Star Wars Jedi Survivor physical versions will reportedly require a download to play

To think that it has come down to downloading a portion of the game when it comes to physical discs. It's like the Switch cartridge situation where large portions of the game had to be downloaded because publishers were too cheap to manufacture bigger cartridges. It's not fun being a physical collector these days.

Early adopters of physical media?

What weird weird sentence.

People who get the disc before release? Happens all the time. Sometimes a week too early.
Why are assuming the rest of the game hasnt already uploaded?
The preload starts in 2 days....if someone tries to put the disk in now, chances are the game will "update" itself.
Considering its not actually a day one patch.....its literally the rest of the game.

Ive gotten updates for broken streets dates many many times.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Tell me about it. And, even if the game is somehow magically playable straight off of the disc, you're still getting an inferior product because there are Day One patches that increase the game's performance, fix bugs, etc.

That used to be the mission statement behind Limited Run Games - make physical copies of games that had all the patches rolled in, that could be kept and preserved for years and years after the download servers went offline. Sadly, they were also blinded by greed and now release stuff that's just as broken as the rest of the physical releases.

They also fired an employee for wanting to buy a Harry Potter game.

physical is dead

I’ll still be able to trade in, give away, or otherwise resell the physical disk, even if it doesn’t contain the entire game on it.

Call me when digital allows me to do the same. Until that point, I will continue to buy physical because I’m not bending over and letting companies take away what few consumer copyright protections I have for the sake of “convenience”.

A ton of games require downloads now, day 1 patches. So it’s not exactly a surprise. It sucks for game preservation, because there are a shit load of games that do that. Some of them I’m sure do it specifically so if people get the game early they are locked out. It is a problem in my opinion, used two discs. For $70 it wouldn’t kill them. I wonder what will happen when servers and stuff go down.

Is there any group of people that are fighting to reserve games like this? Even if they go down off-line? Like ripping the data from the desk, whatever? I guess it can always be done on PC right?

On a sidenote does anyone know if you have to log in to EA to play this game? The EA account linked to my PlayStation doesn’t work and they won’t let me recover it because I can’t answer a bunch of absurd questions. They also won’t unlink it. They said they can’t verify my identity, which is weird because Activision when you send them a picture of my ID and proof.
I digress though, I know it’s single player, but —if anyone knows whether or not they force you to log into play— I would appreciate it.

Nothing new. With AAA games being as big as they are nowadays, did anyone think publishers were going to keep putting games on multiple discs? Plus most games require a day-one patch anyway.

Uh, yes...? Many publishers release their new console games on two discs.

All this hoo-ha and the article doesn't even confirm how much content the discs will even hold? This really doesn't seem that big of a deal.

Dunno about fine but you should be able to complete the game. Given how buggy most AAA games are at launch, imagine playing the GM build without the Day 0 patch.
My internet is pretty bad, so most games i play without having the day 1 patch installed and the only one i can remember having issues, but those were also present with the day 1 patch, was the callisto protocol.

How much data can UHD carry? Less than 100GB? If that's the case, one third of the game have to be downloaded.

No longer grabbing this on day one. Will wait for it to hit the bargain bin then shoplift it.

Triple layered have a capacity of 100GB, if you only have to download 1/3 of the total file size, it really doesn't seem like a huge deal to me.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "1.0" that's on the disc is very tiny and the Day 0 patch is essentially the whole game.

But you still should be able to download patches while you sleep, no? Maybe it's metered.

So? Ship with multiple discs. Red Dead 2, TLOU 2 etc.

I think the point is that gamers are pretty much conditioned that a physical release requires a Day 0 patch anyway... it's not worth the effort making a two disc release for the 1% of people who would complain about the Day 0 patch being 100-something GB instead of 40-50. Esp when most of that 1% is probably people who played on a pirated console and even stole the game from a retailer (as noted above)

Their thinking is like this: the game will require patches anyway (duh) so might as well ship it like that with a day zero Patch yo save a buck or two on an additional Blu ray 100. It's not entirely without merit. For example cyberpunk shipped on two discs and in it's current state the discs are mostly useless. Pretty much the whole game is downloaded. If I recall cold war also required a day zero download?
