Shadows of the Damned - |OT| of Demons and Girlfriends from Hell

Legion Hunter Difficulty. Boss
Flemming. From What I read, I have him on his last form, and I can't fucking kill him. Some guy on gamefaqs said that the player has about 7 seconds to charge the bomb on him and detonate it. Well, I have had about 3 seconds, that's it. I have tried to timing it carefully so the switch from the Dentist to Hot Boner is as smooth as possible, and so far I have not had any chance to shoot at the bomb. I have been able to charge it, but no opportunity whatsoever. If I miss even once on destroying his green shield, his yellow cracks won't even show up. What the fuck is this shit.
.

Maybe it's glitched, maybe not. But what I learned on Legion Hunter: The bosses have really really much HP. Try to shoot him with your SG. If the cracks don't show up or the sticky stuff dissapears, just shot him with your SG again.

Yea, I had some issues with the last boss as well. Died once but aside from that had no real issues with the game on Legion Hunter. Only issue I have is that the game forces you to replay the game on easy and normal. The game was good but not good enough to replay twice on easier settings. WTF is that shit all about.

Really enjoying it. The talent involved is already evident. It needed another 2 months for tweaks/QA but the quality/creativity is there.

Somebody gives these guys more money and MORE TIME please.

Akira is in TOP form here, I mean fuck.

I had fun playing it 3 times. But it's hilarious how big the difficulty gap between Legion Hunter and Demon Hunter is. The game became soooo easy. And I agree with most people here, unlocks would have been great. I hope there will be a sequel.

Yes! I'm surprised at how close he comes to sounding like Tim Hecker at times. And there's an awesome track that sounds like a hip-hop seance that I can't seem to find on the soundtrack.

edit: oh this one, when the dubish voice sample comes in near the end!

Game Hasn't Clicked with me.. I thought I was gonna get blown away by it.. but so far it seems pretty standard fair..why does Suda 51 love poop so much?

also very linear, wish it had more to explore..
so far it seems to be:
go through here, is dark ? y/n
N, Kill demons with Johnson

Y, Shoot goat head or light fireworks kill gargoyles, deal with dark demons. repeat until done.

proceed through here, Demon pubes, wait until dark shoot connection,. walk some more
baby faces in gate, they need feedin strawberry or brains, go find them, swamped by multiple demons kill them until you can proceed, give baby food proceed.
run through darkness deal with demons, light fireworks or grab human hearts, ruuuuuun to goat head shoot it clear darkness, kill demons
big boss fight learn weak point kill boss, oh look hears Paula, wait.. she is dying again...next level repeat

(get up grades etc while playing).. I am not hating on the game I am really not, it just hasn't got me hooked, yet, so far I am in area 5-2 I think, how many chapters ?

Love Christopher though..he is like the merchant but more insane.
Love the Music, love the interplay between Johnson and Garcia.

please don't think I am trolling or hating, still cracking on with the game though when I get time to play. I am just not feeling it as much as I thought I would...

ohh here goes posting this anyway...

The gameplay is certainly sound and I did enjoy the music and the dialogue is funny at times. I just didn't think the characters or narrative was fleshed out enough to warrant a replay. I didn't even find the game too challenging on Legion Hunter aside from bosses (and even those were usually no deaths for me). Graphically, the game is alright but it's probably one of the weaker looking UE3 games and overall polish is lacking with a ton of tearing, texture pop in, and level transitions. I also had a couple hard locks. Some unlocks would could have made the experience better for replays, I agree with you there.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Is this game anything like RE4? I just completed RE4 and I'm kinda wanting action-y (and probably over-the-top) horror-ish action games.

Its like RE 4.5 in terms of the mechanics. Really good, but short on depth IMO

Anyone has more feedback / help on
fleming
? Again, I'm on legion hunter difficulty. I hate that fight. It really ruins the experience for me. I am close to give up on it

Just keep at it, in the last sequence you just have to shoot him a bunch.
The first couple times he hunched over, I just shot him repeadtedly in the head. The cracks will show up.

Game plays like RE4 with moving and shooting. Sounds exactly like what you want right now.

RE4 is slow and scary. This is fast and fun. You'll be amazed at how much faster (and better) this feels than RE.

Even though a little voice inside me keeps telling me it might not be a good idea, I have the game and am going to give it a go.

rented it and I'm just about finished. Aside from some minor control issues, mostly personal preference, and the humor being really hit or miss, I really like it. Music in places sounds a lot like Homecoming but when it branches it turns to pure gold.

I'd place it behind NMH, Killer7, and Flower, Sun, and Rain

I would put it ahead of Contact and NMH2.

Still need to get the rest of his stuff at some point.

Everything I know about the game's theme and humor is stuff I know I generally dislike. But it still looks fun. And going by the intro, it does at least control very well.

I'd say he would be even more surprised to find how much more clunky and unpolished it is. Shadows of the Damned is a good enough game, but given the pedigree it turned out hugely disappointing. Basically I thought of the triumvirate only one brought the goods, and it was the guy in charge of the music, and then it turned out despite promoting as such the game wasn't even directed by Suda, but by some foreign guy I never heard of. Of course I had my apprehensions about the project when withing the first second of the reveal footage it was clear that this was a Unreal Engine game.

Resident Evil 4 was a landmark masterpiece that did many things and did them all so incredibly well as to put future imitators to shame, Shadows of the Damned on the other hand is a serviceable action game featuring rather bland level design and fitted with a very stylish veneer. Style or not at the end of the day a game has to stand tall by virtue of its mechanics, and Shadows of the Damned does so slightly clumsily.

Don't get me wrong, it is a good game and I am glad I bought it but let's call a spade a spade, eh.

Exactly the same problem, I swear he is impossible to kill. Fuck me I have been shooting this fucker for 50 minutes. Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I killed him, I have no idea why it took so long at least an hour.

First trailer said Executive Director.
I don't honestly think they ever said he was the Director.

Also, Suda wrote all (? i think.) of the dialogues, and that's usually what the fans like about his games.

Not disappointing if you buy it knowing that Grasshopper games are not perfect. i don't care about Mikami and i didn't care about Yamaoka, but in the end the OST is very good and i'm sure Mikami also did his part, so consider me fan of this Silent Hill guy at the very least.

I wanted a true "Suda 51 Director" game but i don't know if we will ever see one of those again.

Also i think bringing in Resident Evil 4 doesn't make justice to this game.
RE 4 is a masterpiece. it doesn't mean anything. SotD is still better than other boring TPS games. not better than RE 4, but those were different times.

That said, i'm on my second run, at Hard: it's very easy, but on your first run start the game at Easy or Normal, because "hard is easy" only if you already know the game and the weak-points.

Also, i cheated that "5 headshots in a row" achievement because it's too hard.

@Detox & BeautifulMemory

Are you guys using the machinegun (blue) on him rather than the shotgun (green)?

I haven't played on legion hunter yet, but I found that it is much easier to get cracks to appear when you use the shotgun. Also, I found that I was never able to get the bomb in place and detonated during the time he hunches over with cracks after destroying his green shield. The amount of time he hunches over for with cracks after a shield destruction is much shorter than the time he hunches over with cracks after you just blast him a bunch with shotgun.

I'm not sure how all this applies to legion hunter though. But it should stand to reason that it's better to use a shotgun than the machinegun since it does the most damage.

I am gonna try with shotty after I get home today. The problem is, I spent most of my gems on the handgun and dentist. The best I can do right now is have 3 upgrades on the attack power for shotty.

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but for now there's little info on the legion hunter difficulty. The only FAQ on gamefaqs only states that be prepared for a long fight. The message board seems to confirm that this boss is glitchy, and use shotty like you said.

Most of YouTube videos are done on normal or easy :(

I guess I didn't have those issues on Legion Hunter. The bosses did have an unreasonable amount of HP but I didn't die on any aside from once on the last boss. I did find him to be a bit glitchy in the 3rd part of the fight but it was so incredibly easy to dodge attacks it was no more than 20 minutes really. I had the pistol leveled up and just spammed head shots over and over. There were at least 2 times at the end where he hunched over and I couldn't get a bomb on him but the third time it worked.

That really sucks. imo first things to bump up are machinegun damage (5 gems) and shotty reload speed (5 gems). Then the damage of everything (10 gems). Then higher capacity for shotty (5 gems). That's 25 gems altogether... which should be doable on Legion, considering I got 80 on Lime and 58 on Demon.

Of course, this is a bit too late for you haha... unless you want to restart the chapter. It's not a very long one, thank god. There's 4 gems iirc just in the MOOR PU DEKCUF alone.

It might very well have said Executive Director on the first trailer, I didn't pay much attention to the fine print because I was too busy gnashing my teeth at the unmistakeable Unreal Engine tell tales and the fact that the game was looking to be a dark gritty shooter.

But you cannot blame me for thinking this was a tight collaboration between Mikami and Suda, who of course were going to be co-directors. In the promo videos it was just those two having fun, then a few days before release Gamasutra pulls the rug from under me by posting an interview with the real director behind the scenes.

The RE4 comparisons are somewhat valid though, it is clear this game borrows a lot from that game, but does not execute on them nearly on the same level as RE4. Frankly after RE4 and vanquish I expected more from a Mikami game but I think his role in this endeavor was likely blown up by marketing. Of course there is also the issue of inexperience in the Grasshopper team, the jank that Unreal Engine, or Ghonorrheal Engine as I lovingly call it, brings to the table and the fact that the RE4 team were likely better funded as well.

Aww man, wtf. This game has been absolutely flawless for me for 9 hours, and now the last two times I talked to Christopher, it auto-skipped his first dialogue :(

The last two times, and I'm on the last Chapter, I didn't get to hear what he says. And I love what he says!

Same thing happened to me. It seems as though he only says one of two things, so if you just press X on him 1-2 times, you'll catch what you missed.

This game is such a mess technicaly that it kills the experience for me. The texture pop-in is absolutely horrendous, fucking UE3 on consoles.... What a shitfest!

The Stinky Crow story book might have been the greatest thing ever put in a videogame though. It's a shame, I love the style and mechanicaly it's actualy decent but damn it feels like it's breaking at the seems.

Beat this yesterday. Just a super fun game that was funny and entertaining throughout.

The only gripe I have is with the last boss.
Paula wasn't hard, it was just annoying. Switching between fighting the one demon that would go in and out of the darkness and Paula herself was frustrating. Just when you had a bead on him, the fucker would jump into the darkness and go into dark form again. I never did get the rhythm of that fight down, I just stuck with it until I beat her.

I hope the game gets a sequel. I enjoyed my time with it and would love to see more of Garcia Fucking Hotspur!

LOL after a day's bitching, I beat it.

So I used a different strategy after all. Like it's suggested, I no longer tried to attack the boss through the green shell. I just pumped my bullets into him until he gave in.

Funny thing is, later
I did run into a glitch with Paula after all. She would not attack me and instead just flew around yelling. Thank god I found her easier than Fleming. I did not want to put up with BS again

so, is Legion Hunter mostly bearable? I don't want to put myself through anything ridiculously unfair. I might just do my Lemon run-through if that's the case.

I don't see what the problem is with linear levels in this case, nor since when has linear levels become such a dirty word in general. The linearity of the levels keep the game focused and drives the narrative and wouldn't be the main thing to ding the title on like many people and reviews do, considering there are more glaring design issues you can call out.

Poor player feedback on damage and proximity of enemies during the turret sequence. Lack of enemy variety, enemies always running directly at you (probably to make up for the fact that very few are distance enemies), not re-enforcing basic controls and mechanics that were briefly shown earlier in the game but do not come into much use till later, a boss build up that completely lets you down, wonky hit detection during the side-scroll section.

But the biggest problem of all? You can tell the team didn't come to grips with Unreal as there are many Kismet restart and engine level issues that weren't fixed.

As far as the repetition in gameplay... that seems to be a trademark in all Suda games.

John Harker

Beat it!

Took 10 hours.

I must say, the game definitely exceeded my expectations.
And knowing my love of Suda games, I had pretty high expectations.

One of the few games this year that I beat and simply didn't feel done with it.
I'd play a few more chapters, easily. I couldn't say that about most games I played this year.

I honestly have few complaints, great writing by Suda as usual, one of the best games to come out of Grasshopper, with some amazing music and art direction, top notch voice acting, speedy gameplay, fun characters, etc etc. Was even nice to finally get to do a puzzle or two here and there.

The only thing I feel like we missed out on was the story on how Johnson and Garcia met. Or most anything about Johnson, really.
At least through some of the stories in the game we learn bout Paula's history as the only female demon hunter

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Haha, and make sure you stay till the end of the credits. If you skipped it - best beat it again! Worth it.

edit: I'm still not sure why people are having so much difficulty with the Big Boner section. I think I died 3 times (Which I didn't mind, since the death's were funny) till I got down the pattern. You just had to keep the height level at the red spot in their face (their eye?) and just tap left or right and fire quickly. You didn't even need to aim since the enemies were all the same height.

4-1 - "The Big Boner" is the worst level in the world. How could they allow something so canned, lazy, and frustrating into this game?! And it's a total waste of one of the game's better environments too.

The last boss is tedious and the difficulties trophies don't stack. It's fairly easy outside of that.

I just started playing. Made it up to 3-1 on Demon difficulty. So far it's been pretty easy. Only 1 close call..and I haven't had to buy ammo or potions.

Question...I noticed one of my guns (the green one) turned into a shotgun. Do I get the old gun back? What if I upgrade weapons? Will I be wasting red gems on items I will eventually loose?

Don't bother buying any alcohol, you get more than enough during chapters.

Weapons only upgrade, and do not revert back to previous levels. All upgrades carry over to the upgraded weapon.
