Trump to declassify JFK files

It was known that they'd come up for declassification now, but it's sorta newsworthy because there was speculation that the sitting president would block the release.

Was supposed to happen anyway. He just won't sign anything to block it.

Each assassination record shall be publicly disclosed in full, and available in the Collection no later than the date that is 25 years after the date of the enactment of this Act, unless the President certifies, as required by this Act, that –

(i) continued postponement is made necessary by an identifiable harm to military defense, intelligence operations, law enforcement or conduct of foreign relations; and

(ii) the identifiable harm is of such gravity that it outweighs the public interest in disclosure.

The Act was signed by President Bush on October 26, 1992, thus the final release date is October 26, 2017.*

Taking credit for something that was about to happen anyway.

Shocked.

Well I had listened to an NPR podcast and that guy was saying that the FBI or the CIA (I forget who) were really pressing for these documents to NOT be released. The president has that power to do it.

The guy was saying that the government had really slipped up on intelligence and could have caught Lee Harvey Oswald but didn't take the information seriously. I guess there's some really embarrassing information in there.

Sorry, I don't remember verbatim. It was on Fresh Air a couple months ago.

We've elected a president who uses a Tweet about the JFK files to play to his base. People who would cheer if JFK was president today and was shot in the streets. Fantastic this is all wonderful.

What a fucking world.

Taking credit for something that happens anyway. Classic Trump.
Also lol at Kellys comments, Cheetos little bitch trying not to get fired or something.

Ah! Found the episode and the transcript:

They withheld a tremendous amount of information. And I think it's quite clear that many senior officials of the CIA and the FBI really perjured themselves before the Warren Commission because they did have something to hide. They had something important to hide, which is that they had known a lot about Lee Harvey Oswald before the assassination, that both of those agencies, the CIA and the FBI, both had him under surveillance and sometimes pretty aggressive surveillance in the weeks before the assassination.

And had they simply acted on the information in their own files, Lee Harvey Oswald might well have been rounded up before the assassination, and the world would be a different place today. And they wanted to hide just how much they had known about Oswald from the commission. And as a result, the commission couldn't act on a lot of evidence that might have pointed to other people who knew what Oswald was going to do.

DAVIES: Right, and there's a review board that was set up by the law that governs this. And the one person who could prevent their release is the president, right?

SHENON: The irony upon ironies that the president, President Donald Trump, who is no stranger to conspiracy theories, is the guy who has the final decision here. Under the law, only the president of the United States can block the release of some of these documents. And he has until October to do that. We - I understand with a colleague of mine who - Larry Sabato, a professor at the University of Virginia. We've learned that indeed a couple of agencies will appeal, and they will urge President Trump not to release some of these documents.

yeah, is he taking credits ? It's been bound to be open to this date... for like what, 30 years now ?

He's been taking credit for the economy, job growth and whatever is positive even though he hasn't passed anything substantial to impact anything.

He's a shameless piece of shit and it works great with his base.

These were already set to be released now, for like decades. He's not doing shit other than trying to make it about himself.

Why is the National Security Council concerned about this? They wanted Trump to postpone release for some reason.

I feel like a mod should change the thread title because it's inaccurate. It makes it sound like he's personally decided to release them. They were already set to be released now for a long time.

To be fair, according to the Washington Post he was asked to postpone the release and is refusing. Why some want it postponed, I don't know.

If you look at my post above, an episode of Fresh Air looked into it. Basically, it's going to make the FBI and CIA look bad.

Trump will not block declassification of JFK files

is a more accurate title. I'm interested but also know this man does nothing that's not self-serving.

Yeah I saw that but I'm not absolutely sure that is the only reason. I'm not saying something major will be dropped it's just other agencies beside the CIA and FBI seemed to be concerned.

That implies that the long term plan was literally “ask for a delay forever.” That hardly seems like a professional strategy and means the CIA and FBI would rather protect folks who are long gone than take a couple lumps for mistakes their predecessors made. If that’s the reason, fine, but it’s a terrible one.
