Resident Evil 4 Remake: Exclusive Chapter 5 Gameplay Walkthrough by GameInformer

This is a remake of a still fun classic, so new graphics are among its most important features...

I think gameplay, new additions and features, and approach to story is more important than graphics. It's three generations ahead, so it's going to look better by default. Whether it looks stylistically better is up for debate, but as far as graphic fidelity is concerned I don't find that to be the most important thing here.

I'm unnecessarily excited by the manual treasure gem combination thing and the physics charms on the case.

Honestly kind of hated it at first, but its growing on me pretty quickly. I can appreciate that they tried a new look out with such extreme weather.

I could see this being similar to some new weather effects in Dragons Dogma 2 possibly. What made me start appreciating it is that it looks like it will effect the gameplay. Sometimes your vision is obscured and I could see that leading to a little more tension. Reminds me slightly of the night time effects on the original Dragons Dogma effecting how I played.

Some of the lighting is a little strange at times but I couldn't really say why. The characters do seem to glow a bit but I guess its not the end of the world.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Keep in mind this is still a PS4 game, so they're still not fully tapping into the new hardware exclusively.

Despite that, the game looks fantastic and at least we can be safe that the new gens will run it at high resolution and 60 FPS.

I think Uncharted 4 from 2016 looks better than this in most regards. I think a lot of the problems with the visuals have to do with questionable art direction and poor post processing effects. Hair rendering in this game is top notch though, best I've seen to date.
Bloom is particularly bad. Tiny size while very strong, same as early Unreal Engine 3 games. It's definitely a downgrade from how it's done in other RE Engine games.

Alright, watching that footage gave a much better impression on the game than those crappy screenshots, even the rain in motion wasn't that bad and you could see the rain bounce off Leon's shoulders. The atmosphere seems to be the star of the show especially in the indoor areas. Soooooooooooooo glad the Merchant and Luis seem to be close to their OG personalities. "It's game time!" is still in! Well done on that. I liked the attache case and the charms.

However, I still have some nitpicks:

-Where the hell are the lasers for aiming! It's too characteristic of this game to not have lasers for aiming. That's GOT to be in there at some point, especially that RE2R had it too
-The soundtrack is bleh sounding so far, not too far off from RE2R in that's handling of the legendary OST.
-Not entirely sold on the sidequests yet. Hope the game doesn't turn into some bloated fetch quests filled world with sidequests to detract from the main point.

Even with the postivies I listed, and I have the game pre ordered, I still can't help but wish it was Mikami leading the production on it, his vision for it to wanted it as a 1:1 REmake would've had me drool but such a concept is too good for this world I guess

I think even RE7 has better graphics? Am i tripping? Something looks off.
I agree, both RE 7 and 8 look better.

Uncharted rain looks soooo much better...

The bear of bad news
It's like they were just about to ship the definitive version of RE4 and then got raided by Grover Street Games and were forced at gunpoint to use their crud rain effects.

Holy mother of God that rain drives me nuts it ruins so many otherwise picturesque scenes.

Even if Mikami was in charge his is not willing put that much resource and effort to make exact same game he already made and that already available everywhere.

At that point what exactly is the point remaking if if its exact same game but with better graphics? That how it was with Crisis Core and it was considered remaster rather than remake.

If you guys want exact same game, just play the original RE4, it’s available in every modern platform by now.

The RE4 HD project is pretty dope. It would never happen but I wish Capcom would have thrown that dude some cash and released the project as a pre-order bonus for this remake.

I personally welcome the changes in remake, in fact its reason I'm willing spend money on it. If it was EXACT 1:1 recreation then there would be no point, I just play the original RE4.

Thus my idea giving us the best of both worlds.

Is this Capcoms B team?

Seriously the PBR shader quality and variety looks to have taken big dive when compared to RE2/3make. Like the skin ,clothing , table all seem to be using a similar shader. Shit looks alot more stylized than the photoreal PBR pipeline used in the previous REngine games.

Dont get me started on the shit rain effect. Would it kill them to ad some transparency to the it. Not to mention it only seems to render 10 feet in front of you. 22 years later and MGS 2 still hasnt been beat....uggghhh

For reference

That footage is absolutely hideous. It looks weirdly upscaled with tons of aliasing artifacts everywhere. Not to mention it's the vanilla steam version which has incorrent gamma & color, tons of missing/broken effects & lighting and visual glitches. The HD Project restores the visuals to how it looked on the GC (minus the hd textures obviously).

While true, it goes for an entirely different feeling. It seems like RE 4 Remake is trying to use rain in order to harshly obscure vision and make the player feel claustrophobic. The question is, what's the best way to do this?

Should they just have went back to the old ways of treating the camera behind leon like an actual camera, and do the 'rain drops on screen' effect?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Looking good. Maybe a bit too much like RE2/Village 3rd person (which aren't even that far removed from RE4 but the generational gap is evident) but I suppose the formula works and they weren't gonna overhaul the series again already. This will probably be the best game ever for newcomers but won't have the same impact for people who have played the original. What's up with the framerate though? This footage certainly doesn't appear to be 60fps most of the time. It does in some parts but definitely not the majority of gameplay. Recording issue or? Also why didn't they figure out some better radio thing to make the visible Ingrid make sense? It's nice that it's seamless with gameplay rather than a paused screen for those bits but Leon's just touching his ear in cliche spy ways to hear the conversation, he doesn't have a screen to see her, it's just for the player and out of place.

I'd have preferred fog, but a downpour also messes up with your hearing, so there's that.

I don't consider it immersion breaking, but I completely understand the complaints that it looks really off and ruins it for other people.

Capcom doesn't care for the leaks but I do, what's wrong with the shoehorny streamers ? , they live for leaking what's not supposed to be leaked , nobody cares about what you do actually.

Ironically, I think I will care about this remake more than the original. I'm just not that fussy about the direction RE4 took the series in. To me, true RE pretty much ended after CV came out. Everything else before RE4 simply predated the story in CV by a few mere months.

CV was set in December of 1998, yes?

The gore seems more cartoony and less detailed than re2 remake, let alone ds remake and its fantastic skin layers system.

This shit should be a priority in an horror game...

Its looking fine to me, I still think the original holds up well though, I played the opening a week or so ago just out of interest and it plays and looks great on PS5 (using the PS4 Remastered version)

Also, this is my first time hearing GI guys, I wish they shut the fuck up and let the video play

As someone who never play the original and currently going through the franchise, I am pretty hyped for this remake.

Not a fan of how dark it is
Dude, it's a lot brighter than the original, haven't you been paying attention to the purists?

As someone who never play the original and currently going through the franchise, I am pretty hyped for this remake.
As someone who played and beat the original, I want this remake injected straight into my veins.

Decrease the rain drops slightly, also decrease the size and make the right less white and more transparaent. Sorted and they could patch that in day 1.
