Microsoft also shut down departments dedicated to bringing Xbox games to physical retail

We're seeing the scaling down of Xbox as a brand bit by bit here.

Was obvious there would be layoffs after the ABK close and that's without Xbox being in the trouble that it is in.

They're going to be looking to improve their margins across the board.

Getting rid of CS and getting rid of physical releases, they'll probably move to a largely direct sales approach and digital only, which is going to be a greatly diminished presence as a hardware manufacturer.

They're really pushing to drive away their base eh? I guess if you're an Xbox fan without excellent internet you're kinda fucked, plus soldiers on deployment were a big issue talked about with an all digital future before. None of this makes any sense unless they're going full multi platform.

Very valid point.

While some people think that all-digital is the future, it's clear that the masses are buying PS5 Disc over the cheap Series S, which is the best selling Series console.

Xbox will become even less attractive for the average consumer.

I already switched to all digital except Switch.

I think the only thing consumers should be focused on is legislation protecting digital ownership rights and requiring digital keys be sold at multiple stores. That's the core battle of the next decade for console owners.

Physical will likely be gone for both systems next gen, or offered as a disc drive add-on only for boutique items like Limited Run Games, which will be the equivalent of collectible records for the music industry. Good luck in your fight.

I smells another PS4 E3 situation if they decide to go adorably all digital only (with or without additional adorable DRM).

The Series X doesn't sell all that well and the Series S is already all digital. There is probably a large percentage of Series X users who are digital only or nearly digital only.

They have all the telemetry and data on this that they need to make a decision. They know pretty much what this will cost them in terms of market share, but the reality is it'll raise their margins and they're already losing market share.

He didn't, people just read into his wording that because he said the controller hadn't been canceled he was alluding to the console revision being canceled.
Not sure. I was pointing to the lack of disk drive in the leaked image really. Entire future of Xbox is a bit hazy right now.
Yeah well, when he leaked the new controller, he did say "that doesn't seem to have changed".

With all the rumors and reports recently, it's hard not to take it as anything other than MS having changed their plans.
