IGN: A Year Since Its Release, Sony Seems to Have Abandoned PlayStation VR2

Does this even play movies? Being closed off to only games and also only one platform made this dead on arrival.

It's still too far ahead of the mainstream consumer in terms of desirability, continued usage and cost. Lack of established AAA IT'S certainly plays a role, but in every real life situation I've ever seen involving it, it's been a party trick, essentially. Some wacky gimmick you pull out when you have multiple guests over. It's a "hey, check this out," instead of feeling like an open Door into an accessible hobby like gaming proper.

Just too expensive and not enough exclusives. Does feel abandoned already at this point, no first party aaa even announced for a year or 2 from now...... 😕

It's a good idea to open up to pc just to clear stock.

Should have pc support day 1 out of the box.

I dont see how this would have helped them much, they might have sold more units but other than re4, Horizon and gt7, people would have bought the cheaper pc versions of games. It also would have scared away a bunch of the pc devs from porting games to psvr. It's just out of necessity now to sell the stock sitting everywhere......

Aw geez, who`d have thought that an ultra enthusiast piece of hardware would not find the widespread acceptance to justify further big investments?
Well, there is always the next VR hardware release that will finally make VR mainstream, right?

I knew it was a bad idea buying this thing and I still went ahead and bought it. However, if they bring support to PC it will actually make everything OK with me and I'll be happy with the purchase.

You mean an overly expensive gimmicky console add-on with no games has failed? Who could have seen this coming? Surely there hasn't been literal decades of similar overly expensive, gimmicky console add-ons falling on their face to serve as a warning?

Would have worked out a lot better for them if they made it PC compatible from day one in the first place. I’m not sure how successful the first one was but I’ve always said VR headsets are still to expensive for the average console gamer.

If when/ the day comes where we can have high performance BR headsets for around that 250-300 mark ( about the price of a descent steering wheel and pedal set up) it will get more buyers.

Right now it’s the price of a console and overall I still don’t think VR has its killer app. I would love VR for racing games, flight sims, mech warrior… racing, flying and general vehicular combat. I’d love VR for that. But I dont think I’d want to spend 500 bucks for that experience on top of the price of console…. On top of the price of steering wheel and flight stick. That’s a pretty hefty asking price for a device with a limited library, no backwards compatible and probably no forward compatibility either. And I think that might turn some PC users off….. not being sure how well Sony will support it beyond PS5, when you probably could have just spent the money on a meta quest or something else and fealt a bit more safe about your investment. But maybe in a few years time their PC commitments will be more solid so PSVR can Atleast get PC and PlayStation customers to maybe pad out the numbers needed to keep inverted in VR. I hope they continue to do, so. As I said for vehicular games ( racing flight/combat based) they are unmatched for immersion.

First time I ever tried a PSVR it was with that star wars game…. The size of the battleships really impressed me. You never quite realise the scale and size of things in a game world until you see it through a VR headset. I remember trying this one shooting game ( kind of reminded me of virtua cop or time crisis) shooting gallery style games are awesome in VR. I’m actually suprised we haven’t seen a resurgence in arcade style gun games with PSVR. That gun game though?… can’t remember the name of it, I think it came bundled with PSVR for PS4…. That had me imagining a modern day virtua cop or time crisis. They are in rails so a dev would not have to worry about full independent 3D movement. As long as you can duck and weave in your couch it’s all good.

I also got to play PCars in VR on a full set up at some arcade in Jamaica. They had the full hydraulic set up and everything. It was fucking amazing. Would love dedicated a set up like that in my house. I’d never get off it! 😅😅😅

I hope games keep coming out for it. I felt burned by Sega over and over as a kid with peripherals and consoles. If Sony doesn’t support the thing for the life of PS5 it’ll be something I remember along with the jacked up price to play online (and lack of renewal sales since) when evaluating whatever comes next generation.

But honestly, I‘ve been very satisfied with it so far. Main reason I bought it was for the kids. It has the games they wanted most. And one of them in particular uses it all the time. Full games like GT7 blow my mind, but I still prefer the big screen by and large. All that said, I didn’t pay very much. We traded in a lot of stuff that no one touched any more. I think I paid less than 200 for horizon bundle and Sony charging stand. And was able to get every game we have on sale except the Freddy’s ones.

Sony literally has to fire 900 people and close a studio because the industry isn't doing well..

Ign: SoNy haZ GiVen UP oN Vr2 durrr...

No shit ign... they clearly can't have any expenses right now that aren't absolutely vital to the business.

I love vr but in their position they clearly have to axe the product if they want to stay in the game.
Uh the 'industry' is doing fine. Their damage is almost entirely self inflicted.
They have the top console in current sales. They've had to fire people because of MISMANAGEMENT and BAD PLANNING. Period.
They don't and never have made their money on console hardware sales - they've made it on software sales and licensing. Their 1st party software output has been sub-par. And that par is THEIR previous output. Then the knee jerk "hey our software sales and subscriber rate isn't growing fast enough - increase prices!" reaction which is always a 1 fiscal quarter numbers band-aid at the expense of long term growth.

Remasters of new games don't sell well enough to replace new banner content. They've put too much effort into GAAS that didn't pan out or release at all - lighting money on fire there. Their best studio for output this generation is Insomniac (by far) and they just axed a bunch of heads over there too!

Great example. They publish Helldivers. Great potential exclusive content. But no.. let's port that stuff to PC and make up for our sub-par output on PS5.... except wait a minute! We don't charge 100CAD a year to play online on PC! Whoops! Hey guess which platform I bought Helldivers on thanks to that move, Sony? You lost my Plus sub months ago when you jacked the price up (would have resubbed if there wasn't an increase).. now you had to split your profit on that game with Valve. Genius. You turned $120 CAD on your platform to a $50 transaction you had to split with steam. That's the kind of brilliant math that gets people fired.

Sony is a company that seems built to self destruct immediately after wild success. Cyclical. Happened after PS2. Happening now IN SPITE OF the fact their console is no.1 (not in total sales v. switch.. but in month to month current sales) which is frankly amazing.

I could see them doing a soft relaunch.. it came out at a horrible time (IMO), and this year doesn't look any better. Sucks, because I'm dying to get one still. So damn expensive already, and inflation hasn't helped.

Well, they have yet to release any Astrobot for it, so that's the main problem... Astrobot will save the day and the universe of all our problems.

Tbh the only headset I can think off that's fought ahead is apple with the apple vision. If Sony can replicate that with more power. It can be a 8k tv and entertainment in one. include the joypad/joycons in the package and can be a VR aswell. Apple is seriously onto something. Only problem with psvr2 is u needed the console. Sony vision playstation Pro wouldn't need a console just 6g network or wifi

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
I did say but you motherfuckers kept quoting me & telling me I'm wrong.
They can't handle more then one product at a time.
And that includes porting shit to other things.

I still can't get over that Sony had nothing planned for PSVR2 in its first Christmas. First-Party support was weak for its launch, but there was a lot of talk about it being a "soft launch" (they didn't even put it in stores, it only shipped out of their digital retailer) and Horizon was a good enough showcase and GT7 was an amazing proof-of-execution of a standard-format game also being great in VR, and it wasn't quite clear why Sony had rushed out a second VR unit when they only supported in-house production of the first VR unit for a little over 3 years, but surely by Christmas it would get a harder push... Nope.

It's cool kit, I'm happy for those who feel they've gotten their money's worth out of it and are happy with the studios building out its marketplace (bless Vertigo Games and Skydance Interactive as well as any company who has added VR modes to existing popular games,) but I just cannot figure out why this was dumped to market if there was so little interest in it on Sony's part.

It's a same, cause the hardware is amazing, and the library is quite good with games constantly being released for it.

I don't regret mine at all even thought I only play it sparingly.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I originally read that PSVR2 would not support PSVR content. I was sure that Sony would develope an input conversion utility that would allow the PSVR2 to emulate PSVR input and tracking. Such a waste. It's not over with though, and I believe (hope) that Sony has more in store for PSVR2. The idea that the platform is dead 12 months after release is hyperbole.

They rushed out the hardware well before there was the software to support it, even the hint of software. No big announcements or promises. What did they expect people to play? You could have convinced more people to jump in if PSVR1 support existed. At least then you could play Astro Bot or Blood & Truth.

I highly doubt Playstation is going to buckle over PSVR2. Lol

I could see them doing a soft relaunch.

A soft re-launch?? I don't know how much softer they could go with this hardware.

I mean, you've seen it in every PS State of Play, when they cut away to the VR segment, the audience groans and gripes until the "real games" come back on, even when there are good games in the PSVR2 segment. Metro VR was the only one I've ever seen accepted with open arms, and that was fleeting. I don't see how you can build a marketing campaign on games that are not popping with existing PlayStation owners, and the combo price of console and headset are too much to try to bring in new audiences right now.

I guess I could see them pivoting to pitch this as a general VR "open-platform" device (despite it not going anywhere else but PC) once PC integration comes in, but then again, little to nothing is going to "open up" so it's not an honest pitch; it'll still be mostly a closed ecosystem. You won't be able to use Valve Index or Vive or tether Quest or Pico on PS5, it's just a one-way exchange for PSVR fans to get more use out of their hardware or for PC VR gamers to maybe trade up on a headset. Meanwhile for developers it's yet another controller configuration to build around (seems unclear whether or if it's possible that Sony will charge a licensing fee for PSVR2 support on PC titles; DualSense can work on PC games, but curiously by my count no PC games not also on PS5 have any DualSense feature support except, interestingly enough, Hi-Fi Rush), so even PC VR doesn't completely open all doors.

hey Sony, I’ll buy the games if you put them on pc. Hell I’d even use a special PlayStation vr launcher. Just Gimmi RE4 VR
