won't be showing promotional videos. aka we won't see the game. bummer

Pay attention to the announcement. They say they won't "showcase promotional videos or place playable demos in this venue" (the venue being the general admission entertainment area).

So it's somewhat implied that they are showing exactly that (videos and playable demos) in the other area of Gamescom (the area restricted to the press).

I'm really excited after this update indeed...

Final Ryo/Shenhua face ?

Also, the game will be published/distributed by Deep Silver now.
Also, did they change the logo again ???

There's still a year or so of development left, so probably not final final.

Like I said in the other topic, Ryo is basically an updated:

So I can dig it. He was off-model before, but they've done a great job of making a faithful update that respects how the old game looked.

Looks like the environment is Choubu...? Based on the river and the structure of the buildings, this seems to confirm it is indeed based on Fenghuang, China.

I hope it's not final indeed. Ryo still need some tweaking, but is on right track. Shenhua though ? Uuuuuuuugh

You guys missed the new KS update?

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3/posts/1958762?ref=backer_project_update

Its not much except Deep Silver is publishing the physical version, whatever that means. Sounds like a boost to the team

Deep Silver Partnership Signed
The Shenmue III project has signed a global publishing contract with Deep Silver, the game division of the German company, Koch Media. Game fans may already be familiar with Deep Silver, as they are a trusted brand who has helped many Japanese game titles find their audiences around the world.
We are proud to have gained a wonderfully reliable partner to make sure Shenmue III reaches all its fans all over the planet.
Please see the press statement here.
(To be released at 4pm August 17th JST)

Deep Silver published Persona 5, the upcoming Kingdom Come & Metro Exodus and the newly released Agents of Mayhem, which got a lot of attention for some reason. Other then that its kinda... bland.

does everyone really think those models look good? :\
the environments they've been showing off look wonderful, but i dont know man. those 2 character models look like art from a chinese mobile phone knockoff shenmue game or something
ryo is cross eyed
shenhua looks NOTHING like shenhua, and also looks like a dead eyed plastic doll

this is what i was expecting/hoping for:

uh...that's not looking so hot. also that logo sucks

Agreed. I can't understand how all of these legendary Japanese designers/developers are raising MILLIONS on Kickstarter and then completely failing to meet the most basic of fan/backer expectations. It truly is bizarre.

dammit, so that new logo was made by yu? i dont know why he's so adamant about just not using the original logo

"I really wanted to bring home the Shenmue logo because this belongs to all of you, and I know how passionate everyone feels about it. As the result, I felt the design should come more from the heart. So, with more than a bit of trepidation, I took brush to hand. I believe we have reached a design that will please, but let me know what you think!"

I couldn't give a shit if Shenmue 3 looks like Minecraft. I never thought this game would ever happen. Shenmue and Shenmue 2 were not exactly graphical masterpieces at the times they came out.

translated article with yu from famitsu.
http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/08/translationinterview-with-yu-suzuki.html

this stuff is especially exciting:
Q: To start with, could you tell us about the current state of the development?

YS: When we announced the revision to the release schedule the other day, our discussions with Deep Silver were already advanced. With Deep Silver to become our partner, I realized that we would be able to aim even higher than our initial goals. However, for that additional development time would be needed, so in order for us to adopt these, I set the release timing to the last half of 2018.

Q: Finally, could you give a message to everyone as they look forward to the game's release?

YS: The point I'd most like to communicate is that we have gained a strong partner in Deep Silver, which has allowed us to aim for a "beefed-up" Shenmue III. Thank you to everyone for your support.

Now that we have seen the big reveal... Can someone defend the new character designs as anything but simply worse than the originals? They look like student projects made for forum mods of an unrelated game just to add Shenmue characters. Shenhua looks more and more generic every time I see her new model.

They are still WIP. And in any case, I wouldn't call them new designs, just new assets, which had to happen unless they were going to release another game with DC graphics.

I also don't think it was a 'big reveal'. We haven't seen anything final. It was a peek behind the curtain, nothing more.

Hey all, thought I'd share my most recent Shenmue AM2 podcast interview.

Find out how, in a bizaree twist of fate, one of the two guys who became the face of Shenmue 3 announcement reactions (the other being Michael Huber) discovered he doesn't even like the series.

Special guest Scott Pell joins the Matt and Andrew to discuss Shenmue and how Scott became one of the faces of the Shenmue announcement.

Figured while I still have an account here I should at least keep the thread ticking over for people looking for information on the game.

Update #76 - Say Hello to the Deep Silver Promotion Team

Good housekeeping update. Gist of it is that they're moving away from the monthly update format, and more towards a traditional promotional cycle in 2018; which will be handled by Deep Silver. The update also mentions another Dev Room video is in the works, so that'll probably be the Christmas/New Years update next month.

So what events are we going to see Shenmue III at next? Well, there are a few options I can think of.

February - MAGIC Monaco 2018 - Run by Shibuya Productions, one of the financiers of Shenmue III. The game was previously there in 2016.

March - GDC - Apparently a favourite of Yu Suzuki. Yu took the original Shenmue to GDC, did his postmortem on the game there, and had secret meetings regarding III before the KS launched. Lot of Shenmue history at GDC.

June - E3 2018 - The big one. Shenmue III returning to E3 after three years. Probably a certainty, although I dunno if it'd make a press conference or not. Hopefully so. It could slot into Sony's show along other high-tier indies/AA titles.

I'd say later rather than sooner, but I've been wrong before. I guess it depends how that "2nd half of 2018" release window holds up. YSnet deserve the benefit of the doubt on that one, though Yu talking about Choubu possibly tripling in scope after Deep Silver's investment warms me up to the idea of a slip to 2019 for all the right reasons.
