100k(40hr/week) vs 300k(55hr/week) salary

Would your life be drastically different if you were making 300k vs 100k?

What I mean is, if you are multimillionaire or a billionaire then for sure yourlife would be a lot different but I cant think of anything that I would be doing differently if I was making 300k with more work and strees. I still cant buy a private jet, or a beach house. I would be doing exactly what I am doing except would have more savings but thats all.

I feel like I can afford and do things that I like already with my salary.

Edit

I dont make 100k lol I am just talking in general. So its not a bragging thread

Edit 2

Man you guys really took this the wrong way. Probably my fault, I should have clarified. Difference between making 100k and 300k is not just 15hour. I meant more stress and probably completely totally different career may be that gets you that much money.

I came across this article and that's why I made the OP

The Perfect Salary for Happiness: $75,000
https://blogs.wsj.com/wealth/2010/09/07/the-perfect-salary-for-happiness-75000-a-year/

Anyways so the consensus here is it would help for early retirement. I agree with that, but that about it

Yes, the difference is working 30 years at 100k vs 10 years at 300k. I'd work an extra 15 hours a week for 10 years to get 20 years to myself.

Money buys you time and freedom that's all.

I'll go with the 100k. That is more than enough for where I live, even if I had to support a family.

Assuming you invest the entire 200k difference (if you really don't need it), you could retire in a few years. Easy choice.

I think that's a good way of looking at this.

With a 300k salary I could maintain a nice lifestyle and potentially retire much faster (maybe in 9-10 years). I already work around 60 hours a week so it’s doable.

I will say though, moving to 8 hour work days is super liberating after having longer hours for a while. I now have 8 hour Fridays and it feels like heaven getting out early.

Yea i dont think you thought it through with the early retirement factor

I'd take the 300k.

Short term pain sure, but in a few years I could easily pay off a decent house. After that, save like mad for 10-15 years and take early retirement.

Then I can be a retired millionaire. Win.

If only!

Without a doubt I would take the 55 hours for 300k.

It's not even a hard decision for me.

There is a massive, massive difference between 100k and 300k.

OMG, $300k easily. 15 hrs more a week is not that bad. That's like a Mon-Fri, 8am-7pm shift.

If it were between 40hrs vs like 70hrs, I would probably take the 40hr gig.

The difference between 40hr and 55hr is negligible when you are tripling your pay. I work 45 hours now. If I had to work 10 extra hours a week to triple my salary of course I would in a heartbeat. You would hit retirement soooo much faster at 300k/year.

300k. 15 hours more per week is not that much and 300k will significantly have more of an impact than 100k.

Plus, my wife could probably stop working and we could raise a family, get our own place, and live quite a comfortable life.

Hell, that's like the time people spend commuting. I'll move like 5 minutes walking distance to work rather than an hour to work, sleep in a car, etc etc to get that additional pay.

Edit: And it'll help me quite my side gigs/hustle that take up additional time of my life as well. Focusing fully on one job is far better IMO.

It is THREE times the first salary, of course there will be a significant lifestyle change. You migh not have your own private plan but you can go first class on the more expensive trips you can afford on top of larger house, things for the kids etc.

Me personally, I value time with my family so 100k situation would be my style but let’s not pretend that an extra 200k a year doesn’t change the game. Heck some people work 55hr or more making only 50k.

I'd take either or. $100k can get you a lot where I'm from. And $300k? Psh I can do that too. Though at the moment? Give me the 40 hour. I can spend time with friends and family that way.

I make more than the lower amount and less than the higher amount and I'd definitely take the higher amount and invest the difference. I probably work that much anyway.

1) why would you want to buy a private jet?
2) you're right making 300k wont allow you to do those things, you could buy a beach house depending on where, but what it does allow you to do is
3) buy investment properties such that you can eventually completely stop working as you have passive income coming in.

I'm really not sure. On one hand, I'd be more than comfortable with a 100k/40 hour week job. On the other hand, the 300k/55 hour week job would let me retire way earlier, at the cost of burning myself out and having less time for myself.

Maybe I'd work the 300k job for a year or two to save up, then swap back down to a less hectic job.

I already work 50 - 60 hours every week for a fraction of that so uh...yeah. This isn't even a question. I can think of plenty of things Id be doing differently like actually having money to pay off loans or try to get a house or invest or save up for a family.

I'd do the $300k until I paid off all my debts, then switch to $100k. The difference between $100k and $300k is negligible in terms of happiness, unless you have a bunch of money sinks in your life.

If I'm still single and have no one dependent on me? Definitely the 55 hours and extra 200K annually. As long as I keep my expenses the same, that would mean retiring way faster. And I want to retire as young as I possible can.

Go for 300k, retire early.

Id go for the 100k because thats more than enough money and time is worth so much more.

It takes 3 years to make 300k compared to 1 year to make 300k. If your time is that valuable, you would invest the paltry 15 extra hours a week so you can retire much earlier. You could work 10 years and easily retire. The more money you have, the easier it is to make and save. Knock out your mortgage within the first year. Knock out everything else by 18 months. Live modestly and save/invest heavily after all debts are paid off.

Smart play is to work longer hours and put all the extra you make into savings and retire early.

I don't know why people really want to sell off their youth just so they can sit around in their old age.

In a ridiculous scenario like this where someone will pay you an extra 200K just for working an extra 3-4 hours per day it might make sense, but that's never going to happen.

I'm not working more than a 40/hr week if I don't have to. And 100k is plenty. I'd rather enjoy my life now then potentially more time in the future.

I could live well enough on 100K a year easily. I don't need to burn myself up with five 11 hour days (or six 9ish hour days) a week. I've lived that life and it did NOT get me 100K a year.

who says 1) that you would be old and 2) that your just going to sit around?

i plan on traveling, doing sports with my kids, doing hobbies, charity work, otherwise keeping myself busy.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

If I could, overnight, start making three times as much money for a slightly larger workload, I’m not “selling my youth.”

I’m 28. I could retire at 38 if I played it smart. Easily. Compound interest is gonna really help out with large starting sums.

Retired at 38 isn’t me “sitting around in my old age.”

You'd rather continue working up to the day that you croak?

No thanks.

You triple your salary by working three hours more a day if spread equal through a five day work week.

Well worth it. It's actually a no brainer really.

You more easily hire a maid, gardener, poolboy, solid prepared meals at 300k saving you tons of time doing chores, all of your free time would basically be downtime

I live in a pretty cheap part of the country with no kids and would take comfort over money. 40/100K is an easy choice for me.
