Nintendo's success got Colin talking about gaming.

He’s the guy who wrote that legendary “ Vita is set to succeed” article on ign.

Who's that guy?

used to work at ign, then split off with some others to form kinda funny, then got pushed out of kinda funny because he frequently used his social media platforms to spew garbage which conflicted with kinda funny, and now he does youtube stuff about politics and history

he's one of those typical "the alt right is over there being crazy and the liberals are over there being crazy and here's me just sitting in the center as the only reasonable person in the room" except he's kind of an idiot and says a lot of insensitive bullshit

in a nutshell

According to that Colin guy the PS4 sold a million in 24 hours in the US, but the Wii U sold about a million in just over a month? Is that right? As that is quicker than the Switch right? I thought the Switch was performing better than the Wii U off the bat?!

He's right about PS4, but hilariously wrong about Wii U. Xbox 360 and PS3 outsold Wii U during its launch month in NA. Heck, Wii almost outsold it . Switch more than doubled Wii U's launch numbers. In March.

PS4 also needs context. It launched during the holidays and its rollout was staggered, so Sony was able to supply many more consoles to territories like the US early on. Nintendo is trying to become a more global company in comparison to their past, so they went for a worldwide Switch launch.

All other consoles launched in November in the hottest month for console sales because of Christmas. The Switch launched in March, so first month sales aren't comparable.

Nah. 2017 can easily be beaten. Pokemon/Animal Crossing/2D Mario would be enough.

In terms of sales? Or on a personal level? I think Odyssey is going to be the best selling Switch game to be honest.

I guess I was saying what would beat it for me. Infact F-Zero and Bayonetta 3 would probably beat 2017 for me, obviously sales of those two titles would be irrelevant but oh man having those games...

I did wonder about his Wii U figures.

And yeah the Switch would have sold far more at launch had they been available. I remember availability was terrible for some time. It's only recently that it's been better.

Not directly comparable.

The Wii U launched in a holiday with good supply. It actually looked like it was going to do well from the first two months. Then it fell off a cliff.

Switch launched in March, with less supply, but has remained in high demand for for nine months now.

This is all just US only too, Switch is far above Wii U now launch aligned worldwide, and may pass it LTD within a single year. It's selling far, far better overall, night and day better. If supply was there it would possibly have passed Wii U already.

In terms of sales. 2D Mario typically sells more than 3D Mario (although I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes with Odyssey), and Pokemon and Animal Crossing are sales juggernauts that could compete with Zelda/MK8D.

On a personal level, 2017 will probably be my favorite year for the Switch, unless we get Bayonetta 3, Fatal Frame 6, Animal Crossing, Odyssey 2, a new 3D Zelda and a new traditional Paper Mario all in the same year.

Regarding 2018 we should remember that Nintendo devs have not been working on 3DS titles for some time now, so the combined output of something like 15 to 20 games a year may start to show up.

Sprinkle in a few third party exclusives (Platinum), a Wii U port or two (Hyrule Warriors deluxe please) and the launch of the virtual console and 2018 will be stacked.
Switch success may have caught a lot of publishers off guard but there’s a lot of time between now and E3. I expect it to be a huge one for Nintendo.

According to NPD figures, the Switch was the fastest selling Nintendo device in their records at launch and has been the best selling hardware in the US for 4 of the 6 months it had been available (which these figures would now make 5 out of 7)

Is Smash Wii U getting a Switch port?

Many felt that way before the Switch launched, a quick port could beef up the lineup.

But now that 2017 is drawing to a close with no announcement of a port, I think it's unlikely. I am guessing they will be (or are already) working on a new, ground-up Smash game for the Switch.

Perhaps they have been working on it for a while already and that will be their big holiday game for next year. THAT would put 2018 on the map. Smash games have a notoriously long dev time but at least now there will be no 3DS version being made at the some time to slow the process.

There’s probably no beating Mario Odyssey and BOTW in the same year, but 2018 can still probably be good.
We didn’t know any of 2017’s line up until January and even then pokken and rabbids was announced in June.
Right now I think we have no dates for any switch game in 2017, likely focusing on Mario for now.
Maybe a December or January direct

Pokemon and Kirby/Yoshi/Smash (rerelease) for next year

Metroid in the third year and hopefully some third parties begin filling the void as Nintendo works on more stuff.

Funny story, when I pointed out that the Switch had been #1 5 out of the 7 months it's has been out, he downplayed it further saying the PS4 and One had been out for years, so that this was to be expected.

When I then pointed out that the Switch had not gone through its first Holiday yet and was released in March, I never got an answer.

Just reading his name I could see his face from all those vita launch videos and whatnot, though I never did get to read that classic article 'til now. Glad to know he's the same guy he was back then.

I wouldn't get worked up over that Colin shit. To be honest my initial reaction was that 2 million seemed low for 7 months in the US, even considering the stock shortage. He just vocalized it in an arrogant, Sony-centric way, but if you read the rest of his tweets he isn't really Switch hating.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own

We known its well above 2 million, that's just the last update Nintendo gave us

The thing is he’s not really wrong... he’s just got a shit way of putting it and is very camp Sony but he is not wrong. PS4 sold more then Switch in its opening months in the US and had a stronger YTD during the same pacing as the Switch.

Obviously supply constraints have something to do with that, so we will really never know what the switch’s true potential could’ve been but same could be said with Supply constraints with the PS4 just not as severe.

This exactly he’s just one of those nerdy type guys with the holier then thou attitude that just makes me wanna give him a fucking purple nurple, a swirly and kick his wheeled backpack.

Never count Nintendo out. Things were looking pretty dire with the collapse of late Wii sales and the failure of Wii U, but the Switch is knocking it out of the park. 10 to 12 million easily by the end of the holiday season for Switch and the 3DS continues to truck along. They've also been pretty successful with their mobile outings thus far (Fire Emblem Heroes, Pokemon Go, and Mario Run). There's more that Nintendo needs to do, but the path they are on is very solid compared to a few years ago.

The thing is he's not really wrong...

Some of his tweets are wrong though and you can go back to my earlier post to see what I'm referring to. For someone who claims to be smarter than 95% of journalists in the industry today, that's kind of a problem. One thing I didn't bring up earlier is his claim that Switch hasn't sold even a fourth of PS4's numbers in the US up to this point. Bullshit. The PS4 wasn't sitting at 8 million units sold in the United Sates seven months in.

Colin Moriarty is wrong all the time. And he's arrogant about it. And he moves goal posts. In January, he made an entire video about the "same old Nintendo", a company that has learned nothing and is doomed to have another failure on its hands. Now, all of a sudden, Switch isn't really successful, because it hasn't met PS4's numbers, launch aligned.

He's a real class act, full of honesty and integrity.

Actually, no, the industry is better without him.

Great news.

As far as the future of the system/games, I still am choosing to believe that we're getting a BOTW sequel using the existing assets circa ~2020. And if not, at minimum maybe continued DLC expansions #believe

I'm gonna going to guess more of a Link between world situation. Smaller scale and maybe traditional?

Then a BOTW type sequel.

True, he's not wrong.

But I'm also right by saying the Switch hasn't even really started to sale. Because a lot of people WILL wait for the Holidays to buy it.

In terms of quality, 2018 will have to beat the high bar which is 2017. But in terms of gaming sales, there's still some ammo for Nintendo to exceed 2017. There's still the potential Smash Bros. Pokemon could end up as a holiday 2018 title. Fire Emblem is doing pretty well worldwide. Traditional Kirby platformers do good numbers. Mario Maker maybe is in the works. And who knows what surprises are there on the third party front that could sell big.

Oh totally I’m not a fan at all, in fact I always found all of Kinda Funny to be fairly obnoxious and holier then though I was completely referring to the person whom I quoted. That’s if comparing the first years sales month over month that he is correct numbers wise but solely that.

The most important thing is that the Switch is a complete 180 from the Wii U. I'm really glad that Nintendo is doing much better and finding a bigger audience. The Switch is an incredible and convenient device, and I am super excited for its future (especially because these great worldwide sales mean that there is a higher chance of a Dark Souls port...Nintendo/FromSoft, pls!)
