Zelda Skyward Sword Spoiler Thread: Retelling the Legend without the black bars

Gonna read some of the longer posts now. Finally beat the game, the last fight was just amazing.

Though, I couldn't stop thinking about how Groose had so many similarities to Gannondorf. Red hair, hate towards Link (at first), tall..and even the "little cape". Maybe just a "tease" more than anything. Just like how Fledge looked similar to Tingle and wanted to be "like Link".

That's because Groose is most likely an ancestor of the Gerudos. He's got red hair and yellow eyes. Don't forget that in OoT the Gerudo's are not evil. They are thieves, but they aren't evil. They were against Ganondorf too. Looks like the Gerudos are evolved from Hylians.

Hmm... forgot about that.!

Do you all think there are a lot of gamers playing SS who are new to the series or something? I was just browsing the OP and I'm surprised at the number of people who don't seem to have "zelda logic" or even realize stuff like the multiple ways to fight certain enemies and bosses or stuff like how the slingshot can stun enemies. And with all the handholding in this game you'd have thought it would all be pretty clear. Maybe I'm just too familiar with zelda style gameplay.

To be fair in past 3D games the majority of your items became useless after a tiny bit and rarely were many of the enemies challenging to require using different items. MM is one of the few Zelda titles I can think of that allows you to defeat bosses and enemies with a lot of different strategies.

Nintendo needs to keep two things moving forward:

1. Orchestrated music. It really made a difference. Also, it was tastefully done. It wasn't overly bombastic or unnecessary, all of the compositions felt new, yet nostalgic at the same time. Nice use of folk instruments as well.

2. Link's athleticism. This has to return in some form. All the dashing, wall climbing, and overall speediness of link's actions made this a fresh game, and helped the pace a lot. It made otherwise mundane activities into fun ones. It doesn't need to be the same exact system, but they really need to find a way to incorporate it in to future titles.

I remember using lots of weapons in WW to mess with the bad guys and to steal their stuff. I remember some weapons were more efficient than others. In SS I've read a number of people who didn't realize bombs could blow up those jelly guys or that the shield bash creates openings for you to attack and things like that. I'm not making fun of people I'm just wondering if the series has created so much of its own rules and procedures that seem foreign to people who aren't used to it.

For example to fight the Imprisoned the game clearly shows you the steam shoots which can shoot you up so that you can jump down on his head. The game also shows you the other route of attacking his toes. It seems most people went straight for his toes. I wonder if people didn't or don't explore those other possibilities because its not clear or because lots of modern games only present one method of beating enemies or one way forward etc.

3. Sword controls.

While I agree with you that the sword controls were great, I'm also going to accept that those were the "console specific gimmick" this time around. Who knows, maybe Wii U will use it, maybe it won't. But since it relies on the outside technology, I'm not gonna say they need to keep it in all future games. The other two are not console or tech reliant, so they MUST keep them going forward.

This is something neat and I completely found it on accident. I dunno what purpose this servers other than an overload of cuteness. If you go into Skyloft and go to the Godess Statue. (I turned back on the game to check out something). So I went inside and noticed a Hook Shot target I never noticed before. So I went up there and on the other side was a field of bright pink flowers. Well if you go down there and run around you suddenly get bombarded by Remlits that are hiding inside the field of flowers.

Wow! Great game, best thing to come from Nintendo in a long long while - this has surpassed SMG for me. SS is a massive step up from TP. A few things that I'm sure have been covered, but I must get off my chest!

- Music was phenomenal. Orchestrated needs to stay. And I find myself whistling the tunes throughout the day. Eldin Volcano especially! Loved it

- Lanayru desert was so good. Loved the Timeshift stones bringing colour back into the world. Really helped make the game shine.

- Character development was great. From the start you could tell Link was gonna step up progressively. Impa abusing you at the end of the Earth Temple, and then the confrontation at the Gate of Time was fantastically done.

- Ghirahim is a fresh villain (that may annoy some people). The character develops well. I think what a lot of people are missing is that a villain doesn't have to be an extremely evil and ruthless person to still be a villain. He was a likable antagonist, and set up well for Demise. Probably one of the best character designs to come from Nintendo in a while, right there next to...

- Groose. Absolutely hated him at the start and the love triangle they set up, and even though it was obvious he was gonna have a change of heart, it was still done really well. Can't remember who said it in the thread, but come on guys. Ganondorf, the King of Evil himself being born from a stupid crush? Dumb, and you know it! Glad it didn't turn out that way.

- Dungeon 5 (Sandship) was a terrible, terrible dungeon. It was empty and lifeless. Boss fight was fun but the design was silly. The duel was great as well, but apart from that it was kind of boring. And the hand-holding was particularly bad here as well. Took what little fun was there and crushed it :/

- Dungeon 4 (Cistern) was awesome! Definite high point, and the boss here was fantastic as well (probably the best in the game). Dungeon 6 (Fire Sanctuary) was great too, as was the Triforce Dungeon (Skytop?).

- Flooded Faron woods was terrible. And the Tadtone song is stupid as well. Probably the worst piece in the game.

- Groose has the best theme in the game confirmed?

- Demise was a bit too easy, I feel I could go back and finish it really quickly if I needed too. He should have had a third or even fourth form. Not as challenging as past final bosses (Ganon from WW?)

- Motion controls were touch and go. I feel like they should have been much more consistent than what they were. Mainly had to do with centering the screen a lot. But using the shield was awesome once you mastered it.

- Enemies weren't varied enough, and were too easy! Hopefully Hero Mode fixes the latter.

- Stamina bar was a nice addition, but it should have been improvable. I know it was implemented into most puzzles, but at the end game it became a little frustrating. Links athleticism must stay though!

I feel Zelda satisfied now! Looking forward to where the series goes next.

Fi was such a disappointment to me. They hardly used her as a character. She literally was just an assistant.

Her lack of personality could've been so charming. So many wasted opportunities where she could've given an inappropriate deadpan and statistical response. I cracked up the one time she told me in the Sand Sea "there is 0% probability that this room has anything, so given the overwhelming data I would advice to move on" or something along those lines. More stuff like that instead of redundant administrative drivel would've made a world of difference.

I found her ending rather emotional, but it could've been much more poignant and powerful if she had actually been developed at all.

Ghirahim, however, was fucking fierce. His whole arch was never fully fleshed out, but damn his catty remarks were amazing. I almost stood up clapping when he commented on Groose's hair. Spill the tea, gurl!

I say keep the upgrade system and potion infusion. But expend on it, MORE upgrades!

God yes.

Remember Chateau Romani from Majora's Mask? It gave you infinite magic for 3 days. I wish there was an equivalent for the stamina meter.

Upgrade system definitely needs to stay and be expanded on. I'd like for the stamina meter to be upgradable with some areas only accessible if you have it upgraded. Also stuff like areas or treasures only reachable if you upgrade the length on the clawshot or something. Basically stuff to make the upgrades more consequential. I ended up upgrading the bow all the way and loved taking enemies down with its improved strength.

Stamina Potion + Infusion + Potion Medal = Run like hell for a heck of a long time.

If anything, Groose could've been the long lost decendant of Tetra. Same wierd do. Same attitude. Considering Tetra is part of the Royal bloodline, how Groose or his kin managed to score with Zelda is a secret to anyone...

This pretty much. I maxed the Beetle, Slingshot, Bow, Sacred Shield and the bags, but they were just nice bonuses. It would've been nice if some treasure required the improved beetle's greater stamina and speed, for example.

Potions were kinda useless too. I never even touched the potion infusion system. There should be some super hard bonus boss or area that actually gives you incentive to get a super potion (or maybe even a sidequest, like a character asking for an infused stamina potion instead of the regular one). Maybe potions actually become useful in Hero Mode, but they should be useful too in the normal mode.

You know what I really fucking miss? Link twirling his sword in his hand during combat when you're moving around and locked onto your enemy. Nintendo left it out and actually, to me, it takes away from some of his badassness. Maybe he hasn't learned to twirl yet because its a genesis story? haha.

Dude, its motion plus. They couldn't have added it!

Here's my idea on the whole time travel thing: It isn't predetermined.

Remember in the ending when the camera focuses on the old woman's bracelet? That's just there to tell the audience for those who didn't realize the old woman was Impa. The real important part was what happens after Zelda and Co. go to her: She vanishes. Sealing Demise away in the Master Sword clearly altered the past in someway that had cost her life. My own take is that she may have actually given birth to Ganondorf, considering the exposure she has with the Master Sword, guarding the Temple and all, it's quite possible Demise might had an influence on her.

And it's not implausable too. This won't be the first time Impa was influenced by an evil force (see Oracle games).

Just finished. I really loved how this game explains so much about the series. They technically weren't lying when they said Ganondorf wasn't in the game. It's just that Ganondorf/Ganon are the reincarnation of Demise. I was starting to wonder that when Ghirahim pulled out that sword similar to TP/Smash Bros Ganondorf's sword.

Speaking of Ghirahim, I was actually surprised he was a sword after all. While the Guilded Sword theory seemed reasonable, it seemed so farfetched at the same time, but who would have thunk it? I really liked how they pulled that off.

I don't know why I never thought the old lady was Impa until 5 seconds before they straight up said it.

I was also happy that for once it actually seemed like Link and Zelda had a thing going at the end rather than ending up in the blueballs/Link doesn't give a fuck way it normally does.

That happened to me too. Seemed like it was incredibly obvious the whole time, but never considered until after they explained it.

I saw her the first time, couldn't think of anything but those wise old people in ST.

I feel like it's more than she no longer had Zelda to protect, so there was no reason for her to be around forever and she could die in peace before the events of the game ever happened.

Fighting the second part of Demise was pretty exhilarating. The music kicked in and lightning all around, made me think shit just got real.

This is what the final battle with Ganondorf in TP should have been. Definitely on par with Wind Waker's final boss fight. Still not the highs of OoT though, but then nothing probably ever will be.

My take as well.

You had a really good review of the game on your site, ShockingAlberto. The biggest criticism I can level against the game is the sheer amount of padding. A 30 hour game with less of it would've been better than a 40 hour game with it.

Did anyone else notice that the Boboklins' horns during the fight with all the Boboklins that Ghirahim summoned was the same song the flute played in Link to the Past?

I agree with this assessment.

And also... good God that is a pretty game. The fight against GaDemise looked incredible.

Seriously?!? I can sort of hear it, but no idea if it is intentional.

Who elese got shivers?

Nintendo sure weren't kidding when they said you could be in a dungeon without realising it. It happened on multiple occasions. Although I expected the pirate ship, it was still great the way it was handled.

Nothing suprised me like Yeti Mansion in TP though. I remember getting the first key and things WTF??? I'd probably have thought the same for SS on various occasions if Nintendo didn't mention it.

Its 5 AM, just finished the game, need to sleep.

That was pure awesomeness, Demise is fucking badass. I saw the 'Ganon' in him right at first sight (Shin-Akuma too! XD), so this was no surprise when he said his hatred would follow Link for generations.

Its good to finally know the roots of all these marvelous stories. Good night GAF.

Also did anyone else think this was the least weird Zelda game (consoles)? Even TP had some haunting music and weird cutscenes. Wind Waker with it's creepy zombies that had an awful screech. And we all know the situation with OOT and MM.

Not saying it's a bad thing but it was a little strange playing a Zelda game that didn't have anything disturbing in it.

I'm having so much fun with this game. Like 20hours in and still haven't beaten the 3rd temple lol (yesterday was more of a side-quest day. Playing around with stuff, coming out at night in different areas to see that's different).

This game just has the prefect level of difficulty for the puzzles. Not easy ... not annoyingly hard ... there's a ton of them and there's always something interesting around every corner (like the stuff you need for upgrades. I don't really get why I haven't come across ANY of the things I need to upgrade the net though ... in fact, the only thing I have that I CAN upgrade if the shield. Wonder if I'm just not looking in the right places or if I'm just not supposed to find this stuff yet ...)

Only bad thing I have to say is that the beetle might be a lil hexy.

I found that too. And now you realise they are all dead.

Well technically this Link is the most skilled swordsman of the lot seeing as he went to knight school.

Giving Cawlin's note to the toilet hand results in creepiness in Groose's room at night.

Just finished it, loved the ending. I'll let it sink in for a while but this might very well be, in my opinion of course, the best Zelda I've played this far. I also liked that you saw Zelda's journey during the credits.
