I need to replay it but I remember finding large stretches of it pretty boring. Maybe the amazing opening created unrealistic expectations.

Is there a Xenia Canary build that works well with this?
PS3 exclusive ;) But RPCS3 works fine with the OG GoW3 with upscaling.

I love the mechanics of GoW3 and the fluid gameplay but like the locations, etc. more in God of War 1.

God of war 1 2 3 are way better and funnier to play than 2018 and Ragnarok, Sony should Remake these games.

Sony is in love with remaster/remake shit but won't rereleases one of the great all time trilogies.
With the amount of stuff they would have to remove to meet their shitty modern standards I'm glad they haven't touched them tbh. Some things are best left alone.

Yeah... if it is to be made by some purple haired baby inc type of group the game wont pass the opening credits.

GOW needed a drastic change.

The older games were amazing, but the gameplay became stale and archaic.

If people hold dear to the old days, just buy a cheap old system and re-experience the 'good old days'.
Let the rest move on along with the times.

Nostalgia will only hold back progression.

And inject them with Sweet Baby juice?

Even though if I enjoyed the nordic ones (valhalla quite more than 8), I would take the greek ones any time, no discussion. CALLIOPEEEEE

Old guys on an old forum thinks old games are better.

Not to throw spite at anyone, I'm an old guy too.
But it would be a bit boring if God of War stayed the same for 15+ years.
The franchise would probably be a lot deader than it is right now as well.

It was never progression, it was a complete changing, they are totally different games in the same genre sharing the name for the sake of branding, and is fine that you and a lot people liked, but calling progression is stretching. It would be the same as saying that resident evil 7/8 is a progression of the third person shooter that resident evil 5/6 were.

And progression can be for the worse or for the better, and in my opinion is that it was for the worse in every single way since the franchise dont interest me anymore and after only two games apparently dosent interest a lot of people either since the second game was not too well received by a lot of fans of the first. Cant say anything about Ragnarok though since I didnt play and dont intend too after the reviews and opinions I saw.

But original GoW took a lot of progressively good games to finally present a dud, new modern GoW took only two apparently. Yes the game sold well because it road the success of the first one but is not by all means a universally liked game.

Modern is not always better, old is not always worst, simples as that.

It didnt need to stay the same.. it didnt need to completely change... and yes old games can be better, new ones can be better either ... all new movies are better ? All new music ? .. completely strawman argument my man

Progression of the franchise.

It became stale. A fresh wind can push the franchise forward, instead of cause a gradual decline.

Agreed. Original trilogy is fantastic. I finished GOW3 seven times. Never played the remaster at 60pfs though..

Yes I see people use Ascension as the example and turning point... but in 2013 sony alwso launched a little game called The Last of Us ... and I can see clearly Santa Monica watching their success and wanting to tap into that .. because I think GoW2018 has more influence from TLoU than that the original gow.

It was only one game that was not too well received ... maybe they could have launched another franchise and not called GoW .. and keeped the IP and original game for further use Instead of completely canned in search of the new trend, but it served them well and it sold well.. but as it seems it wont have too much legs.. maybe is time for another "progression"

It was excellent. think I beat it for the first time in 2022. I do love the new games though even if they have some bloat/filler content. One of these days I'm going to go back and platinum every game in the franchise.

This has been my feeling as well. The newer God of War is a downgrade of the older ones. Just too much padding, and I think that’s a fault of pushing light RPG mechanics. Seems like any of these open games that build around RPG mechanics and crafting are chock full of padding.

GOW3 is a fantastic game from start to finish. GOW is a straight talking game, where as the new ones are just blah blah blah. Must DL the GOW3 remake someday.

Gonna be working on Ascension plat soon. Although it might have been a fatigue for the old formula at 2013, in 2024 it actually feels tighter and more fresh than most recent games.

Ha I'm in the same boat as you. Ascension never clicked with me (maybe it was the change of combat mechanics). Need to go back and get the plat though.

It just proves my point that is not old guys leaving of nostalgia... thats the most stupid argument ever.

Just yesterday I showed my kids the original Exorcist movie.. they loved and shitted their paints more than any other modern horror movie they saw recently.

I kinda never played the God of War games and since this April 17 to May 2nd, I went through God Of War 1, 2, Chains of Olympus, GoW 3, Ghost of Sparta and started Ascension. Release order basically.

GoW 1 and 2 I found enjoyable enough, but with plenty pain points. Chains was like a refreshing, chill holiday romp.

GoW 3, even now, absolutely impressive with the scale, moving scenery, camera pans, diving from Olympus to the Underworld and back. Liked this one the best. It also calmed down with all the obtuse, unclear or poorly timed puzzles.

Ghost of Sparta was a bore. Extremely weak story and motivation. Long stretched of running left and right. Significantly limited moveset/magic IMO. No really interesting platforming sections. Some setpieces and bosses were cool. But compared to 1/2/CoO, it felt like a drag.

Ascension: visually, I can't believe they managed this on PS3. I can't say I'm a fan of the combat tweaks, especially the Parry that needs TWO buttons now. Also hooking into one enemy while slashing others seems redundant?. Nonetheless, I'm curious how it will evolve.

I liked 2018 a ton but I did zone out a lot as well. Because its bloated and filled with modern day tropes and daddy issues. And although it was immediately evident to me, the gore is completely gone in 2018.

God of War 3 is an old school God of War game which formula undeniably became stale. I skipped Ascension for example. But looking back, I probably rather replay God of War 3 than 2018. Its pacing is better, and there basically isn't any bloat. Its a 10 hour action adventure give or take. And very violent, Kratos is pissed off and wants nothing more than to tear the gods apart.

They kept using different people as director. They should bring back Jaffe for a new GOW.

They changed GOW because Ascension flopped and it was the right decision to take the series in a different direction. If they didnt do that they would be like Halo and Gears. Stale and boring franchises.

The problem is that they went too far with it especially in Ragnorak. GOW 2018 was already pushing it with a near 30 hour campaign, but ragnorak felt twice as long thanks to the atreus sections and the pacing in general.

I agree 100% on games needing to be shorter. I had a similar epiphany last year when spiderman 2 came out. I had spent years shitting on insomniac only for them to turn in a tightly paced 15 hour campaign that didnt overstay its welcome like GOW, TLOU2, FF16, and GoT did. I mopped up the side missions in another 5-10 hours and moved on. It's the perfect length for an open world game. GOW doesnt need to be 50 hours. HFW doesnt need to be 100 hours. Zelda didnt need to be 150 hours. Elden Ring didnt need to be 200 hours. Playing FF7 now and its way too long as well. I am legit thinking of skipping all side content and just doing story missions but i did with that with witcher 3 back in the day and it was a disaster.

If you liked GOW3 and Dead Space remake, id recommend other shorter games like Bayonetta 3, Callisto Protocol (10 hours each) Spiderman 2, and Gotham Knights (roughly 15-20 hours each). They are not as epic as GOW3 which is arguably top ten best campaigns ever, but they are pretty good by todays standards.
Agreed. I've found that roughly 15 hours is the absolute sweet spot for story length. I'd even accept less, honestly. As long as it's good.

Hands down best boss fights in any action game. Then you watch the boss fights on GOW 2018 and it's a snorefest.

There's probably few people who havent watched GOW boss fights, but if you never saw them, check out this awesome crazy shit.

The scope of the old how was fantastic.... Big bosses, big story, loved the combat...

I still miss the old games :(

i remember putting the disc in with the speakers full blast and just being blown away by the intro like milhouse, you just knew you were in for something epic, they were just fun games you could pick up and play. The new one was just so slow there were times it nearly put me to sleep, i know a lot of people love the story and the cinematic style of it but i thought it sucked
