Zelda Skyward Sword Spoiler Thread: Retelling the Legend without the black bars

Yeah, thinking about it, this had nothing on TPs end battles. This felt like the same fucking fight 5 times. At least TO, the final battle is 3 very distinct battles with distinct stategies, not just swordfight after swordfight. ie. You fight a massive beast Ganon in wolf mode, then fight him on horseback with Zelda while shooting light arrows (so awesome) then, hand to hand combat. This was pretty meh in comparison. Even WWs 2 end bosses were vastly superior IMO. The puppet, which had like 4 forms, each requiring different strategies, then the ganon swordfight, which in my mind is still the most epic and awesome final Zelda battle ever.

I have to applaud Ghirahim, though. He took 3 fatal blows to the chest and was still able to put up a fight. Demise died after one. (Granted, it was boosted with freaking thunder, but still.)

It was lightning! Freaking thunder is sound!!1111

Yeah Ghirahim can certainly take a hit. I loved his frustration over the fact that he couldn't ever beat Link. This game really makes me hope that Ghirahim appears in the WiiU Smash Bros. game.

Thanks for the info, friend!

I honestly would love to see a 10 of your scale. But this is Nintendo here we are talking about unfortunately.

Nevertheless the "pure" and "innocence" charm of the romance between Link and Zelda certainly has its own distinctive allure and charm. Certainly refreshing when compared to, say, the romance of modern Bioware games.

Now that I think about it, Demise's VA being OoT's Ganondorf's VA certainly isn't coincidence in this case. Since Ganondorf is a reincarnation of Demise's hate for the Gods and Ganondorf's first appears in Ocarina of Time, you do the math.

I'm pretty happy Groose didn't end up being the start of the Gerudo cause he was jealous over a crush. The Lord of Evil and one of the greatest villains of all time started out cause some bully suffers unrequited love and decides to take over the world? That would have been awful.

I don't know if I'm stretching too much after seeing the actual image, but did anybody else think of this image when the doors opened in the present?

Just finished, Wow. The whole time I was calling Groose Gannondorf throughout the game.

Right at the end when Link lays the Master Sword to rest and Zelda shrieks, I thought Groose had finally awoken (but it was just Impa saying she's staying).

Was anyone else unhappy that they didn't address why Fi looks like the Great Fairy?
Why did they leave the Triforce out in the open like that?

I really wish the story had been about the Master Sword instead of another search for the Triforce.

I like the story but as an origin tale I though it was kind of weak. Still the characters made up for it and the story did keep you invested all the way through.

Ah yes. Took about 40 hours, but I beat the game a few minutes ago. A few side quest left to do, although I tried to get a lot of them out of the way first.

If I'm ranking Zelda titles, this is how they fall right now: Link's Awakening, Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, A Link to the Past, Ocarina, Oracle of Seasons, Skyward Sword, Four Swords (GCN), Minish Cap, Oracle of Ages, Adventure of Link, Legend of Zelda, Phantom Hourglass. Not ranking Spirit Tracks because I've barely played it.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game, even if I ranked it pretty middle of the road in the series. There were some good steps in the right direction for the series and I felt the greatest flaws with the game might be the system itself limiting the developer's intent. But who knows.

So, likes and dislikes.

Likes:
+ Characters in the game. Even minor characters had great expressions and personalities. Zelda and Link actually felt alive. This is probably my favorite part of the game.

+ Storytelling, especially Link having actual emotions and a personality, the best I've seen in Zelda, even if the overall story was not the best.

+Changes to the item system. Upgrading, infusing potions, all great additions in my opinion. I enjoyed being able to select what you had in your adventure pouch too. They could even go further next time with upgrading armor and/or your tunic.

+ Music. Great, even amazing music. Remixes of old themes, but not too overused. The title music, flying music, all great. The dynamic shifting wonderful as always.

+ Sidequest. Even if I didn't find the world of Skyward Sword to be that great, the sidequest for the characters were very quality (although not quite Majora's level).

+ Eastereggs / Past references. Like most Zelda titles now, there are many shoutouts to previous entries into the series, and hidden gems that have been mentioned in this thread.

Neutral:

+/- Art direction. For the most part, I thought the game was pleasant to look at, bright worlds, lots of color and sometimes interesting. However sometimes they overuse of impressionist effect would just make things ugly, especially up close.

+/- The items. I loved the inclusion of some new items (Beetle), and some older items that were brought back with changes (Bombs). But a few of the items had very limited use and you rarely thought about. Even the shield felt unnecessary the majority of the time.

+/- Fi. I appreciated being able to see enemy strategy, and how many I've defeated. It was even nice to be able ask for a hint the few times I was stuck. But overall, she just ruined the pacing with hand holding, or obvious statements that you were required to listen to, but maybe should have been optional.

Negative:

- The world. Back to the style Ocarina started, Skyloft is really just a hub world for the three areas below. And unlike sailing in Wind Waker (which I loved world-wise because it left natural and connected), flying around an empty sky with a few rocks and not much of interest was almost sad.

On top of this, some dungeons and areas below just felt dead. Like the pirate ship, it felt like they had forgotten to finish development on it, being so empty. Unlike Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, it really felt like 'a game level' instead of 'a world' you were suppose to explore.

The transition between Skyloft to Flying didn't help, as it continued to feel disconnected. Skyloft took hub world to a whole new level. And of course the day / night cycle didn't help the disconnected feeling I had. The ending made the world feel more alive than it had the entire game.

- The controls. There were very few instances in the game where I felt, 'wow, I'm glad I have motion controls to pull this off'. The few instances where that occurred were in shooting the bow and a few of the sword puzzles. For the most part though, I found the controls to be more of a hindrance than helpful.

The sword fights in the game were repetitive, even to the point of boring (as was fighting Demise over and over). Motion controls, like in many Wii games, felt like they were just tacked on for things like flying and swimming, when stick control could have been optional and provided a more accurate way to handle things.

- Camera targeting, jumping. Like most 3D Zeldas, the camera provides it fare share of challenges at times, but mostly with the targeting system. When trying to align the camera, with enemies around, it can prove more difficult than the fight itself. The auto-jump does little in the way of helping the player that may slightly misaligned a jump because of the camera as well, or just because the jumping is incredibly straight and stiff.

Silly speculation, please pass over if you're not into that sort of thing:

Wouldn't it be cool if Demise were who they were worshipping/trying to call forth at the Stone Tower in Majora's Mask, with Majora being a sort of Ghirahim-type character, associated with the mask instead of a sword? Maybe Ikana had been at war with Hylia, and struggled in vain against the Hylians and their Triforce of the Gods. Desperate, they create a profane, depraved and blasphemous place, with the express goal of raising a demon with enough power to fight for them against the Hylians and their goddess-queen.

They succeed a little too well. They call forth Demise, who has no intention of fighting for the Ikana, and instead set his goals at scorching the earth and enslaving the planet, starting with the home base. Ikana's population is eradicated, the first alert the rest of the world has of the new existential crisis. The war against Demise and his forces begins, tearing the world apart in divine lightning and demonic fire. Somehow, Majora gets cast aside, reduced to mask form until the next unlucky soul comes upon it (possibly Skull Kid tens of thousands of years later), though retaining its demonic potency. (End of MM speculation).

I guess that's just how sword spirits look, e.g. Ghirahim.

Yeah that makes the most sense. I don't know I felt like they handled Fi kind of poorly in general. I liked her, despite how scary looking she when she sings, but I never felt like they built up the relationship with Link all that much which kind of hurt the ending to me. I would have made the creation of the master sword a bigger deal. I would have had Fi slowly gain a personality over the course of the game and at the end be forced to complete the sword herself for Link's sake and thus erasing her personality. She would live on without her memories and personality as the great fairy we see later on or something.

Still this was the Zelda and Link show so I can see how they wouldn't to overshadow that. Trying to repeat Link and Midna probably wouldn't have worked anyway.

So I think I've read through all the easter eggs/references to past games and I don't think anybody has mentioned how in your first conversation with Zelda you hear Navi's "Hey!!" soundbyte followed by Zelda's dialogue in which the first word is "Listen,".

Fuck the tadtones and anything to do with them. The worst padding of the game.

This and going back to the first dungeon are the only parts that really bother me. Luckily both can be finished in about ten minutes or less. Really though I just wish every area was like Lanayru. Every time you go to the desert there's a new section to explore so I don't see why they couldn't do the same for Faron and Eldin. Saying that though I did enjoy the Eldin stealth section.

Was about to bitch about people writing spoilers unashamedly, but now I realized I accidentally stumbled into the spoiler thread and not the OT.

This is the second time this happened. I wish the word "SPOILER" would be capitalized so it's easier for the eye to catch in fast forum scrolling :C

You should keep track of the OT in your subscribed threads.

My only issue with the tadtones is that there were just too many and having to "unlock" dowsing for them was stupid.

I liked the idea of swimming through a flooded Faron, but collecting fish and managing oxygen was boring.

At least I knew ahead of time that they attract to you if you spin near them, otherwise it would have been incredibly frustrating.

I had to go to the first dungeon a third time because I realised I missed a Goddess Cube in there and that time I didn't have the benefit of being warped back to the beginning once I reached the end.

I don't ;)

Just kidding, he's not bad. Just not great.

Nah it's cool. He's not going to be for everyone definitely. I always liked his personality but it wasn't until I found out why he was doing what he was doing that his character came together for me. Obviously they were going for something different with this games villain when compared to past Zelda titles but that another reason why I liked him.

I just liked that Ghirahim was not a "fake" main villain. He states quite early that he's working to revive his master, and that he'll pull out all stops to do so. So then when we got to the end, and we see LAUGHING while being torn apart by his master, it all felt appropriate. It wasn't like we were fooled into building up Ghirahim as the leader, when in reality he was a servant. It makes for a good rival character, which he played well.

I don't mind Ghirahim as a character
Fights.. not so much. Repetitive and annoying at first.
. He serves his role well until the end. A bit of a back story on him would have been interesting.

I think it's hard to really provide back story on a Sword. Though I dunno... I guess somehow the sword had to become a person with legs and other working body parts. Just sounds like more trouble than it's worth for Nintendo to try and explain all that.
