty good too.

Got back from a vacation to Montréal a month ago. I highly recommend Olive and Gourmando's for a nice lunch place and that would be my top pick to go back to. The paninis were extraordinary.

Other recommendations include Pizzeria dei Compari for amazing pizza and the best caesar salad I've ever had, Viateur Bagel and Cafe for a lovely breakfast experience, and if you're looking for a nice place to drink a cup of tea, Maison de thé Camellia Sinensis in the Latin Quarter was beautiful.

Update: just getting back from Montreal. It’s just as great as I remember it. Unfortunately, we didn’t stay as long as initially planned and were super busy the whole time so I didn’t get to plan out the eating as much as I wanted to. We went to the Korean place in the Eaton Center on one of the days and then Brit and Chips on the other. Brit and Chips was awesome and I highly recommend it. I had a curry fish pie and chips. I would’ve liked to go back to try the mushy peas, scotch eggs, and Irn Bru I hear so much about from UK GAF but oh well. Hopefully I’ll be heading back to the city sooner rather than later.

Sweet. Just saw this thread for the first time. Living here for a couple months for work so will check some of the places out.

Anyone want to have lunch sometime?

If you like breakfast, L'Avenue and La Grand-Mère Poule are amazing

Edit: oh didn't notice it was a post-bump. Oh well it'll serve the next person

Just seeing the restaurants I went to in Montreal a couple of years ago during a bachelor party that I wanted to recommend (Globe and Macaroni Bar) are closed.

EDIT: Restaurant Le Richmond is still open and I recall enjoying that...then again, I pretty much enjoyed any dining experience I had there. My first time trying Poutine was a revelation.

Missed this somehow but La Maison Kam Fung in Brossard is absolutely delectable, especially their dim sum.

You may have to call and see when they do dim sum. I think it's at least weekend mornings. It's not to be confused with Chinatown Kim Fung in Montreal proper, which it looks like from Google search results is sometimes referred to as Kam Fung. I haven't been there so I can't say if it's any good. I did just read a review from a Yelper saying "beware!!!! dead fish in tank while eating here and got severe food poisoning that day! do not eat here." Both restaurants have 3.5 stars. I can say for sure when we last went to the Brossard Kam Fung it was very delicious, and we had gone multiple times (coming up from Vermont).

The Biodome in Montreal is a fun place to check out, BTW.

I had the best meal of my life at Joe Beef. They gave us two options - order stuff off the menu, or let them create a 5-course meal for us. We opted for the latter, gave the waiter some general notes about what we like and don't like, and that was it. And then amazing food started arriving. Escargot potato soup (the best soup I've ever had), quail drenched in the creamiest béchamel you could imagine, cured rabbit, and it went on. Not to mention phenomenal wine. What a dope meal. I loved it.

Schwartz's is a must, as has already been mentioned.

Some other favs of mine:

  • Dunn's (second best to Schwartz's; similar food)
  • Boustan (Shwarma)
  • Mister Steer (Steak Burgers)
  • Cote St Luc BBQ (Chicken)
  • St-Viateur Bagels
  • Daou (Lebanese)
  • Kam Fung (Dim Sum)

So would that be the Kam Fung in Brossard or the Kim/Kam Fung in Chinatown? Just curious (see my post above.) :)

They're actually both good! I've been to both and both are quality.

Admittedly I get down to the China Town one more frequently when I'm in town just because going out to Brossard can be a pain. I was referring to the China Town location specifically though. I'm not sure if there's any relation but both are called Kam Fung (although some places refer to the China Town one as Kim Fung as well for whatever reason). I believe the China Town one is the older location.

The China Town restaurant does Dim Sum every day.

All that said, it's hard to go wrong with Chinese in general in Montreal which reminds me of one more recommendation:

Qing Hua Dumpling on Lincoln. All they do is dumplings and they have over 50 different kinds. Absolutely amazing.

That place is a gem. incredibly cheap as well.

What is it with you guys recommending Schwartz's so much? The quality has gone WAAAAY down in recent years. Apparently when the old owner sold a lot of the older kitchen and buying staff left, and with that all the contacts for the good briskets. Their meat has gotten to be so damn dry it's not even funny. You go asking for the fattiest cut of meat and it's barely what their medium used to be (and with this you want the fattiest cut ever).

La Banquise is also a tourist trap - there's a TON of better poutine joints in the city. It's basically the place where all the people from France bring their visiting friends, but it's really ordinary poutine.

Joe Beef is 100% legit though, as is Le Pied de Cochon.

And hey OP, you went to the Korean place in the Eaton Center. If I think you went where I think you went, their bibimbap is okay but it's really missing kimchi (that you have to buy separately, ugh) and fried eggs but otherwise it's good.

I mean there's a ton of restaurants in the city, and most of you guys are suggesting places that are chains (Boustan and Dunns? Really?)

Qiang Hua is great for dumplings, but I (personally) prefer Mai Xiang Yuan in Chinatown (that doesn't even have a sign, ha!). I find their dumplings have more flavor, but it's still pretty close. Qiang Hua is always a bit dirty, too :(

Na they have a sign, they moved location slightly and spruced up. Also an excellent place.

Which place in the Eaton center if you don't mind sharing a name?

I've always preferred Main Deli across the street from Shwartz. Really good if you ask for fatty smoked meat. Scwartz just seems so dry and underspiced by comparison.

They're the same. Chinatown is the original one.

I wouldn't really call it a tourist trap but it's true that there's better. It's mostly good because it's opened 24/7 and they offer tons of toppings.

Liverpool House and Nora Gray were fantastic. Au Pied De Cochon is good and worth an experience. Lawrence is an awesome brunch spot, too. L’Express is great French bistro faire. Kem Coba has stupid good ice cream.

Dieu Du Ciel is a great brewery to hang out at and have some drinks. I enjoyed Vices and Versa (beer bar) and Big in Japan Bar has an amazing atmosphere to it.
